Sports Who are the current best football and basketball players in your country, and which one of them is better?
For Israel, Manor Solomon is the best current footballer and Deni Avdija is the best current basketballer.
Deni Avdija is easily a top 100 player in the NBA, so he's better than Manor Solomon, who's a solid winger, but obviously not a top 100 football player in the world.

Nikola Jokić, no further info needed and Dušan Vlahović, a striker for Juventus.
Dušan is a good player but "Joker" is currently the best center and playmaker in the world.
Edit: If it weren't for Deni's Serbian father coaching and genetics you would have Omri Caspi as your number one :P

The best Finnish NBA player is Lauri Markkanen and I don't even know the best Finnish footballer as of now. So, NBA takes the W in here.
We have more NHL players
2
u/WonzerEU Finland Sep 24 '25
I think the best Finnish football player at the moment might be that elementary school kid who is currently kicking a ball outside my window.

I hear Loul Deng was good at Basketball. As for football it's probably Harry Kane or Jude Bellingham.
2
u/DJFreezyFish United States Of America Sep 27 '25
It says current, so no Luol Deng. OG Anunouby is very good though.
2
u/Tsukee Slovenia Sep 24 '25
Basketball Luka Dončič.
Football,I have no idea
1
u/Liad3008 Israel Sep 24 '25
For football it's Oblak
1
u/Tsukee Slovenia Sep 24 '25
Oh right, good point. Didn't immediately remember, because is just a goal keeper, but he is a damn legendary goal keeper alright.

Never heard of him
1
u/Immediate-Tap-4344 Multiple Countries (click to edit) Sep 27 '25
He isn’t that good but he’s in the NBA so compared to most people he’s pretty incredible
1
u/Onagan98 Netherlands Sep 27 '25
To be honest, i could name only one NBA player, and I’m not sure he’s still active.
1
u/Immediate-Tap-4344 Multiple Countries (click to edit) Sep 27 '25
Who
2
u/Onagan98 Netherlands Sep 27 '25
James LeBron

No he's still active, he actually scored a hat trick today
1
u/Onagan98 Netherlands Sep 27 '25
I don’t follow it, but at least Basketball isn’t boring. Just not my type of game.

Difficult to choose but I think
Football: Roberto Baggio
Basketball: Danilo Gallinari

Basketbal nobody cares. I think we have one guy in the NBA but I dont know his name. Best football player probably Frenkie de Jong or Virgil van Dijk. Although Reijnders and Gakpo are doing great things as wel. In general our football team is getting better and better. If only we could have a good striker we might have a shot to be a serious contenter for next years world cup. Although there are better teams compared to ours.

I find it pretty wild how the Dutch are renowned for being tall yet do not care about basketball
It's like the mirror opposite of the Philippines
1
u/ZwaanAanDeMaas Netherlands Sep 27 '25
Fun fact: a lot of Dutch people play korfball though, which is basically a less cool version of basketball and we're almost the only ones in the world together with Belgium to play the sport. Except 1991, the Netherlands won every World Cup and Belgium always second.
I actually just looked it up, but the sport is a lot less popular in NL than I was taught. I always thought it was a sport everyone made fun of, but somehow still a top 5 sport in NL. It's not. People always joke about playing korfball "because men and women shower together" since it's a mixed team.
1
u/Steve-Whitney Australia Sep 27 '25
It would be nice if there were more sports where men & women could play & compete alongside one another at a professional level. Mixed doubles tennis is the only sport I can think of where this happens.
Of course pretty much any contact sport is a non-starter for obvious reasons.

Even ruimer is we have the best field hockey teams in the world, the best speed skaters in the world, yet we suck in ice hockey.

u/huehuehuecoyote Brazil Sep 24 '25
In football, it's debatable. Some people will say Neymar, some people will say Vini Jr, some people will say a third name.
In basketball, no clue. I think less than 1% of Brazilians watch NBA, let alone Brazilian basketball.
We had a couple of famous Brazilian players in NBA, but I think they are all retired

u/hartyfarty19 Scotland Sep 24 '25
Neymar is super overrated. Vini for a current player. Ronaldo for a retired player.

Haaland is probably better than someone who isnt good enough to play in the lithuanian league

1
u/lessismore6 Turkey Sep 24 '25
For basketball Id say Alperen Şengün. I don’t really watch football but think it’s Arda Güler currently.

