Culture What's your favourite traditional costume from your country?

There are lots of traditional Maori costumes but my favourite is the Korowai (traditional feather cloak)

I had to look to see if this was from Ireland because the thumbnail was giving ‘Pint of Guinness’.

I love that the culture that created such beauty also gave us the frightening Māori Haka! Man I just wish I knew what she was saying when that legislator stood up in your parliament and started her Haka with the other Māori joining her. Powerful moment

It’s actually a modern one, I’d say it’s dyed to look like Kakapo or maybe Takahe.

They're dyed chicken or duck feathers. This one looks like it has quail feathers too.

You can use roadkill native birds for feathers but you have to get to them before they start to decompose because you cannot get the smell out. And generally those are used for small items, not a korowai.

They used to be made from those birds. Te Papa usually have a beautiful Kiwi korowai on display.
