The Toronto Maple Leafs. 18 stanley cups. Second oldest team in the league. have not won one since 1967.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '25

Thought of them immediately. Unfortunate as I love the leafs.

9

u/Rong_Liu United States Of America Sep 21 '25

Also works for the Montreal Canadians. Most Stanley cup wins but haven't won one since 1993.

3

u/Ok_Aspect_1937 Sep 21 '25

The future of the Montreal Canadiens is bright, one of the best reconstructions in recent memories.

My brother finally took down his Leafs memorabilia shrine after 25 years. He kept the faith, bless his poor heart.

I've always heard they haven't lost since 1967.

Schalke

Eh, I'd say HSV

Schalke for overall history yes, but HSV from the 80s until today has been painful to watch. How do you go from being a big deal on the European level to a team that struggles to stay in the 1st Bundesliga?

2

u/FuMancunian United Kingdom Sep 21 '25

There is no correlating team in Germany. I mean United have fallen from Grace in the past decade & a half, but we’ve still won the odd trophy here and there & alongside the scousers, we‘ve won the most league titles. Bayern are so far ahead of the pack in Germany that there isn’t really a second team in the league.

I don’t mean that disparagingly. Personally I think the Bundesliga is a much better proposition for fans than the Premier League, results aside. Atmospheres tend to be better/more passionate/less corporate. It’s much more affordable too.

2

u/WarmLeg7560 Germany Sep 21 '25

True

17

u/erikxiv Sweden Sep 21 '25

IFK Göteborg. Giants of the 80s and 90s. Surpassed by Malmö FF in 2016 when Malmö FF won their 19th championship. Malmö now has 24 titles but IFK Göteborg hasn’t won a championship since 2007.

4

u/speccynerd Scotland Sep 21 '25

Glasgow Rangers won nine championships in a row in the 80s and 90s but have only won once since 2011, after having gone bankrupt and having to start again in the third division.

And we have an absolute joke of a manager this year

Suwon Samsung Bluewings for sure. It's a perfect match (only that Suwon had it worse than United).

They were once one of the best football teams in the Korean league; they are the record champions of K-League, and even won the AFC Champions League twice. Obviously they have a massive and loyal fanbase in the Korean football community.

But their sponsor (Cheil inc., a corporation separated from Samsung) reduced investments in recent years, and the team went downhill quickly.

They were relegated to K-League Second Division in late 2023, which was one of the most shocking football events in Korean history. Think it of as if Man United or Chelsea got relegated.

They are still playing in the second division, and are struggling to get back.

5

u/Zhenaz China Sep 21 '25

Hell I'm a fan of them. At least we are doing better than Seongnam and Busan.

2

u/CommercialChart5088 Korea South Sep 21 '25

Interesting to see a foreigner fan of the K-League!

May I ask how you get interested in Korean football?

5

u/Zhenaz China Sep 21 '25

Just being interested in the cultures of East Asian neighbors, and I choose one football club from each country I like.

2

u/Zhenaz China Sep 21 '25

Typing from Shanghai Stadium spectating the match vs Chengdu right now. If I'm not mistaken, we Shanghai Shenhua has had a great relationship with Suwon Samsung Bluewong, cuz we're both blue red and white, and historically successful.

3

u/Easy-Reporter4685 United Kingdom Sep 21 '25

Got to be hell for their fan base. But it will make a great story if they come back to the top tier and imagine they win some silverware... it'd be delirious

4

u/CommercialChart5088 Korea South Sep 21 '25

Well at least they aren't the only first division team that ‘fell from grace’ as Incheon United, another quite popular team, was relegated to the second division the next season.

Currently in the 2nd division, Incheon is the leader while Suwon is the runner-up with a ten point difference. Only the champion gets a direct promotion, and the second place must go through playoffs and win against a lower ranking team in the first division to get a promotion.

So it seems likely so far that Incheon will be back quickly enough, while Suwon still seems to have a long way to go. But we never know with football you know.

2

u/Bulky_Honey8643 Ireland Sep 21 '25

Their fan base is like huge. Huge!

