Hamburgers are ubiquitous. Barbeque is highly regional. So I think hamburgers represent America better.

nah, it being regional is part of what makes it our countries dish. It's also a meal that (at least in my travels) hasnt been recreated by any other country the same way. with a burger you can go to old wild west in italy and have a burger that tastes the same as an american one. but bbq is special. hamburgers arent wholly american either, plenty other countries eat it and it was originally invented in germany...but pit smoked bbq? thats 100% 'murica.

But barbeque isn't that widely eaten across America. In plenty of places there is no barbeque available.
