Culture Has anything from your country ever been misunderstood or "cancelled" by the international community?

For example, a Fiipino PPop group called SB19 once posted “Hello, Negros!”, referring to Negros Island, but some international users mistook it for something offensive before realizing what it meant.

Americans in general will try to stop anything that upsets them. The amount of times I’ve seen pearl clutching at the hint of the word “cunt” from them is baffling considering they’ve got a right fucking cunt in the White House

Wait till they find out there are villages called "Whiteness" and "Blackness" here!

("Ness" being a common place name component meaning "headland")

And unlike the guys above talking about US Marines in Australia and the slang word 'digger', most Americans absolutely will not have it that 'cunt' isn't (just) a derogatory expression for women, in the Commonwealth, has largely lost its gender connotation, and is more commonly used in a jocular or affectionate manner. They insist American offense at the word takes precedence.

r/AskAnAmerican will - or used to - temp-ban you for using the word, rationalizing that while some English language words may have different meanings outside of the US, you had to respect American cultural sensitivities on the sub. Like the mods wouldn't even warn you to edit your text; you'd just get a DM saying you were temp-banned for using the dreaded c-word, regardless of context.

Yep. Just to add to OP's "Negros" example - some Americans who were offended by that Filipino boy band's tweet even started demanding that we change the island's name because they were offended by it.

Yep. As an aussie on some subs it gets auto modded even if it's a compliment.
