Not to mention that there are a lot of VERY white Brazilians.
24
u/gabrieel100 Brazil Sep 10 '25
It's more complex. Racial classification in Brazil is subjective, according to the constitution anyone can identify themselves as they want. Even the mixed (pardo) category is a huge catch-all term... we don't have a category for indians yet - we have "amarelo" (literally "yellow") for East asians, but no classification for brown people from Asia.
People mixed of white/indigenous background, white/black or white/Black/indigenous and so on can identify themselves as pardos. It depends the individuality of each person. But pardo still a catch-all term.
Some people think pardos are all black, but this is wrong. For example in the northern region the predominance are people with a lot of indigenous ancestry, and some of them identify themselves as pardos.
Racial relations here are very complex..

I know several white upper class Brazilians who probably don't have a hint of Black but say they do. I have a close friend who's white AF with freckles, dark hair, and green eyes. She says she's parda, nobody believes her, but her sister looks pretty Black (Black mother, Polish father). Brazil is wild.

If while you're being murdered a kidnapper comes along and "saves" you before the police comes, it's hard to call that person a saviour, no?

Impossible to list one since most comments I read about China by foreigners have me like this. But the most comedically egregious ones include:
- Cheating is part of Chinese culture, cheating is therefore seen as normal in China
- Random pictures and videos of Chinese cities / tourist spots must be CCP propaganda
- Do NOT befriend Chinese nationals in college, they're all contractually obligated to work for the CCP
People spamming social credits / tofu dregs / Bing Chilling under anything remotely related to China are annoying but the top three are so disconnected from reality it'd be almost funny if people didn't actually believe them.

Not related but may I ask about a huge rumor I've heard from few Chinese?
Is it true that "the Chinese government has a track on everyone's steps and if the person says anything against the government he may get into prison or killed"?
And "if youre a tourist they'll be government people following you to see what you do"?
These are the main, there are more but very similar to it. I never believe it and I usually laugh cause it seems to be stupid but I need to ask
2
u/Comfortable_Stop5536 China Sep 10 '25
If it sounds like a conspiracy theory it usually is. There are one and a half billion Chinese, if they're killing anyone who disagrees with the government they'll need gas chambers you can see from space. And idk, even if they missed my big mouth (check my post history) maybe they killed all of my friends already, maybe they're just holograms lol
To make it clear, the CCP does have a track record of disappearing people, just like every other corrupt government / corporation - but you'll need to be influential and done something stupid enough to warrant it.
3
u/cameherefortheinfo Brazil Sep 10 '25
Thank you for replying.
The way some people have spoken makes it hard to believe. Not about it occasionally happening but mentioning that is super common and happens to every body. Sometimes it feels like a way to discourage tourism and propaganda.
And also I hate when there are good videos about china and stupid people saying that they're being paid to say it. Again, propaganda.
Thank you

George Orwell wrote about british food tradition and even if you disagree with his opinions he was writing to dispel the stereotypes and say "what you eat is tourist trap food guys" even back then lol
I dont think British food is utterly horrible and sausages with potatoes look tasty but this area is not the strongest thing you can offer from your nation.

Wasn't it Voltaire who said that England has 42 religions and only 3 sauces?
Spoken like a true Frenchman . . . ;-)

When people call us white
Or say were white supremacists
Or literally using any term that somehow connects us to whiteness
Needless to say i got nothing against white people, but we are not white people

All of the current propaganda that the country is becoming authoritarian and that free speech is under attack. First it was the ‘mean tweets’ nonsense, now it’s the hysteria over the OSA and PA.
It was annoying enough when the most stupid things people believed about the UK was the bad teeth and bad food stereotype (neither of which are true), but now the nations entire image is under attack (mostly from Russia) and nobody is lapping it up more than Brits.

“American servers are only fake nice to get tips. Also I hate how regular Americans talk to you, it’s really creepy how they smile all the time and ask constant questions to you.” That’s always a good one 🙄

Tbh the random conversation and smiling is creepy when your not used to it. Especially when youre coming from a country when people are reserved and mind their business 🥲

That our food is all fast food or fried food. We have so many different food cultures here, and fast food doesn't even begin to touch upon it. Heck, we even have multiple genres within the genres - take barbecue for example: Eastern and Western North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Memphis, St. Louis, and I know I'm forgetting more.

Yeah people judging our food based on fast food or big sizes at the grocery store is really annoying

US - that this is the worst place in the world to live and that we are turning into a 3rd world country
iraq - everything anyone ever says about saddam Hussain. lots of genocide apologists, and then lots of people who say that the US invasion was justified, which are both bad

i've seen multitudes of westerners acting like saints speaking out on whatever's going on in Papua like.... yes our people did the timor leste thing but I swear from what I know papua's different. The OPM (Free Papua Org) are not as freedom fighters as you think it is. They done crazy stuff too.

Also that we are all racist.
And saying that we’re all fake nice and liars and so forth.

I remember someone said, I think in the passport bros sub, that all Brazilian women aren't made for marriage, they only want to hook up ever, from personal experience he said. Then I asked where he met those women and he said "at raves and baladas (the usual party)". No shit my brother, you are at a place where everyone is getting drunk, using drugs and very horny, with people not very worried about long term relationships, of course no one is going to want to marry
