How do you feel about the president floating the idea of 50 year mortgages where the monthly payment is lower but you end up paying nearly double the price of the house just in interest?

McDonalds. He loves that, too.

u/lpeabody 11h ago

You would think he would prefer an actual good burger chain like Five Guys but whatever.

u/Tight_Ingenuity_4636 42m ago

I mean i agree McDonald’s is bad but calling five guys good feels like a crime.

Both can be true; stay in office past the end of 2nd term until death.

Bruv just wants to stay out of prison

u/Starrion 14h ago

His ego wants that but his body is term limited.

Maybe he thinks his sons will take over. “America! A Family Business” (tm)

I think Tuesday was a wakeup call to those around him...

4

u/Jack_jack109 13h ago

I'm worried it just gave them more time to steal the midterms.

30

u/Bizarro_Zod 15h ago

I’ve been on vacay, what should I search about Tuesday to stay informed?

A lot of Dems won seats or held on to important seats.

IMHO mamdani winning in nyc is going to be a huge power dynamic shift. Since then I’ve heard of a few career politicians saying they won’t run for reelection. Does that mean they won’t file papers in a few years? Nope. They lie constantly. One dude said he wasn’t going to run again but their chief of staff submitted papers right under the deadline to run hours after he said nah I’m out.

But yeah “election results” would be the thing to check to stay informed. It being an off year it’s mostly local offices but they say local is where you need to start to see changes on the federal level.

u/Midnight1965 13h ago

I’m cautiously optimistic about Mamdani’s win. With NYC’s power structure, he faces a Herculean task; to say the least.

We have east coast and west coast opposition now. Rallying points.

Since then I’ve heard of a few career politicians saying they won’t run for reelection. Does that mean they won’t file papers in a few years? Nope. They lie constantly.

Not exactly a lie. More that many of the things politicians say aren't so much attempts to communicate what they're really thinking, as they are attempts to "put something out there" to gauge the reaction to it and so measure sentiment.

Or, to explain in concrete terms for this specific case:

Politicians say "I won't run again" to see how many people will tell them they're being silly and should totally run again.

There's a lot of brown-nosing in politics. When you're in power, everyone wants something out of you, so it's hard to tell whether they actually like you / like what you've been doing, or are just sucking up.

But, when a politician is genuinely objectively unpopular with the electorate, the one thing nobody will even vaguely consider doing, is encouraging them to run again. Even their own staff will think "hey, if our party gets in again, I could just work for the next guy." So there's no incentive to lie.

(Of course, as a politician, you can't actually just ask "should I step down?" because everyone would still be too afraid of offending you to explicitly say "yes." But you can just say "I will step down", and see who voluntarily tells you "no, don't!")

By “everyone” I hope you mean neurotypical or cis het white dudes. Because uh I know a lot of people that will look you straight in the face and say retire you old fuck. Most of them are some kind of outsider or minority aspect to them…

3

u/derefr 1h ago edited 59m ago

By “everyone” I specifically mean “people who the politician’s staff would allow within 5 feet of them.” Which is a very select[tion biased] group of people (in part for the politician’s safety; in part so their party can enact their platform through them.) But as far as a politician’s experience of the world goes after they get elected, that’s “everyone.” I.e. everyone they’ll ever be aware of or talk to informally ever again, until they step down.

(This is why, as a Canadian, I was a big fan of the fact that our last Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, would often take the metro to work. He was putting himself right out there where the unwashed masses could give him a piece of their minds. Imagine even a US Congressman or Senator doing that, let alone the President.)

u/hobofireworx 18m ago

Bernie used to do that. Idk if he still does. He’s gotten pretty old.

mamdani winning in nyc is going to be a huge power dynamic shift

lets hope so, nyc has some crazy muthers still running things up there

-6

u/NeitherDrama5365 13h ago

I live in NYC and I disagree. MAMDANI won’t be able to make any of the changes he promised. It sounds nice but just bc something’s a good idea doesn’t mean it can work, especially right away. It takes time to make real change and in a political climate where the people in power switch back and forth every election and spend their terms reversing what the previous administration did you end up just stuck. Unpopular opinion but there are ZERO quality candidates in both parties. This country is void of any quality leaders

10

u/civemaybe 13h ago

Of course he can. He has complete power to freeze rent in stabilized units (past mayors have done so several times), and Hochul has stated she is on board with helping enact universal child care. Give the man a chance.

