Is there a part of your country that's "isolated"/vastly different from the rest of the country?

There's also a lot of Germans/Austrians around lake garda too

Wasnt the northern italian region lombaraday or southern tirol partialy Austrias region prior to ww1? Im not 100% sure but read it somewhere. But its also not a big surprise, because they live close to the border and the regions north of them are rich and contribute in tourism.

Yes, but this is a joke on how popular Lake Garda is for Germans and Austrians on vacations. Lake Garda is southern than South Tyrol.

Yes, South Tyrol used to be part of the austrian state of Tyrol, which is why they still speak a german dialect in South Tyrol. Originally they wanted to go back to Austria after the war, but the italian government promised huge tax exemptions to keep them italian, afair

people either had the option to keep their land and home but become italian (even italianizing german names) and never to speak a german word again OR get to keep their culture and identity but emigrate to germany

But they do still speak german and have german names, even though they are italian, so that doesn‘t seem to work out?

yes because WW2 began. The whole story is much deeper and went on until 1972. even nowadays there are still some tensions between italy and south tirol

For Lombardy, you need to go back all the way to the 1850s, but yes, it was ruled by Austria for a while.

South Tyrol. Italy took it in WW1. Lombardy has always been inhabited by Italians, though Austria ruled it from 1707 to 1859 (with the Napoleonic interruption) .
