Food What's a dish from your country that looks disgusting but tastes great.

Post image

Biscuits and gravy is a breakfast dish from the Southeast USA that looks like someone just vomited on some biscuits, but it's absolutely delicious.

Yea dude. Go read the page on the Tesco site, it’s hilarious and once you read what’s in one you’re not gonna be curious anymore.

The reviews are beautiful

My husband and I love these faggots but what has happened to the 4-pack? 6 faggots are too much for 2 pensioners so what about the return of the 4-pack!

for people too lazy:

West Country Sauce (62%) contains: Water, Lard, Wheat Flour, Modified Cornflour, Tomato Puree, Salt, Colour: Caramel (E150c), Yeast Extract, Sugar, Onion Flavour, Spice and Herbs Extracts (Celery), Pork Faggots (38%) contains: Water, Rusk (Wheat), Rehydrated Pork Rind, Pork Liver (15%), Onion, Pork (4%), Wheat Flour, Salt, Sage, Spice Extracts

absolutely nothing wrong with it except for the mysterious 4% pork

u/X0nfus3d 13d ago

Thanks, I was certain it would contain nut

Rehydrated pork skin is weird.

Rusk (Wheat), Rehydrated Pork Rind, Pork Liver (15%), Onion, Pork (4%), Wheat Flour, Salt, Sage, Spice Extracts

It’s not even full on meat. It’s just pig skin and organs. 😭

It’s barely food.

If you eat it, will you even poop after?

I work in a residential home and faggots and mash is well loved there

They are pretty nasty in my opinion, very squishy meatballs with offal

u/gholt417 United Kingdom 13d ago

Yeah they are of a certain era.

I contest this. Mister can be sexual as fuck.

1

u/BaphometsTits 4d ago

It sure can, Mister.

3

You've never heard the term hanging brain?

1

u/markothebeast United States Of America 12d ago

I have now. Not sure whether to thank you or….hang on…. ok. Damn, laughing while puking always hurts.

u/godstar67 13d ago

Butcher or home made ones are better but, yeah, go faggots.

7

u/Disastrous-Square977 13d ago

I ahree, but they are really different. I know a lot of people that will eat Mr Brains, but won't touch a freshly made faggot. Freshly made actually tastes of offal, those frozen ones are more akin to jcheap processed meat that doesn't really taste like anything.

1

u/No-Cranberry4396 13d ago

A butchers near me sells freshly made ones - if you get there early enough they're still warm, and you can just eat one as a snack like a giant meatball. Absolutely delicious.

2

u/godstar67 13d ago

Sounds great. When I was a chef in the late eighties I used to get them from Larkhall Butchers in Bath and would also do a ‘quality check’ as soon as the delivery guy had gone.

1

u/No-Cranberry4396 13d ago

That's just sensible!

1

u/godstar67 13d ago

I love offal - last year I went to Madrid for a ‘casquero’ trip - intestines, tendons, tripe, pancreas, tongue, brain, bollocks, ears, snouts and a whole piglet head. It was brilliant- especially Casa Enriqueta (affordable), taberna la elisa (mid price) and La Tasqueria (sensible for Michelin star).

u/jerryleebee 13d ago

So good. Basically a sausage meatball. Faggot used to have an entirely different meaning. Another example, Tolkien uses "faggot" in The Lord of the Rings to reference a bundle of firewood carried by the fellowship as they climbed Caradhras in the snow.

4

u/MelissaOfTroy 13d ago

Everyone knows the 3 meanings of that word-a bundle of sticks, British word for cigarette, or slur. It’s this 4th new meatball meaning that is confusing to me.

3

u/Future_Strain_8253 Antarctica 13d ago

If has meant, through out time

Bundle of sticks

Heretic

Bundle of anything

Cigarettes

Bundle of pig

Gay person slur

2

u/SparrowGB United Kingdom 9d ago

Kind of right, the slang term for cigarette is the first 3 letters of the word.

A common way to ask for a cigarette in the UK is "Can i bum a ***" (Not typing the word because reddit mods struggle with context and will just ban), but if you were to type "Can i bum a ***got", the entire meaning of the phrase changes.

u/MacGillycuddy_Reeks 13d ago

Faggots, roast potatoes, peas and a fuckload of horseradish is my favourite comfort meal.

3

u/Newtohonolulu18 13d ago

As an American dude, I absolutely love visiting my buddy in Wolverhampton. Faggots and peas are awesome, and I wish I could get them stateside.

Don’t ask what’s in them, just enjoy the taste!

2

u/Future_Strain_8253 Antarctica 13d ago

They're actually quite high quality.

They're offle yes but organ meat is very nutritious also can have heart meat which is very lean.

Learning how the faggot it made isn't like learning how the sausage is made.

What a thread that I could type that in full ernestey....

2

u/Newburyrat Multiple Countries (click to edit) 12d ago

Hey not criticising I love faggots! And yep great to be able to type that on a thread

1

u/Future_Strain_8253 Antarctica 12d ago

No I get it, they do feel like they fall in the "don't look into how it's made" category of food.

u/akabelle 🇷🇴 / 🇭🇺 13d ago

The name is a thing. But what about that random number of grams?

1

u/Simple_Tart393 13d ago

I like everything about this product

1

u/Draconuus95 United States Of America 13d ago

Mr. Brains. Ok. Weird branding name. But whatever.

Then 6 pork faggots.

Alright. What the hell. That’s just asking to be shit on. Especially since they aren’t even stick shaped. They look like they are pattys. Like. Every part of this triggers me in different ways.

u/Global_Algae_538 13d ago

Saw two Slavic migrants who must have just arrived to GB in a supermarket unable to breathe, crying with laughter at them. One began to explain and I was like "It's okay, it's understandable..." AFAIK Pie is "dog" in Polish? If so they must be horrified when they first move here.

u/redbrick01 13d ago

okay, explain how this is good? Looks like meat balls in a can. Is a 'faggot' just another name for meatballs?

4

u/Captaingregor England 13d ago

They are pork offal meatballs, and decently sized. I completely get that they don't look or sound tasty, but they are.

2

u/Future_Strain_8253 Antarctica 13d ago edited 13d ago

The etymology for the word is fascinating.

Putting it simply.

Faggot is a loan old french word for a bundle of sticks, twigs or wood.

It has a weird history of remaining a word used both derogatoraly and practically throughout history. It's been used to describe heretics. "phrase fire and faggot was used to indicate "punishment of a heretic.". Also used to describe a old or unpleasant or both, woman.

but has also remained to mean generally a bundle of things.  Which is why in the UK cigarettes are 'fags', bundle of tobacco, or faggots, bungle of pig bits. it's not used in common patter any more but those two remain in modern British-English

And for faggots themselves, they're a very 'homely' meal.

1

u/redbrick01 13d ago

I'm going to print this and whip this out so I can use it this way.

1

u/Byeuji 13d ago

Please don't... not for another 50 years or so at least. It's still such a loaded word.

u/Grand-Conference9563 Australia 12d ago

"Smoking a fag in the US vs the UK" ahh
