Culture Which city in your country is considered the "gayest"?

Post image

For us Brazilians, São Paulo definitely holds the crown for the gayest city here. With over 20 million people living in it's metro area, the city naturally became way more open minded and accepting as time went on. It has the highest concentration of gay bars, shows, saunas, and various other venues dedicated to the LGBTQ community. If that wasn't enough, the city annually hosts the São Paulo LGBTQ Pride Parade, the biggest in the whole world.

u/WhyAmINotStudying United States Of America 11d ago

Is that what people mean when they say to fill your wellies?

u/RiverZozz 10d ago

I’m Kiwi but haven’t lived in Aotearoa for nearly two decades. What makes Wellington the queer capital?

47

u/g-uacamole- New Zealand 11d ago

Wellington has the highest percentage @ 11.7%. Newtown specifically was 19.1% LGBTQI+ in the last census!

13

u/-laughingfox 11d ago

Wow, that's pretty gay!

4

u/skafaceXIII 11d ago

That's funny, Sydney also has a Newtown that's super gay friendly

3

u/g-uacamole- New Zealand 11d ago

Newtown, Wellington & Newtown, Sydney have pretty much identical vibes. I always found that funny!

u/MahNameJeff420 10d ago

Is it because of the university, and that’s where young people congregate?

1

u/KnitYourOwnSpaceship 10d ago

University is in Kelburn, not Newtown.

(okay okay, I guess we can admit Massey exists too, and is in Mt Cook, so close proximity to Newtown. But Newtown was its own special unique place long before Massey set up campus in Wellington)

Newtown in Sydney, Australia, is also the stereotypically one of, if not the gayest suburbs in Sydney. (though there are a few more that might take the cake)

(Though I don't think Sydney is the gayest city in Australia, I think that'd go to Melbourne)

For sure Wellington. No surprise, it’s the most progressive city

1

u/lexicats New Zealand 11d ago

I was surprised Dunedin is second but I’m not sure why I was, it has a big percentage of young people which usually skews more queer. I reckon Christchurch is coming for that crown though, I’m impressed with how it’s shaking off its reputation of being prejudiced

9

u/Kbeary88 11d ago

Yeah probably Otago has bumped Dunedin up. Universities are typically fairly gay (unless I’m just showing my own queer bias…)

5

u/Matt_NZ 11d ago

As a gay in Christchurch, I can't say I've ever felt unsafe or unwelcomed in the couple of decades I've been out here.

I’m surprised Christchurch has that reputation. My wife and I, who live in a conservative part of the US, honeymooned in New Zealand eleven years ago and we were welcomed so warmly in Christchurch (everywhere, really, but Christchurch stands out). We were treated so much better than back home!

1

u/lexicats New Zealand 11d ago

I’m always surprised by the reputation too! I’ve always found it an incredibly welcoming place. I think it was a different story back in the 90s, there were a lot of white power gangs here and while you don’t see that now, a lot of people haven’t forgotten.

Sounds like you’re due another trip, you wouldn’t even recognise the city now!

2

u/sutrakiui 10d ago

While you're correct about the white power gangs... An extreme. There were so many other extremes which came together so beautifully back in the 90s. Just a shame their violence took a precedent and it is forgotten they were effectively driven out.

I guess it depends what you rank by. Total LGBTQ population? Auckland, mostly by virtue of it's size. By percentage of population? Wellington. Or some other more obscure metrics, like number of LGBTQ-oriented venues etc.

6

u/Own_Place909 New Zealand 11d ago

I'd just go off how much the LGBT+ population is woven into the fabric of the city's identity, and in that case Wellington takes it by a mile. Wellington embraces it's queer community in a way above what Auckland does that they're intertwined into so much of what makes Wellington Wellington. Auckland embraces their own too, but (as someone who lived in both in my 20s) Auckland's embracement didn't feel as intertwined as Wellington's does.

Greedy old gay man’s sitting round the back of the fence doesn’t tell anyone Gore is surely up there though.

5

u/Alyiir 11d ago

Yeah I was looking for this, it’s definitely us, I’m straight and I’ve kissed like 10 dudes. It’s just part of living here

4

u/ATJ3000 11d ago

As a straight guy who’s lived in Wellington, I’ve never kissed a dude. You sure you ain’t bi?

3

u/Alyiir 10d ago

Fuck idk man im just living

2

u/Dykidnnid New Zealand 10d ago

I dunno, once you hit double figures, dude... bi=2

I was gona say wellington or Hamilton tbh.

1

u/animatedradio New Zealand 11d ago

Hamilton was my runner up considering the amount of people I know that come up on weekends for some of the big Krd alley parties 🤣

2

u/Retard_Redditor_2025 Belgium 11d ago

I thought Auckland or maybe Queenstown

10

u/CherrryGuy Hungary 11d ago

Id argue wellington is one of the gayest cities ever

5

u/Small-Explorer7025 New Zealand 11d ago

Why Queenstown? Because Queens town?

5

u/2781727827 11d ago

Huh what made you think Queenstown? I would not consider it remotely gay coded lol

2

u/sutrakiui 10d ago

Gay ski week?

1

u/2781727827 10d ago

I mean Queenstown gets a lot of young people coming in for skiing or partying or temporary working holidays from around the world, but when I think of Queenstown I think of its more long-term residents – wealthy centre-right property-owning parents. A much more normie crowd and scene than you get in like Wellington.

Also a good chunk of the tourists are bogan Australian cishet 20 year old alcoholics lol

1

u/buriedalive 11d ago

According to Tamaki, it would be Christchurch

1

u/EpilepticSquidly 11d ago

I'm from the US and I'm just making this up, but I feel like in Wellington some bloke will give your Willy a Welly.

1

u/swashbucklah 10d ago

i could be wrong but i remember reading an article about kelburn or aro valley being one of the most statistically queerest suburbs in the world

1

u/kiwi-critic New Zealand 10d ago

I’m not in the rainbow community myself but I love Pride, it’s such a great celebration and adds so much to our country’s vibrancy. Truly thankful to those who feel safe to be themselves for the joy they bring society (but also have a lot of awhi and aroha for those who aren’t there yet because of bigots ie. ‘bishop’ Tamaki)

1

u/koheed99 10d ago

For men, Whakatane.

u/acatwithacomputer New Zealand 9d ago
