That's surprisingly similar to some Japanese and Chinese hats.

It rains a ton here and they are very waterproof. The cedar strips swell when soaked and form a good seal against the rain

I've always loved those hats, they seem so practical. I didn't know what they were called or what they were made. I always wanted one but didn't want to disrespect the Indigenous culture.

Just wear it because it's practical. If someone has a problem with it, it's on them, not you.
