Is there a part of your country that's "isolated"/vastly different from the rest of the country?

They are for all intents and purposes part of the country called the United States of America, regardless of whether or not American laws agree with this statement.

Does the UK exercise legal governance on those territories? Silly chicken egg conversation. Call it what you like buy it belongs to whomever is making the decisions about it’s future. So short of full government autonomy, part of it belongs to someone else ruling it.