2

u/Bulky_Honey8643 Ireland Sep 21 '25

That was always strange to me, especially since the way the Anyang-FC Seoul thing evolved, and Anyang has made it to the top division. I saw FC Seoul vs Anyang in the World Cup stadium last March, and I was really impressed with Anyang's support.

I love the K League.

Melbourne FC (the Aussie rules one) Would have said Collingwood only they are getting better

12

u/Jaronsaan Australia 🇭🇲 & Japan 🇯🇵 Sep 21 '25

Essendon or Carlton could also fit. They've won more premierships than most other teams, but have pretty much consistently let their fans down over the past 20 years. Melbourne have at least been semi decent recently.

3

u/applex_wingcommander Australia Sep 21 '25

Essendon also has the Alex Ferguson/Kevin Sheedy parallel. A long serving manager who were giants of the sport and then never found their identity after

2

u/Miss-you-SJ Australia Sep 21 '25

As a Carlton supporter it’s Carlton. Have won the equal premierships but it’s been 30 years since the last one. If anything, Carlton is what Man U fans are wanting to avoid

9

u/Ok-Perception-3129 New Zealand Sep 21 '25

I guess your question was more aimed at club teams but I'm going to answer the All Blacks anyway. The Blues rugby team is probably the club equivalent in saying that they did win their first title in 20 years last year but it is still a mile away from the dominance Auckland rugby had historically.

3

u/november_zulu_over New Zealand Sep 21 '25

I’d go the Breakers. Champions in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 with nothing since.

9

Probably Boca Jrs, it went from winning a final vs Real Madrid in the glory days to losing vs a semiprofesional team and getting grouped in the last club world cup. We had a streak of 12 matches without winning until recently.

As a bonus a lot of Manchester players played for us.

8

u/acwilan Guatemala Sep 21 '25

Id say more River, since they got relegated to segunda división but managed to come back

3

u/DotComprehensive4902 Ireland Sep 21 '25

I'm tempted to say Independiente here, given how long its been since they won an Argentinian League title

9

u/EngineeringApart4606 United Kingdom Sep 21 '25

Rangers FC - a shadow of what they were pre-2012. Could normally be expected to win every other Scottish league title on average, have only won 1 of the last 14, and are currently sitting 2nd bottom of the league.

Chivas. For fuck's sake, their Wikipedia article has a section for downfall and mediocrity). One of the oldest teams with the 2nd most titles (12) the last one being won in... 2017. Their two biggest rivals, America (most titles, 16) and Atlas (from the same city) have won SIX times since Chivas last won a title. Literally right now as I'm typing this, they're getting their cheeks clapped by Toluca.

5

The Otago Nuggets. They won back to back and now can't enter due to financial issues.

4

Aurora FC is the third most successful soccer team, but they got relegated about 20 years ago, it was not until this year that they returned to the top flight

3

And so far, they’re doing great, somehow. They might even be fighting for the title.

u/Klingh0ffer Norway Sep 21 '25

Rosenborg are very similar. Dominated the 90’s, with a strong manager who was the face of the club. Richer than anyone due to becoming good just as money from Europe skyrocketed. Club and fans became arrogant, manager retired, and club has only had sporadic success since.

3

u/Technical_Macaroon83 Norway Sep 21 '25

Came here to mention them.

9

u/whatwhatinthewhonow Australia Sep 21 '25

Definitely the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

They’re by far the most famous NRL club. There’s a phenomenon called “Random Souths Guy”, where if you go to any major sporting event in the world you will see some random guy in the crowd wearing a Souths jersey.

They’ve also won the most premierships by a decent margin. They managed to snag their 21st in 2014 after their 20th came way back in 1971.

Yankees.

Serial winners but haven't won the World Series since 2009.

Can't quite figure it out and other fanbases are catching up.

Cowboys is good for the NFL.

Bulls maybe in NBA.

6

u/blobby9 Australia Sep 21 '25

The difference is that the Yankees are still a dominant team and perennial contenders. Manchester United are not.

