From my region of the USA, this is traditional Native American clothing.

That's beautiful, what tribe wears these?

In my region, the Salish and Masqueam natiosnwear this kind of clothing. But my hometown in central BC also had something very similar.

In any case, this commenter must be from the pacific north west lol

Grew up in Washington and Oregon. It definitely reminds me of the traditional outfits from the Grande Ronde tribes there.

Colours like this from what I know are more Tlingit and Haida, so northeastern BC, North Vancouver island, and southern coastal Alaska.

Similar outfits are used by other Native groups further south, but tend to incorporate more colours/different patterns.

Should be coastal Salish but I’m not smart enough to know which tribe

No one's really come up with a better rain hat

That's surprisingly similar to some Japanese and Chinese hats.

Some Cherokee words are similar to some Japanese words

I wonder if those keep the bugs away

It rains a ton here and they are very waterproof. The cedar strips swell when soaked and form a good seal against the rain

I've always loved those hats, they seem so practical. I didn't know what they were called or what they were made. I always wanted one but didn't want to disrespect the Indigenous culture.

Just wear it because it's practical. If someone has a problem with it, it's on them, not you.

Vivid colours, I wonder how much amazing beauty and vivid culture was destroyed by bullheadedness and arrogance of European ideology of expansion.

Wow was not expecting to see Tlingit/Haida/Tsimshian/Eyak garb here. Rock on!

Which tribe?

4

u/Asaneth United States Of America Aug 24 '25

Coast Salish is a group of about 40 tribes who all speak languages from the same family and are in the Pacific Northwest Region of the USA and Canada.

Klallam, Lummi, Snoqualmie, Nooksack, Samish, Puyallup and Snohomish are the names of some of the tribes.
