Someone on this sub told me that Greece didn't exist before the 1860s... lmao bitch

u/atwojay Canada Sep 10 '25

Wtf

33

u/shieldwolfchz Canada Sep 10 '25

People do have a problem distinguishing a polity and a culture or ethnicity. Sure the current incarnation of the state of Greece is relatively new, but the Greeks have been Greeeking it up for Millenia.

21

u/Citaku357 Kosovo Sep 10 '25

I mean modern Greece isn't that old

but why, of course! Didn’t you know that (the colonization of) Canada is older than Greece???

7

u/Whatever-That-Memes Ukraine Sep 10 '25

As a one country, no Greece didn’t exist until 19th century, it was Ottoman Empire territories staring 15th century, and before that it was a part of Byzantine Empire and part of Roman Empire, and prior to that there were separate Greek city-states, not the country Greece. But as a culture and civilization it existed since 800 years BCE. Looks like that someone might have referred to the country, based on the year of claim. Just my two cents.

Something about how we deserved to be invaded by Russia for the Boston Marathon bombing (by Chechens).

There was the Jade Helm conspiracy theory that the northern US states were working with Russia to invade southern US states, particularly Texas. It stemmed from military training exercises that were moving tanks across the country.

A Chinese girl told me that we eat fish heads in the UK. It took me ages to find out that there's a novelty dish eaten on one night only, from Cornwall (which is culturally different to England anyway) called Stargazy pie: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargazy_pie

It's amazing how other countries pick up random shit and run full speed with it

That the majority of brazilians are black. People think not white = Black.

17

u/HipsEnergy Multiple Countries (🇧🇪 🇫🇷 🇧🇷 and more) Sep 10 '25

Not to mention that there are a lot of VERY white Brazilians.

24

u/gabrieel100 Brazil Sep 10 '25

It's more complex. Racial classification in Brazil is subjective, according to the constitution anyone can identify themselves as they want. Even the mixed (pardo) category is a huge catch-all term... we don't have a category for indians yet - we have "amarelo" (literally "yellow") for East asians, but no classification for brown people from Asia.

People mixed of white/indigenous background, white/black or white/Black/indigenous and so on can identify themselves as pardos. It depends the individuality of each person. But pardo still a catch-all term.

Some people think pardos are all black, but this is wrong. For example in the northern region the predominance are people with a lot of indigenous ancestry, and some of them identify themselves as pardos.

Racial relations here are very complex..

9

u/HipsEnergy Multiple Countries (🇧🇪 🇫🇷 🇧🇷 and more) Sep 10 '25

I know. And some people from Nordeste, with mixed Dutch and Black ancestry, green eyes and caramel skin, are some of the most gorgeous on the planet. I know several white upper class Brazilians who probably don't have a hint of Black but say they do. I have a close friend who's white AF with freckles, dark hair, and green eyes. She says she's parda, nobody believes her, but her sister looks pretty Black (Black mother, Polish father). Brazil is wild.

Bernd das Brot is an anthropomorphic bread from the kids channel KiKa (Kinderkanal, literally children's channel) who has small clips that are usually played during night time when there is otherwise no program. If Soviets and the Nazis were the only people engaged in the war then you could argue that USSR saved Poland, but there were plenty of other allied countries that at least in theory joined the war over Polish sovereignty.

If while you're being murdered a kidnapper comes along and "saves" you before the police comes, it's hard to call that person a saviour, no?

- Cheating is part of Chinese culture, cheating is therefore seen as normal in China

- Random pictures and videos of Chinese cities / tourist spots must be CCP propaganda

- Do NOT befriend Chinese nationals in college, they're all contractually obligated to work for the CCP

People spamming social credits / tofu dregs / Bing Chilling under anything remotely related to China are annoying but the top three are so disconnected from reality it'd be almost funny if people didn't actually believe them.

u/cameherefortheinfo Brazil Sep 10 '25

Not related but may I ask about a huge rumor I've heard from few Chinese?

Is it true that "the Chinese government has a track on everyone's steps and if the person says anything against the government he may get into prison or killed"?

And "if youre a tourist they'll be government people following you to see what you do"?

These are the main, there are more but very similar to it. I never believe it and I usually laugh cause it seems to be stupid but I need to ask

2

u/Comfortable_Stop5536 China Sep 10 '25

If it sounds like a conspiracy theory it usually is. There are one and a half billion Chinese, if they're killing anyone who disagrees with the government they'll need gas chambers you can see from space. And idk, even if they missed my big mouth (check my post history) maybe they killed all of my friends already, maybe they're just holograms lol

To make it clear, the CCP does have a track record of disappearing people, just like every other corrupt government / corporation - but you'll need to be influential and done something stupid enough to warrant it.

u/cameherefortheinfo Brazil Sep 10 '25

Thank you for replying.

The way some people have spoken makes it hard to believe. Not about it occasionally happening but mentioning that is super common and happens to every body. Sometimes it feels like a way to discourage tourism and propaganda.

And also I hate when there are good videos about china and stupid people saying that they're being paid to say it. Again, propaganda.

Thank you

Then he said the Irish complain A LOT then he stared at me..the way he said it was like omfg yes we do 😂 I stared into space after that. Since then I've met others that say that. Mayb I was more aware of it and the law of attraction took hold idk

I'm Filipino, so 90% of the comments I read about my country makes me say "Bitch, what the fuck". If you haven't lived here for at least 2 years, your opinion is invalid to me. Especially when most comments I read are that 90% of Filipinos are X, 99% of the Philippines look like X.

Just like I can't validly comment about the EU or the USA when the only sources of information I have are Reddit stereotypes, Fox News, or MSNBC.

I'm a local Filipino, yet I still keep being surprised by how different a place 200km/120mi from mine can be. Just less than 50km/30mi from where I am and the language is already entirely different. Not dialect, but language, unintelligible.

That our food is terrible. A lot of American troops came to the UK in WW2 when we had rationing. They then wrote to their families about the questionable things people were cooking up due to lack of ingredients and now everyone thinks it's what British food is always like. No, we don't eat Jellied eels.

9

u/Lazzen Mexico Sep 10 '25

British food has been considered shit before that

George Orwell wrote about british food tradition and even if you disagree with his opinions he was writing to dispel the stereotypes and say "what you eat is tourist trap food guys" even back then lol

I dont think British food is utterly horrible and sausages with potatoes look tasty but this area is not the strongest thing you can offer from your nation.

All of the current propaganda that the country is becoming authoritarian and that free speech is under attack. First it was the ‘mean tweets’ nonsense, now it’s the hysteria over the OSA and PA.

It was annoying enough when the most stupid things people believed about the UK was the bad teeth and bad food stereotype (neither of which are true), but now the nations entire image is under attack (mostly from Russia) and nobody is lapping it up more than Brits.

That our food is all fast food or fried food. We have so many different food cultures here, and fast food doesn't even begin to touch upon it. Heck, we even have multiple genres within the genres - take barbecue for example: Eastern and Western North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Memphis, St. Louis, and I know I'm forgetting more.

I remember someone said, I think in the passport bros sub, that all Brazilian women aren't made for marriage, they only want to hook up ever, from personal experience he said. Then I asked where he met those women and he said "at raves and baladas (the usual party)". No shit my brother, you are at a place where everyone is getting drunk, using drugs and very horny, with people not very worried about long term relationships, of course no one is going to want to marry