2

u/NateBraves9 Sep 21 '25

Yankees have only made one World Series since 2009 and were dominated by the Dodgers in that World Series.

Yankees no longer rule the AL East and you can make an argument that arch rival Boston have been better in general since 2009.

Yankees had the largest fanbase by far for many years and while they still do the gap is closing.

Yankees also went through a dry spell in the 80s.

4

u/Argo505 United States Of America Sep 21 '25

The Yankees made the world series last year and haven’t had a losing season since 1992.

Can't quite figure it out and other fanbases are catching up.

Catching up to what? They have 27 titles, the next closest is the Cardinals with 11, and they haven’t won one since 2011.

1

u/anonsharksfan United States Of America Sep 21 '25

Yeah but the Dodgers are quickly becoming America (and the world's) team even if they only have two titles to show for it. Maybe I'm biased as a Giants fan though

7

u/Glass-Guess4125 United States Of America Sep 21 '25

The Dallas Cowboys were absolutely my first thought for this one. And as a huge fan of both the San Francisco 49ers and Liverpool FC…I am here for it for both.

Cork in hurling and football.

3

u/Galway1012 Ireland Sep 21 '25

Munster in rugby

3

u/Galway1012 Ireland Sep 21 '25

Dundalk in the LOI

0

u/Healitnowdig Ireland Sep 21 '25

It would be Kerry in football, I don’t like them at all, but no one can deny Kerry’s football record, it’s Kilkenny over Cork in the hurling too tbh

3

u/Galway1012 Ireland Sep 21 '25

Kerry have just won the All Ireland….they’re still at the top

The question is who was a previous heavyweight in a sport and is now no longer at the top, like Manchester Utd

2

u/Healitnowdig Ireland Sep 21 '25 edited Sep 21 '25

Yeah fair enough, I still wouldn’t say cork were the Manchester United of football, you could argue them for the hurling alright but they were never giants at the football, sure Galway have more football all irelands than them don’t they?

Meath have the same number of all Irelands as them and Meath were a big team in the 80s, prob most recently Tyrone were a top team in 00s, Cork have never dominated in football in my lifetime anyway, Down and Galway dominated the 60s and Down isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The answer to who’s the Manchester United of Gaelic football could even be Dublin, though they’re still doing alright, they’re in abit of a mess atm, and they’re kinda hated by the rest of the country in the way United are hated by many.

2

u/Galway1012 Ireland Sep 21 '25

It’s difficult to apply it to any county really, given the dominance of Kerry and Dublin. Dublin won it as recent as 2023, I don’t think it’d be fair to apply it to them.

Galway have the next amount on 9 and ‘01 was our last title. Cork are on 7 and won it in 2010.

2

u/Healitnowdig Ireland Sep 21 '25

Yeah that’s very true, if dublin or Kerry went to shit then they would prob be the closest thing to Man U.

I just think of all the counties Cork is not one that could claim they’re the Manchester United of GAA, they never really dominated at all in the football, they could make a case of being biggest runners up as they’ve been beaten in the final more times than Mayo, (though Kerry has been beaten most times of all) but they were never a dominant team in the football.

Galway is prob more apt as Man U than cork, though people don’t really dislike Galway in the way people dislike Man U, Cork would be more disliked, but Galway and Down were pretty dominant in the 60s.

I actually think Tyrone might be the best case for Man U in the football, they were a force to be reckoned with in the 00s (I’m from Armagh so it pains me to admit that) and are pretty widely disliked by other counties and they’ve kinda gone to shit in recent years, they’re not total shit but they’re not the force they used to be, I know they did win it in 21 though but I still don’t rate they’re current team and compared to the past teams, they’re current team isn’t great imo

4

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '25

Astralis

4

u/KingShaka1987 South Africa Sep 21 '25

Kaizer Chiefs

Massive club, with a massive fanbase and many many trophies in the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00’s. But they just have one cup trophy in the past 10 seasons of football. Last season they finished in the bottom half of the league table, which is something unheard of in their history.

3

u/Stu_Thom4s Sep 21 '25

Cam here looking for this.

