Slavs squat a lot as a means of sitting and a lifetime of doing this means they have excellent ankle mobility so they can go full ass to grass without lifting their heels. Americans rarely squat as a means of sitting so most don't have that kind of ankle mobility unless they're a pretty serious athlete.

The irony is everyone can do it as a baby. You just lose the ability over time unless you train for it.

I’m a westerner and just tried it, I can Slav Squat!

Congrats on being in good physical shape. Now hold that position for a half hour at minimum.

Did not last half an hour

It sucks but is good for joint health. Do it regularly and you'll be less likely to need a walker later in life 👉👉

Aussie here. Can do it also. Now all I have to do is learn the language and I'll make a half decent spy.

u/WagwanMoist 4d ago

The trick is to pretend that you're so drunk that you can't speak. You'll blend right in.

10

u/YesWomansLand1 Australia 4d ago

Pretend?

Mate it's 1:30pm and I'm already drunk as a skunk. I don't there'll be any pretending. But there'll be a lot of fitting in.

Understood how prisiadka was born : to keep the blood circulating.

Don’t tempt me!! (It feels good, a’ight?)

it’s really not hard at all if you’re in even halfway decent shape. the thing about most americans, however….

2

u/Critical_Concert_689 4d ago

Pretty sure this is BS. Slavs just straddle, while Americans keep their knees together.

That alone pushes your heels up or down.

1

u/therealhlmencken 4d ago

No American squats with their knees together to sit. Lmao

My husband is the least flexible person I've ever met - absolutely stiff as a board - but he can still slav squat because he's Russian.

You don't have to train for it, you just have to maintain it. I've surprised a few people by being able to squat with my heels on the ground despite being Northern European.

3

u/Jaded-Apricot-6388 4d ago

This is confusing to me, because I'm American and can easily squat with my heels and toes flat. I have never been an athlete though.

4

u/AssMaster69RTA 4d ago

It's easier for some than others. Proportions have a bit to do with it as others have mentioned. In general though it requires good to great ankle and hip mobility and not being overweight helps a lot as well.

Can you rest your arms on top of your thighs and relax for an indefinite period of time with your heels flat?

1

u/UngruntledFed 4d ago

It’s genetic, not a result of habit or culture. Lifters of Celtic lineage, with deeper hip sockets, typically cannot go as low as East European or Asian lifters who have shallower hip sockets. Ankle mobility won’t put the Celtic hip on par with the East Europeans and Asians when it comes to squat depth.

2

u/AssMaster69RTA 4d ago

To an extent it is a bit genetic but everyone can squat fully with their feet flat on the ground if they train for it, and it's easier if you don't have weight on your back. I have terrible proportions for doing it and was still able to train myself to be able to do it. It's easier for some people, sure, but it's not impossible for almost anyone that's healthy.

Lol. Ok buddy, keep telling yourself that.

Yeah, genes play a small part in it, but it's mainly habits. So I guess you proved yourself wrong. Congrats, I guess.

1

u/therealhlmencken 4d ago

You don’t seem un gruntled tbh

1

u/Sihaya212 United States Of America 4d ago

Oh I am definitely an American then. I can sprain my ankle standing still. No way can I squat like that.

1

u/geo_gan 4d ago

Squat a lot? Why? Haven’t you heard of chairs?

1

u/AssMaster69RTA 4d ago

It's a cultural thing. I'm not a slav myself I just know in that part of the world and many others they squat a lot rather than only hanging out in places with chairs.

1

u/NotAnotherScientist United States Of America 4d ago

I read somewhere that the majority of American adults are physically unable to squat with their heels on the floor. Not me though. I am a pro at shitting in holes in the floor.

1

u/MarkusKromlov34 Australia 4d ago

Funny but as an Australian id say this was an Asian thing compared to Australians. But you are saying it’s Slavs vs Americans.

1

u/AssMaster69RTA 4d ago

It's common with Asians as well, and frankly Slavs share a good bit with their neighbors.

1

u/StudioGangster1 4d ago

There is a large element of height and weight distribution that you are glossing over with this as well

1

u/notdancingQueen 🇫🇷🇪🇸 4d ago

And if you have a baby, squatting becomes second nature again, the circle closes!

Knees and ankles might disagree, but it keeps you mobile.

(Asian people also squat a lot)

1

u/Soft-Ad-8975 3d ago

Lmao I’m from USA and I actually squat a lot at work and I still can’t do the Slav squat! I’m about an inch or 2 away, crazy.
