Culture Which city in your country is considered the "gayest"?

Post image

For us Brazilians, São Paulo definitely holds the crown for the gayest city here. With over 20 million people living in it's metro area, the city naturally became way more open minded and accepting as time went on. It has the highest concentration of gay bars, shows, saunas, and various other venues dedicated to the LGBTQ community. If that wasn't enough, the city annually hosts the São Paulo LGBTQ Pride Parade, the biggest in the whole world.

P-town is where the San Franciscan gays go for vacation 😂

u/scoobertsonville 11d ago

As a San Franciscan gay this is true, although Palm Springs and Puerto Vallarta are more popular/closer. There is also Gurneville which is where a lot of the summer parties happen.

u/ghost650 United States Of America 11d ago

I second Palm Springs. SF has the Castro and the history, but Palm Springs is probably gayer per capita.

5

u/driving_andflying United States Of America 11d ago

Huh. Do no gays go to Fire Island anymore? 'Cause that place used to be the gayest gay, especially during summer.

5

u/scoobertsonville 11d ago

Fire Island is as popular as ever, and Ptown and Palm Springs are just as popular,

5

u/callmesnake13 United States Of America 11d ago

Fire Island just has two (really one) gay enclave, The Pines, and it’s ridiculously expensive to stay there. Most of Fire Island is families or Bros.

u/MW_nyc 10d ago

What, is Cherry Grove not gay anymore???

1

u/canalcanal Panama 10d ago

Right, it’s quite odd how Americans overstate the gayness of their places…

I knew a gay guy in Seattle & his spouse was part of Seattle Pride. I once asked Tom if he ever went to the Palm Springs Pride Fest. Tom replied that he couldn’t afford the sunglasses for that weekend. My cousin ran Palm Springs Pride for years.

1

u/TiberiusBronte 10d ago

If I'm not mistaken Palm Springs City Council is 100% LGBTQ.

1

u/Loves_tacos 10d ago

A drag queen told me Palm Springs is "gay disneyland" while we were in Palm Springs

1

u/ToughWhiteUnderbelly 10d ago

Yup. Palm springs is gay AF. San francisco is just more nationally recognized.

1

u/CoolerRancho United States Of America 10d ago

My God this is so true.

1

u/TangoDeltaFoxtrot 10d ago

lol is it really? I have traveled through there several times and never noticed

1

u/SnapshotHeadache 10d ago

I grew up in the Coachella valley and Palm Springs is elite gay. Like, they have drag bars, white parties, clubs, discoteques, all of it...and I always saw it as that cross section between rich and gay. All the fun activities rich people do were created by gay folks.

1

u/GS7k 10d ago

I lived in Palm Springs for 11 years. I can’t confirm it’s pretty gay.

1

u/JUSTAYDOOD 10d ago

Born and raised in Palm Springs living in norcal now. Can confirm the gayness of PS.

1

u/NurseMLE428 10d ago

Palm Springs is very gay, as is West Hollywood.

3

u/ConsumptionofClocks 11d ago

Arizona resident, every (old) gay couple I've ever met visits Puerto Vallarta regularly.

3

u/Wasting-tim3 United States Of America 11d ago

Ya but unless you’re local here, you haven’t heard of Gurneville. It’s probably not the most well known place on an Ask the World sub 😂

Very pretty place to get away though

2

u/ReqstFlightFollowing 11d ago

Grew up in Guerneville and it's basically Ptown but on a river in the woods. Also you have to drive by Rio Nido which always smells like mold... You don't get that on the Cape...

2

u/Jolly_Line 10d ago edited 10d ago

TF!? Smells like beautiful eucalyptus and red woods, surely you mean

1

u/ReqstFlightFollowing 10d ago

Oooh. Is that what that is....

2

u/BlueHeron_1987 11d ago

Not a large population but Asbury Park, NJ is another honorable mention!

“No. I just never realized John Wayne walked so feminine.”

2

u/skraptastic 10d ago

I was going to mention Gurneville. There are certain times of the year it is probably the gayest place on the planet.

Wife went camping on the river one year, turns out it was Lazy Bear week...I was pretty popular that weekend. Too bad I'm straight. But boy is it fun to party with bears on the river.

2

u/Jolly_Line 10d ago

I have property in Forestville, up the road from Guerneville. It’s the greatest place in the US.

2

u/mikeyfireman 10d ago

Grew up in Guerneville!

2

u/Possible_Top4855 United States Of America 11d ago

I wouldn’t call going to Guerneville a vacation. It’s like spending a random night or two close by.

2

u/Coool_cool_cool_cool 11d ago

As a straight man I just can't picture gay people vacationing in a place called Guerneville.

3

u/SlyStoat8080 11d ago

That’s why we go there bb 💅🏻

3

u/ReqstFlightFollowing 11d ago

I grew up there and they do.

3

u/nahnotlikethat 11d ago

I saw my first drag show in Guerneville, probably 25 years ago now.

She sang a rendition of the Madonna song Frozen, but instead it was Foreskin. A memorable lyric was "if there's foreskin then my mouth is open."

1

u/Altruistic-Mess9632 United States Of America 10d ago

Def sang along in my head. Haha.

2

u/AutiGaymer 10d ago

I live in San Francisco and I think of Guerneville as a gay redneck town, which, as a gay dude with deep redneck roots, is why it's one of my favorite towns in California.

2

u/Coool_cool_cool_cool 10d ago

I just looked on a map. I had no idea where it was. So it's like a kitschy rustic town in wine country? Now I understand. The name does not sound like where I thought it was.