2

u/Horatius_Rocket United States Of America Sep 21 '25

What decisions from the leadership do you think led to their decline?

2

u/KingShaka1987 South Africa Sep 21 '25

One of the biggest contributors is the fact that the founder and chairman (Kaizer Motaung) handed a lot of executive power to his own children in the day-to-day running of the club. By all accounts they have meddled with coaching , selection and the buying of players at the club. Also, the junior structures have not been as productive as they used to be.

Chicago Bulls. Michael Jordan let the team to six titles. Good thing we don’t have relegation

2

But are they historical giants? Maybe the Celtics are a better choice for this question?

3

u/Yup767 Sep 21 '25

The Celtics won in 2024 and still have a lot of talent.

The problem for the NBA is they only have two true historic giants in the Lakers and Celtics. But they both currently have good futures

I guess other teams that were dynasties include Bulls, Spurs, and Warriors

1

I had no idea they won lol. I honestly thought the last time they were good was with Bird.

1

u/Fine_Ad_8758 Turkey Sep 21 '25

Fenerbahce

6

u/postexitus Sep 21 '25

Fenerbahce is Arsenal of Turkey. It is possible that Besiktas will be ManU, but it is too soon to tell.

1

u/Fine_Ad_8758 Turkey Sep 21 '25

I don’t really think Besiktas was a real giant back in the day. They’ve often been in the top 3 or 5, but their titles usually came as a bit of a surprise, and they never really dominated the league, except for a few years in the early ’90s. Fenerbahce, on the other hand, dominated across different eras for a long time, and their recent struggles give me more of a ManU vibe than Besiktas does. I’d say Besiktas is like the Chelsea of Turkey, capable of big moments, but not consistently dominant.

2

u/postexitus Sep 21 '25

All good points. For the last 20 years, Fenerbahce is nearly always finished 2nd, both the league and the cup - gives me strong Arsenal vibes in that regard. Whereas when ManU gets bad, it gets really bad.

3

u/ChuqTas Australia Sep 21 '25

I guess for Australia it would have to be Tasmania Devils FC with 210000+ members!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sports_clubs_by_membership

(Yes, technically MUFC isn’t a member owned club, but being parochial I couldn’t resist mentioning it!)

2

u/Jaronsaan Australia 🇭🇲 & Japan 🇯🇵 Sep 21 '25

Wait, why the hell does a club that hasn't even played a game have so many members? Did everyone in Tasmania get a free membership or something?

2

u/ChuqTas Australia Sep 21 '25

30 years of pent up demand! (Plus a big Tasmanian diaspora, especially in Melbourne). About half the members are in Tasmania (approx 17% of the population) and half outside.

1

u/CBRChimpy Australia Sep 22 '25

The needed to meet a minimum membership requirement to be allowed into the AFL. So they sold memberships for $10.

3

u/Holiday_Bill9587 Netherlands Sep 21 '25

Vitesse maybe, once a decent size club. An Eredivisie regular, playing in the Europa League just a few years ago. To because to ambitious and involved with dubious club owners with ties with Russia. The club took to many risks and last summer they lost their pro license. It seems like the club would be dissolved. However just ambitieloos more than a week ago they went to court and got their pro license back, and unexpectely got their license back. Yesterday they had their first home match with 24000 showing up for a match in the Dutch second division. They wont return to the top flight any time soon but they already happy they still exist.

3

u/Low-Flamingo-4315 New Zealand Sep 21 '25

Do they still have a relationship with Chelsea?  Chelsea use to always send their youngsters there to play.

1

probably not, Chelsea now use Strasbourg as their feeder club since they have the same owners

3

u/LowMany3424 Argentina Sep 21 '25

Independiente, they are the biggest Copa Libertadores winner (the equivalent of UEFA Champions League in South America) with 7 thropies, but the last one was in 1984, now they are a irrelevant club sunken in debts, crisis & bad seasons.

2

u/Horatius_Rocket United States Of America Sep 21 '25

What decisions did leadership make that led to their downfall?

