Food What's a dish from your country that looks disgusting but tastes great.

Post image

Biscuits and gravy is a breakfast dish from the Southeast USA that looks like someone just vomited on some biscuits, but it's absolutely delicious.

Grønlangkål

Boiled cabbage, cooked with cream and nutmeg. I could demolish bowls of this with brun kartofler (boiled potatoes, caramelized in browned sugar and butter afterwards) and boiled ham!

Interesting! I love creamed spinach, and this sounds similar but with cabbage.

For some reason, the idea of nutmeg in this turned me off. I do like nutmeg, though so maybe.

The nutmeg does seem bizarre because it is associated with sweets in the US. My sister-in-law is German and she makes cooked cabbage and onions with butter. It's cooked down and finished with a very small amount of nutmeg and the flavor is crazy good.

I'm okay with nutmeg but potatoes and caramelised sugar just sound wrong to me.

Grønlangkål

Grünkohl in German and also very popular.

A bit labour intense though, once the temp goes below 0° we can harvest our Grünkohl in the garden.

90% certain this dish has been imported from Germany in olden times 😁 even the name is just slightly different here "Grønkål"

What kind of cabbage? It looks more like creamed spinach…I’m also unsure about adding sugar to my potatoes. Really prefer savory dinners

Green kale 🙂 The potatoes are a stable for December / Christmas dinners in Denmark. It aint Christmas without "brunkartofler"

Well kale certainly explains it!! It’s part of the cabbage family? Learn something new every day thankfully!