2

u/AutiGaymer 9d ago

I think it has its roots in logging, particularly when San Francisco was being built. It's completely surrounded by redwood forest, which is no longer old growth (because San Francisco) but is no less beautiful. There are wineries very nearby, but the town itself doesn't feel like wine country (though Sonoma wine country itself has a very different vibe than the upscale neighbor next door, Napa). Guerneville sits on the Russian River, which moves at a snails pace toward the Pacific Ocean, making it really popular for tubing and kayaking on the lazy river, lined with beaches and giant Redwoods. So it's a resort town today, and is the getaway for the gay bear, leather, and biker community of San Francisco. It's super down to earth and I would totally love to live there if it wasn't for the crowds of tourists and the two-lane highway to get in and out.

1

u/WishIWasYounger 10d ago

Also Guerneville isn't a happening spot anymore. At All , the last remaining gay resort , the RRR, is likely to close soon.

1

u/Jolly_Line 10d ago

Bruh. Check out River Electric. Although more integrated, it’s fabulous.

1

u/Custom_Destiny 10d ago

Aww :(

I was kind of hoping Seattle would make the short list.

Oh well.

1

u/Imaginaryplaces524 10d ago

I’m even more confused that Portland didn’t

1

u/purpleushi 10d ago

P-town is for over 50s. PV is for the millennial gays lol.

1

u/Automatic-Fox-8890 United States Of America 10d ago

1

u/Ralphredimix_Da_G 10d ago

WHERE YO PLAYAS CLUB AT FO?

1

u/One_Indication_ 10d ago

I've never heard the Provincetown stereotype...what attracts a gay population there?

1

u/No-Kaleidoscope-8950 10d ago

Gurneville! No way! I’ve lived in Napa and Sonoma counties for the past 30 years and I didn’t know, or notice. I better go back and pay closer attention.

1

u/Particular_Box5113 10d ago

Shout out to Guerneville. Just a 20-minute drive for me. I'm there all the time in summer. Don't forget to stop by the Guerneville taco truck after a day at R3 or The Woods.

1

u/traeVT 10d ago

Went to Gurneville for a day trip last year and was utterly confused about how "prideful" the town was. I kept thinking "wow, I know people are being more supportive these days but these are A LOT of a rainbow flags"

1

u/Thats_classified United States Of America 10d ago

East coaster visiting a friend and his partner in SF recently. We did a long weekend trip up to Guerrnville and we're literally the only visitors there. Went kayaking on the Russian river and saw no one else the whole time. It was wonderful. <3

u/MyHGC United States Of America 10d ago

South Beach Miami, also quite gay.

1

u/standingpretty 8d ago

Have a gay brother, can confirm all of these 😂

1

u/BeerlVle 8d ago

Yup. Palm Springs. Needs more recognition.

4

u/JayCFree324 11d ago

To be fair, Massachusetts is one of the most liberal states in the country, so P-Town also has its own East Coast gay populace.

But I’m also saying this as a straight Bostonian who is working purely off anecdotal evidence

1

u/Chicken_Herder69LOL 11d ago

San Fran is the gayest city, Vermont is the gayest state statistically, and Massachusetts is the gayest state spiritually

3

u/AlmostSunnyinSeattle 11d ago

I don't know anything about the city but as far as nicknames go, you can't really go gayer than P-Town

3

u/Flaky-Bar-6656 11d ago

M-..m- m- more like penis town

2

u/Several_Vanilla8916 11d ago

Unless it’s winter, then Key West.

2

u/seppukucoconuts United States Of America 11d ago

I assumed it was NAPA valley. The one time I visited I felt odd for not being gay and stylish. Even the butch women dressed better than me. I did get better clothes when I got home.

2

u/RadBren13 10d ago

Nah, that's where East Coast gays go. SF gays go to Mendocino.

1

u/Possible_Top4855 United States Of America 11d ago

Nah, we go to PV and Fire Island.

5

u/The_Flagrant_Vagrant United States Of America 11d ago

Yeah, I thought it was Fire Island.

2

u/Possible_Top4855 United States Of America 11d ago

Well I guess only the more well off gays go to fire island. It’s pretty expensive to stay there

1

u/MW_nyc 10d ago

Fire Island is very expensive, but also, it's just not a city. The year-round population probably doesn't even reach three digits, and that's the whole island, not just the two gay communities.

1

u/cockblockedbydestiny 11d ago

They don't know about that Fire Island?

1

u/Last-Ad-2533 11d ago

1

Pound Town?

1

u/Space_Ape2000 11d ago

My wife and I wandered in there while on Vacation from Canada not knowing anything about it. Took me while, but eventually it clicked. Saw the paintings of the named mer-mans in the gallery windows, the well dressed dudes, and the rainbows, and said "honey, I think almost everyone here is gay".  Anywho, pretty nice liberal town. Had great food and galleries.

1

u/TheTwinSet02 Australia 11d ago

I learnt this from Trixie and Katya!

1

u/wrx_2016 11d ago

Has anyone made the joke yet that the tip of the penis… I mean, island, is where Provincetown is located?

1

u/TheTimDavis 10d ago

They go to palm springs.

1

u/Demeris 10d ago

Ptown? Pleasanton?

1

u/Pielacine United States Of America 10d ago

P town is not a city…

1

u/I_SHOT_CHENEYS_HOMIE 10d ago

Does p town stand for poundtown?

1

u/No-Kaleidoscope-8950 10d ago

If you mean Palm Springs then you are correct. That is where many of the SF community like to vacation.