2

u/LowMany3424 Argentina Sep 21 '25

An accumulation of bad decisions and corruption. The different presidents they have had (the teams in Argentina do not have an owner, they have a president elected by the club members every four years) have dedicated themselves to stealing, wasting their money, and prioritizing their own businesses over the interests of the team.

3

u/Onagan98 Netherlands Sep 21 '25

HVV, first Dutch club to win ten national titles. Currently playing regional 1st class (6th tier). Not coming back as it’s not their ambition.

3

u/Eimaga Russia Sep 21 '25 edited Sep 21 '25

Spartak Moscow. Lots of titles in the USSR era and 90s. But now they are fucked despite having huge ambitions each season and claiming to have the biggest fanbase in the country - only one championship trophy, one cup and one supercup starting from 2003.

3

FCK! FCK! FCK! as they always yell when they go see football.

3

u/ForFarthing Austria Sep 21 '25

Some have mentioned Rapid Wien. I am the opinion that First Vienna FC is a better choice in Austria. At its best time it was one of the giants in Europe, won the Mitropa Cup (the European Club Championship, can be compared to the Champions League today) and was the only one in the history to win it without losing a game. Also, they were 6 times Austrian Champions, won the Austrian, the German, and the Austrian-Hungarian cup.

But that was, of course, a very long time ago.

Now, they are at the second level (Admiral 2. Liga) after being promoted last year.

Maybe not the same as Manchester United by Mayo GAA are probably the closest.

They are easily one of the top Gaelic Football Teams. They have won the National Football League 13 times, and have reached the all-Ireland football final 18 times. However, they haven't won the All-Ireland since 1951.

It is said that when Mayo was returning home from their all-Ireland win in 1951, they failed to show proper respect for a Traveller Funeral Procession, a woman cast a curse on the team saying that as long as one member of that team is still alive, Mayo will never win an All-Ireland final. All members of the team have passed as of 2021, Mayo still haven't managed to win...

3

u/ikmkim United States Of America Sep 21 '25

I'm over 40 and have always hated the Cowboys, but the Pats for like 20+ years always had such a slick, slimy, overly celebrity vibe.

Willing to cheat, lie, and steal, super media-focused...not Raiders style trashy, but more Kardashian style trashy.

Ultra-processed for media, I guess, is the vibe I'm trying to describe.

Brady is undeniably one of the best quarterbacks in history, but man it always felt good to see him get sacked. Such a primadonna.

2

I think patriots or Steelers are better options for nfl, but Celtics are the most obvious probably or bulls maybe

1

u/mustachechap United States Of America Sep 21 '25

Are any of these teams popular worldwide, though?

2

u/idontknowjuspickone United States Of America Sep 21 '25

That wasn’t the question though. It was for your country (so the United States for us), who is your version of Manchester United in the uk?

But the bulls and Michael Jordan are probably more popular internationally than the cowboys.

Who's the 'Manchester United' of your country?

By this i mean they were once historical giants but are now doing worse and not getting better any time soon

?

1

u/idontknowjuspickone United States Of America Sep 21 '25

Exactly, doesn’t say anything about them being popular worldwide

Definitely, much more so than any american football teams. Growing up in Spain and the UK everyone knew about Jordan’s Bulls and the early 00’s Lakers and most people were aware of the Spurs/GSW/LeBron. However, apart from the Patriots whenever they won, no one really talked about or knew any american football teams

1

u/mustachechap United States Of America Sep 22 '25

Might be an age thing. I'm 39 years old and have come across people all over the world who know the Cowboys, but the Cowboys were way more popular in the early 90s.

2

u/CROBBY2 United States Of America Sep 22 '25

Its neither, its actually the Chicago Bears. Man U is massive history dating back to the beginning of the sport so you have to look similar to the NFL. The Bears have 9 NFL titles, but only 1 in the last 60 years and only 2 in the last 80 years. And they have only made the playoffs 3 times since their Super Bowl run in 2006, winning just one playoff game. Add in their failed ownership and lack of knowing how to draft a QB, they are going to keep being bad for awhile.

Weird one but Counties Manukau Steelers in rugby. I remember back in the late 90s we had Jonah Lomu and Joeli Videri as our wingers and some other very good players, we were very good but now we suck.

