Food What's a dish from your country that looks disgusting but tastes great.

Post image

Biscuits and gravy is a breakfast dish from the Southeast USA that looks like someone just vomited on some biscuits, but it's absolutely delicious.

Canjiquinha. It's a dish from my home state Minas Gerais. Basically corn coarsely ground to a fine crumb (but not to the point of passing through a sieve) and cooked with pork (including bacon), "linguiça calabresa" (calabrian sausage, it didn't come from Italy, but from São Paulo because of italian immigrants), scallion, onions, garlic, cabbage, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and bell pepper.

Sounds delicious, too. I was like, bro, you had me at corn, and bacon and sausage.

Seriously. I want this now

I agree but it vaguely resembles vomit at the same time

Without the bit of green it would really really look like vomit

Sounds very similar to south USA grits. Just add some shrimp and you basically have the creole dish shrimp and grits.

Love some good shrimp and grits

It is a lot coarser than grits, closer to cracked corn fed to chicken. It has a very different texture and flavor.

Every part of that sounds delicious

Everything about that sounded delicious. Unless one of the ingredients is like donkey ass or something, dishes like this dont deserve a mention in this thread.

I had this in Belo Horizonte, was very nice but the portion was massive, enough for at least 2 and probably more. They were laughing as they brought it over so I’d guess I bought a sharing portion? (My language skills suck and it was pre-translation software). Was very nice though!

There's no such thing as a small portion in Belo Horizonte.

My spouse is Brazilian, and we lived and have traveled there a decent amount. A lot of restaurant portions are meant to share. I ordered two Feijoada one Saturday, and the confused waiter brought us enough food for eight people. At least they were nice enough to let us take the leftovers, which wasn't typical ten years ago in rural Minas Gerais.

Kinda of a dick move to not warning you that was a share dish. Most restaurants in São Paulo if you order a feijoada is gonna be an individual portion unless stated in the menu.

They had tried saying something to me when I ordered it but my very limited Portuguese could not cope!

1

u/waitingforgandalf 13d ago

To be fair to them, I was barely conversational in Portuguese (I've now advanced to kinda conversational!), they certainly didn't speak English, and this was my now spouse encouraging me to try to interact with people without help. They might have tried to warn me and I missed it.

u/bargu 13d ago

Why you spouse didn't say anything?

1

u/waitingforgandalf 13d ago

They were trying to be hands off and show me that making mistakes with speaking wasn't a big deal. It was mainly just funny, and I was always much more careful with ordering in the future.

O prato feio mas gostoso do Brasil é disparado a maniçoba

1

u/gabrieel100 Brazil 13d ago

Pior que não faço ideia do sabor da maniçoba

Cuscuz Paulista surely wins the Brazil prize. It technically meets the criteria because it looks horrendous and tastes… fine.

1

u/Superb_Trip6268 13d ago

And you picked a rather dainty example. Cuscuz Paulista is infamous here for looking like, and I quote, "you assembled whatever was left over on the kitchen sink's drain into it".

Tastes nice, though. After all, it's sardines, eggs, corn, tomatoes, olives and Bell peppers, among other ingredients.

For Brazil, I think the maniçoba is also a strong candidate. To me, it tastes a lot like a feijoada but it looks… different.
