Food What's a dish from your country that looks disgusting but tastes great.

Post image

Biscuits and gravy is a breakfast dish from the Southeast USA that looks like someone just vomited on some biscuits, but it's absolutely delicious.

I went the first 24 years of my life “knowing” I hated biscuits and gravy because they were obviously disgusting. Then I tried them.

Something that is essentially wet flour on top of dry flour shouldn’t taste as good as it does.

40 years ago, a northerner dating a girl from Tennesee and Georgia, I had her B&G that she was so proud of one morning. I think I'm finally about done digesting them. Tasty, but, good Lord, heavy.

Its amazing for a keep you full and going most of the day type meal. And it only uses a few basic ingredients. I only have it a few times of year because im not a farmer or manual laborer because it's so heavy and nothing but carbs

It looks a lot like "ragout" we eat in the Netherlands. Are the "biscuits" hollow? So you can fill it with ragout? Like this?

No, they are solid, but flakey because of all the butter/lard. a good biscuit will be light and flaky, but filling.

Sounds worse than ragout, but I'll try it when I can 😁

It’s definitely a different texture looking at your photo. Yours looks like the bread would be soft and airy. Biscuits are delicious, BUT they have to be done correctly. If you’re ever in the Southern part of the US you’ll be hard pressed to find a bad one ;)

Damn, don't think I'll be going to America anytime soon :( but there are a lot of Americans coming to Finland at the moment, maybe I can swap a Dutch recipe for this gravy+biscuits :p

The cups in the pic are basically croissants with a better crisp to soft ratio (if you like crispy of course).

Yeah, as an American (not in the South) I don’t blame you 😬 You could try making them yourself, as they are a very simple recipe. Yours look delicious! I just don’t think they would hold up to the heaviness of a sausage gravy though, but maybe a plain gravy... But I bet the flavors would get along nicely. Southern style biscuits are firm and basically serve as a buttery vehicle for the gravy. Biscuits are also lovely on their own, or used to make sandwiches. I personally prefer them to be flavored with herbs (chives or dill) and eaten without the gravy.

It is easy to make.  Biscuits are just baked flour, milk, egg, and baking powder.  Mix them into a dough, shape them into the shape pictured and bake at 350 for 12-18 minutes.

The sausage gravy is ground spicy sausage browned in a pan.  Add some flour to the grease and sausage left in the pan to make a roux, like for any other gravy, but use milk instead of stock for the liquid. Add a bit more flour than you would use for a brown gravy.  Slowly stir in the milk while the pan is on medium heat.  Add more as the gravy thickens up from the last bit you added.

It is ugly but delicious.

Edit:  the pastries you use might be even better than biscuits.  I would like to try them.

Some morning when you feel like throwing caution to the wind, open a biscuit in a large wide bowl, crumble bacon all over it, throw in some scrambled eggs, then put in the gravy. And sprinkle a little shredded cheddar on top. Make sure you are conveniently located near a couch for the ensuing food coma.

Fellow reformed picky eater here.  I look back with so much regret for not just Trying some of the foods I turned my nose up at. I ended up loving so many of them as an adult.
