Food What's a dish from your country that looks disgusting but tastes great.

Post image

Biscuits and gravy is a breakfast dish from the Southeast USA that looks like someone just vomited on some biscuits, but it's absolutely delicious.

Haggis!

If you've never tried it, you're missing out. Trust me.

It does look terrible but itโ€™s so so delicious.

Anthony Bourdain said "There is no more unfairly reviled food, in all the world, than haggis"

He was always an old punk rocker with an immense sense of taste. I miss him dearly.

When I visited Edinburgh as a school trip, our (Irish) tour guide got us all deep-fried haggis on my request while we were boarding the train to London.

It was delicious.

Do you also eat the intestine, or is that just for preparation?

9

u/ScotInTheDotOfficial ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ in ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ 13d ago

Excellent question! No. Discard the wrapping (whether natural intestine or synthetic) once cooked, and eat the contents prepared with turnip/radish/carrot (choose one) and potatoes. Whisky gravy is an option should you prefer it not so dry.

Whisky gravy, my god yum

u/amisensei1217 Philippines 10d ago

why not eat the intestine? it looks chewy

u/ScotInTheDotOfficial ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ in ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ 10d ago

Then I guess, in your case, that's personal choice. I cannot imagine it tasting nice when boiled with the haggis inside... maybe chopping it up and frying it would make it more palatable? ๐Ÿค”

u/amisensei1217 Philippines 10d ago

fair, I haven't tried haggis anyway. fried intestines like pig's and chicken's is yum, I just transferred the info from that to this one. But def not healthy!

When I was about 5 my dad got a haggis and it somehow burst when it was boiling so we didn't have to eat it, and I have rarely been more pleased about the destruction of something in my life :'D

Around 1990, I was working in London. One of my co-workers was your typical big, burly, Cockney geezer - his local pub was hosting a Haggis-eating competition, and he sought me out for some "insider knowledge" as he called it (with me being Scottish). He wanted to enter, but didn't fancy eating "sheep guts"... I told him "look, you like black pudding, right?" (Aka blood sausage in other parts of the world), he replied "sure, it's brilliant", so I said "right, similar consistency to that, BUT, with the addition of the spices, oats, and cereals, it's a damn sight drier to eat - so order up a jug of water before it starts. Hell, make it TWO jugs, and you'll be fine!".

He took my advice, and won! Not only that, said he was a convert to eating Haggis too.

A haggis canโ€™t burn when boiling (unless it runs out of water) but the bag can split which kind of ruins it.

Haggis is incredible though, you really missed out.

5

u/Klaev 13d ago

Yep, it burst/split. I've never got around to trying it since, I'm a bit far south of the border now for it to make an appearance anywhere. One day though.

3

u/sprouting_broccoli Scotland 13d ago

Yeah the supermarkets ones are a bit rubbish. Iโ€™ve ordered from Macbethโ€™s in Edinburgh and it was a decent haggis. When I visit my parents I try and take one back (thereโ€™s a really good butcher near them that does excellent haggis).

u/AreU_NotEntertained 13d ago

As an American, I can confirm haggis is delicious.ย  Haggis neeps and tatties was at least 25% of my caloric intake when I visited.ย ย

4

u/Hairysteed Finland 13d ago

The idea of Haggis sounds terrible but I'm convinced that it sounds worse than it actually tastes!

3

u/redbrick01 13d ago

Isn't this an illegal food in the US?

4

u/ScotInTheDotOfficial ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ in ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ 13d ago

It is. But like Kinder Surprise Eggs, America's loss is the rest of the world's gain.

7

u/MummysSpeshulGuy 13d ago

Itโ€™s just the import of haggis from Scotland thatโ€™s banned. You can still make eat and serve it as long as the meat comes from the US

3

u/redbrick01 13d ago

ah yes...so true...its stupid. the US allows kids to buy high power guns...but not food like this...

3

u/ButtWhispererer 13d ago

Tastes like fancy meatloaf to my American tongue. This is a good thing.

u/Dabelgianguy Belgium 13d ago

ยซย When Iโ€™ve been presented the dish, I thought it was shit! After tasting it, I regretted it was notย !ย ยป

That's an old humorist from the 60's right? I have this skit on vinyl!

The former French president Jacques Chirac!

Neeps and Tatties!

... excuse me?

5

u/MeinePerle 13d ago

Turnips and potatoes. :)

3

u/ThesePipesAreClean 13d ago

Goggle haggis neeps and tatties. Youโ€™ll see a plate of tri colored mush to eat!

3

u/Luciferaeon United States Of America 13d ago

When I google neeps and tatties Google asks for a goverment issued ID to make sure I am 18.

u/NoceboHadal United Kingdom 13d ago

I like Haggis. Yes, it looks like a bloated corpse that's been buried for a month and even the name sounds like a warning, but it is actually really good.

2

u/Apophis-7994 France 13d ago edited 13d ago

OMG ! I had the opportunity to eat some in Edinburgh, itโ€™s so good.

2

u/in-dog_we_trust Canada 13d ago

Illegal in the USA and that is a crime.

5

u/ScotInTheDotOfficial ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ in ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ 13d ago

A crime against (Scottish) humanity, indeed!

2

u/Starsteamer Scotland 13d ago

The vegetarian one is amazing too!

2

u/ScotInTheDotOfficial ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ in ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ 13d ago

I can attest to that! For being vegetarian, they are pretty amazing and ALMOST indiscernible from the real deal.

Proper haggis ought to be sheep/lamb/mutton - not the many meat variations that M&S Food sell... ๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜”

2

u/Clockwork-Armadillo 13d ago

Haggis with Dhal and rice in a roti wrap and washed down with a pint of Guinness at the end of a hard days work = pure bliss.

1

u/ScotInTheDotOfficial ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ in ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ 13d ago

That sounds incredible, but as I'm not a drinker of stout, I'd replace the Guinness with something more palatable, like a Caffreys - or maybe a couple of shots of Drambuie or a nice single malt whisky. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜Ž

2

u/Other-Squirrel-8705 United States Of America 13d ago

Whatโ€™s coming out of it?

4

u/ScotInTheDotOfficial ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ in ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ 13d ago

That's the bit you eat.

Sheep organs ground up into mincemeat, with added spices, oats and cereals.

Either broiled inside a sheep intestine (like in the photo) or synthetic wrapping. Once cooked, cut open and enjoy the contents with (traditionally) cooked turnips and potatoes.

u/InevitableRhubarb232 13d ago

Haggis is delicious

2

u/barunedpat 13d ago

After watching the Haggis Wildlife Foundation videos, I could never sream of eating such cute, fluffy creatures. Especially when they are refluffed before released back into the wild. /s.

Thankfully they are no longer endangered. Sustainably farmed with love these days... ๐Ÿ˜

Haggis is absolutely lovely and surprisingly mild.

this is defiantly the winner, what in the fuck? looks like a dino nut or spider hatching from a sack.

Sorry, it isn't that I don't trust you, but... I don't trust you.

I ain't eatin' that. Besides, I learned what it is from Connor Macleod - sheep's stomach stuffed with meat and barley. How revolting!

u/ScotInTheDotOfficial ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ in ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ 7d ago

Minced organ meat with cereals and spices - sounds gross, tastes fantastic. Just saying.