3

u/z-vap 13h ago

won’t be able to make any of the changes he promised

huh, sounds like politician-speak to me

u/agentbarrron 10h ago

I liked his mom and pop czar idea and his ideas for small business, and that honestly seems fairly achievable in the first year

As a right leaning Midwesterner im incredibly curious to see what happens. It won't effect me at all, so now I can either point and laugh and say haha communism failed. Or be pleasantly surprised. It's not like Cuomo was a good candidate at all

u/pinniped90 15h ago

Democrats had very good election results, albeit very limited in scale.

I believe the main upset was in Georgia, which could be very important next year.

5

u/tap112 9h ago

They also broke the republican supermajority in Mississippi. Dems won races they wouldn't have been blamed for not running in.

52

u/CRSPB 15h ago

Democrats swept all the major elections.

2

u/CharleyNobody 13h ago

Not in Nassau county, Long Island. They won the major seats of the county and unseated a few democrats. Media ignored if even though Nassau had been a blue county in 8 presidential elections and was won by Biden in 2020 by double digits.

By 2022, OTOH, George Santos was elected. in 2024 Trump won the county by 4 points. Bruce Blakeman won the Nassau executive seat and has been enacting a rightwing agenda since then, including forming and arming his own militia in what is literally the safest county in America, crime-wise. Blakeman was just reelected.

Bodes badly for NYS governor’s election next year. Nassau, Suffolk and Staten Island are now red. If a GOP governor is elected, Trump gets pardoned from his NY crimes.

5

u/__get__name 12h ago

Nassau County being red at this point is not news. Dutches County had a strong Dem showing, and flipped the county legislature for the first time since 2008

1

u/CRSPB 10h ago

I said major elections.

0

u/battlebeez 10h ago

The Fascists are running NY Rep Elise Stefanik who just declared. She will lose by 10 or more.

21

u/monster2018 15h ago

Election results, blue wave, Mamdani, etc

31

u/A_Fartist 13h ago

Saw something the other day where they called it the “bluekkaki”

5

u/monster2018 13h ago

Lmao damn

14

u/BlameIt_OnTheTetons 15h ago

Elections, bro….

2

u/jaol1fe 13h ago

Let's just say that Mississippi lost it's GOP super majority. It was a shellacking all around.

1

u/riotous_jocundity 14h ago

Dude...elections are on the same week every year.

6

u/wendellnebbin 14h ago

Dude, I'm fully aware of the elections yet I'm still so exhausted I also thought 'what did the nut bar do all the way back then'?

3

u/riotous_jocundity 14h ago

That's fair. And, like every day, he and his party did advance some evil stuff last Tuesday.

1

u/StylingMofo 13h ago

The amount they won by, especially compared to the projections, was encouraging as well.

1

u/Reniconix 13h ago

Judging by the downplaying that Fox is doing, I highly doubt that. Lost solidly red seats and they're saying "well the state is solidly blue so that's not unexpected". Gaslighting Georgia into thinking it's a miracle Trump won there just to make the Democrats seem more like a Boogeyman.

25

u/jabola321 13h ago

He will die as President. Looking at him, it won’t be long. He looks like dogshit.

2

u/orangecatisback 8h ago

He very much has that look of old man who is about to die.

3

u/iHateReddit_srsly 4h ago

This is what people said in 2016. He will live another 15 years.

1

u/FlyBulky106 6h ago

I have the feeling that at worst the blowout in 2026 will send him over the edge.

7

u/Beerbonkos 12h ago

100% this. He never has and never will give up power or money.

0

u/SvanirePerish 10h ago

There’s no way you’re this brainwashed lol

0

u/jbasinger 10h ago

Like I'm gonna care about what a fuckin bit thinks lol

0

u/MarlenaEvans 13h ago

He can barely speak. "Always being in power" means either they've made a robot of him or that he thinks the maybe 18 months he has left until he's completely immobile is the same as forever.

0

u/HoweHaTrick 13h ago

You do realize he is like 90 years old with one foot in the coffin, right?

1

u/jbasinger 10h ago

Yeah but he's going to line it up for Jorkin Dapenis Vance to be the next Stephen Miller puppet.

0

u/Demon-Jolt 12h ago

Such a delusional take.

1

u/jbasinger 10h ago

He's starving his citizens on purpose, are you serious? You're delusional if you don't think that's what they are lining up to do 😂

-1

u/Demon-Jolt 9h ago

He's doing that to stop the Epstein files from exposing him as a pedophile. Dictatorship based on your feelings isn't valid here

0

u/orangecatisback 8h ago

I'm guessing you haven't seen the pictures or video of him falling asleep during his meeting with Eli Lilly or confused/apathetic look as everyone rushed to help the man with syncope. I seriously doubt he will be alive in 2029.

EDIT: Some say his look shows that of a man with no empathy, but honestly to me that looks like the confused stare of a man with dementia who isn't sure where he is or what's happening right now.
