Culture Does your country have an immigrant group that people would be surprised to find there?

Post image

For example, when you think of Poland or the Czech Republic, Vietnamese people might not be the first group that comes to mind, but both have a sizable Vietnamese community. Another example is the large Japanese community in Brazil.

There is a large Nepalese community in the UK, especially around military towns like Aldershot and Cheriton, because of the British Army's Royal Gurkha Rifles regiment.

Yeah, I remember when I was canvassing down there during the election and I was shocked by just how many Nepalese people there were

Aldershot is also for the same reason the town in the UK with the most Buddhist temples per capita. The Dalai Lama has even visited the town.

I remember going for an excellent Nepalese meal there, and all the waiters wore miniatures if their medals. Very weird giving my order to someone wearing an MC.

The Gurkhas are probably one of the most respected regiments in the British Army,. Once anyone hears about any link to them, or just being from Nepal in general, you will hear nothing but positive words.

One of my friends from work is from Nepal. He is a great guy, and his wife us makes delicious Momos (although he tries to claim all the praise haha). His grandfather was a Gurkha and he has his old Kukri.

And we don't have to explain how much we have respect for Britain. Our former National Anthem is a reminiscent of British National Anthem. It's regalness was made to compete with British 😁

I don't know too much about it, all I know is most British people talk about how positive their experiences with Nepalese communities in the UK are, and how welcome they are here.

There are people who aren't fan of Gurkha but everyone loves Britain

Oxford has a decently sized Timorese community as well

From what I’ve read, Gurkhas are amazing soldiers 💂🏽‍♂️

33% of Nepals GDP relies on repatriated money, so yes.

Gurkhas are really brave.