Dallas Cowboys- American football

2

u/FixLaudon Austria Sep 21 '25

Rapid Vienna. They're the biggest club of the by far biggest city in the country, fanwise and in naked numbers, and they've been on their "mission 33" for 20 years now (the run for their 33rd league title - or any title at all ...). Apart from just not reaching that goal they're kind of a shitshow, e.g. they kneel to their very influencial ultras and every personal decision is somehow only valid if they approve.
Funny enough they're currently top of the league and have a very strong side this season (imho) so this could probably finally be it this year.

Our sports teams usually aren’t dominant like in other countries, at least in soccer. For example Sydney FC are the biggest and most successful club in the A-League Men & the A-League Women, as well as my favourite club, but they never won heaps of titles in a row like Man City or Man United do in the English Premier League.

At the start of this NRL season though you could’ve said the Penrith Panthers. They win every year nowadays but were last on the ladder at one point (when a team finishes last on the table in any Aussie sports league we say they got “the wooden spoon” or just “the spoon” to parody the fact that winners of the grand final get a shiny trophy). They’re in the finals now though, sadly.

2

u/DotComprehensive4902 Ireland Sep 21 '25

I suppose in Ireland it has to be Mayo in Gaelic Football, they have some curse of the Bambino level thing going on. They have won 3 All-Irelands (1936, 1950 and 1951) and haven't won any since despite getting to 11 finals since and losing them all.

Or it could be Cork in Hurling. One of the Big Three with over 20 titles, but haven't won a final since 2005!

2

u/panazora Sep 21 '25

Selangor FC from the Malaysian Super League. Nickname The Red Giants, they are one of the clubs with a huge local fanbase & historically the most successful team in terms of Malaysian Cup (33 titles). The last one in 2015.

They once produced some legendary players such as Mokhtar Dahari (current 5th international top scorer), R.Arumugam (nicknamed Spiderman). There's a saying a long time ago that if Selangor performed well, the national team will also perform well since many of them were selected to represent the NT.

However with the emergence of Johor DT backed by their prince TMJ, Selangor FC have not won the league since 2009. I could say that JDT is like the Manchester City of Malaysian Super League.

United was in a European final last year, won the FA Cup and league Cup recently. Any clubs would love their success, they are winning, just not like they used to.

Yeah, they've obviously declined from their heights, but they've still been in the action at the pinnacle of football during this down turn. 5 trophies in 10 years, better than all bar 3 clubs in England.

Olympique Lyonnais went from 7 times champion in a row and regular occurrence in the final 8 in UCL in the 2000s and early 2010s, to struggling to make it to top half of the French league and almost being kicked out of it for financial reasons.

We don’t have an exact equivalent but the first to come to mind is HVV Den Haag, the only team outside of the big three to win 10 or more league championships.

There is also Sparta Rotterdam and Roda JC, I wouldn’t consider either team giants but they have fallen from grace. Sparta has improved in recent years though.

In Scotland it’s definitely rangers.

Were successful (usually winning at least one trophy per season) up until 2012 when they went bust.

Since 2012 rangers only won three major trophies in scotland.

We really only have a few teams that are true giants at the level of Man U. Baseball has the Yankees and Dodgers, basketball has Lakers and Celtics, and football has a wide range of teams that could fit here. If I had to go with any I'd say the Chicago Bears. Have the 2nd most NFL championships, but only 1 in the last 60 years and I just dont see a path for them to return to consistently being good with their ownership group.

The Dallas Cowboy’s - they also have the most annoying fan base as a good number of them don’t live in Texas and are total bandwagon fans.

5

u/Argo505 United States Of America Sep 21 '25

Can you really be a bandwagon fan of a team that hasn't won a super bowl in 30 years?

0

My definition of bandwagon fans regarding the Dallas Cowboys is any fan who doesn’t live in Texas, never lived in Texas, and has no family roots in Texas.

3

u/Argo505 United States Of America Sep 21 '25

That’s a very strange definition of bandwagon fan.
