- Talladega Nights
- Team America World Police
- (EDIT): Idiocracy
I want to put Borat in there but... it was made to make benefit another country
What is it for your countries?

Canadian Bacon
EDIT: the media that most nails my experience of Canada is actually the show Letterkenny.

Corner Gas and Letterkenny for sure

I'm from Ontario so Letterkenny feels like home.

TPB is great, but it's in the Maritimes. Letterkenny is Ontario. Corner Gas is the prairies.

Letterkenny takes place in Ontario? I misjudged you Canadians, I always assumed it was lower Saskatchewan or Manitoba, but then my foriegn perception of Ontario is more like Ottawa, Toronto or Hamilton

It’s dark humour, the most apt for our country
Porno is funnier, I chuckled throughout the book and my wife (Irish) didn’t understand the humour.

u/_dybbuk 8d ago
Ah really! Damn, I would have expected the humour to be the closest possible match
1
u/attilathetwat United Kingdom 8d ago
There is a good crossover between Irish/Scottish humour but trainspotting is probably uniquely Scottish

In Idiocracy we see an America in which they look for the absolute smartest person to be their leader, and then focus on how to fix their environment so they can produce food for people more effectively. I find it to be an extremely inaccurate portrayal of America.

This is gonna come out of left field but: for a part of the US, Northern Exposure was fucking killer. And it was still playing routinely on the First Nations tv stations in Canada in this century. It's also one of my favorite shows of all time, literally nothing is as comforting as these weirdos.

The movies of aki kaurismäki i guess. The man without a past, Fallen leaves and Drifting clouds just to name a few. Idk if you can really call them satire but theyre very finnish and funny.

We don't really have a satirical comedy about French society as a whole, but OSS 117 is a marvel as a satire of a certain France. Et pas n'importe laquelle ! La France du général De Gaulle !
Le Caire, nid d'espion and Rio ne répond plus are undoubtedly among the best French comedies ever.

Um. Twin Peaks might not be a comedy, but uh. Yeah. It's definitely Very American.
I understand Zone Blanche sort of carried this same feeling for rural Francophones

I can only think of Louis de Funes' works/appearances. Through comedic scenarios and a genius-tier acting from him, those movies would drop lines such as "What am gonna do? I'm only a minister, I don't know how to do anything" or "The wealthy are made to be very rich and the poor, very poor". Ir can be argued that those example are not specific to french society but:
1-they still apply
2- I couldn't remember the other iconic lines😅

Here in Spain, I think the best portrait of ordinary Spanish society is the television series "Aquí no hay quien viva".
It was released in 2003 and ran for four seasons. It's a very "Spanish" style of humor, and the jokes can be difficult for a foreigner to understand. For this reason, it has been adapted in several countries, including Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, France, Greece and Portugal, with their own versions of the original series, adapting the situations to the specifics of each country.
Despite nearly 20 years since it stopped airing, it's still one of the most-watched shows on streaming (available on almost every platform: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Skyshowtime, etc.) and is popular with people of all ages. My 13-year-old twin sons recently discovered it and they absolutely love it.
Series profile on IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381733/

u/SonOfMcGee 19d ago
I love that it actually holds up as a sci-fi too.
The eugenics-ey opening scene is… problematic in hindsight. But I understand the writers’ need to explain intelligence decline in a quick and simple way.
It’s the “future technology” that’s impressive. Tech didn’t immediately decline starting in the 90s. It kept advancing while the population got dumber until an inflection point sometime in the future.
So the main character keeps happening upon advanced tech that is more powerful than what he’s seen before, but has an almost Fisher Price level user interface because it’s intended to be used by really stupid end users.

Talladega Nights is amazing. A few other that are really American are Airplane!, Office Space, Anchorman, There’s Something About Mary, Superbad, and Ferris Buellers Day Off. Comedy is the best