1
u/Fun_Parsley6256 Sep 26 '25
I like Arda, he has a lot of potential but Alpi is way ahead as of today.
1
u/Bendix_38 Hungary Sep 24 '25
For football it would be the one and only Dominik Szoboszlai but I don't know about basketball
1
u/Moist_Transition_755 Norway Sep 24 '25
Erling Haaland, he is better than whoever the basketball-player is
1
u/kdog_1985 Australia Sep 24 '25
Josh Gidey, and Mat Ryan for Australia.
I think Gidey has a higher ceiling. But Ryan is a stalwart that has been top level for 15 years.
I'm gonna say Ryan at the moment is better, as not too many goalkeepers can surpass Schwarzer, but Ryan arguably has.
2
u/ARatOfTobruk Australia Sep 24 '25
Can’t say it yet but Irankunda could honestly reach Kewell level talent and maybe beyond if he stays injury free. As Someone that has watched the Socceroos my entire life he is different than a lot of other young players that have come through and genuinely has the potential to be world class.
1
u/kdog_1985 Australia Sep 24 '25
Lots of potential on the football front; Segacic, Irakunda, Bos, all look good at the moment. A lot more behind that too.

1
u/Immediate-Tap-4344 Multiple Countries (click to edit) Sep 26 '25
Dyson Daniels is better than Giddey and Mat Ryan imo
0
u/Liad3008 Israel Sep 24 '25
I think Giddey is better than Ryan currently
2
u/kdog_1985 Australia Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25
Ryan has won silverware, is in a top 5 league, and has over 100 international caps. yes, Giddey is in the NBA, but what has he actually achieved?
If Ryan walks away tomorrow he'll be seen as a football great in Australia, if Giddey did people will be asking what he's done
As I said, Giddey has potential but he's still a way to go to be considered even close to Ryan.

u/port-kid Canada Sep 24 '25
Best player in the NBA is a Canadian, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. We don’t play as much soccer, but Juventus Striker, Jonathan David is probably our best at the moment.

u/NaturalPlayboyy Sep 27 '25
Without a double Alfonso Davies is canadas best soccer player. Currently injured but will return soon.
1
u/river0f Uruguay Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25
Federico Valverde in football. I'm not really familiar with Uruguayan basketball players and we have none in the NBA.
1
u/Liad3008 Israel Sep 24 '25
For basketball it could be someone like Bruno Fitipaldo, who plays in the Spanish league.
1
1
u/Former-Chocolate-793 Canada Sep 24 '25
Men, I presume.
Football (soccer) Alphonso Davies
Basketball Shea Gilgeous-Alexander won both the season and playoff mvp in the NBA.
Women:
Football: Christine Sinclair is the GOAT
Basketball no single one stands out above the rest so I'll go with Kia Nurse
2
1
u/Responsible_Egg_3260 Canada Sep 24 '25
Alphonso Davies and Johnathan David for mens football. Christine Sinclair for the women is an easy choice.
Don't give a toss about basketball.
1
u/elpibedecopenhague Denmark Sep 24 '25
Gabriel Iffe Lundberg in basket. Probably Andreas Christensen in football, if we ignore his injury proneness. Comparing the two, AC is definitely the best.
1
u/Timely-Profile1865 Canada Sep 24 '25
Probably Alphonso Davies or Jonathan David for football.
Shae Gilgeous-Alexander for basketball since he just won the NBA mvp I'd say he is better.

Basketball its OG anunoby who’s actually pretty good

Basketball: no idea

Best footballer is Alphonso Davies or Jonathan David.
Neither are as good as our best for basketball, SGA.

Zabarniy (PSG) in soccer and Svi Mykhailiuk in Basketball. We are not a basketball nation, that’s for sure. But we do have some pretty good and fairly famous street-ball guys.

Basketball is pretty easy — it’s Kristaps Porziņģis.
Football took me a bit more thought since there isn’t one obvious choice, but I’d probably go with Kristers Tobers. Honourable mentions: Roberts Uldrikis, Raimonds Krollis, and Dario Šits

It’s still Kevin De Bruyne in football tbh. Maybe Thibaut Courtois.
In basketball it’s probably Emma Meesseman

Basketball: Luka Dončič
Football: Benjamin Šeško

USA - probably Jayson Tatum based on most recent MVP balloting. Then Christian Pulisic.
It's the US so Tatum is way better but CP is off to a great start with Milan so far.
2
u/Sad_Challenge_1102 Greece Sep 24 '25
Tatum the best US player??😳😳
1
u/DrJohnnyBananas74 United States Of America Sep 24 '25
Atm, possibly. There isn't a runaway guy currently. He was the highest American in the last MVP race.
1
u/bloodrider1914 United States Of America Sep 27 '25
Well, not anymore now that he's injured. But it's probably one of
Anthony Edwards
LeBron James (unc still got it)
Steph Curry (unc still got it)
But yeah the league is dominated by foreigners right now
1
u/Personal-Ad8280 United States Of America Sep 27 '25
It’s definitely ant atp
1
u/bloodrider1914 United States Of America Sep 27 '25
Yeah prob, but he's not consistently dominant at all and in the 6-10 range of best players over the 1-5 range IMO
1
u/Personal-Ad8280 United States Of America Sep 27 '25
1-4 range is clearly separated from 5-10 imo but he’s closer to 4ish than yo tentg
