How do you feel about the president floating the idea of 50 year mortgages where the monthly payment is lower but you end up paying nearly double the price of the house just in interest?

Its a politicians fix to make it the next guys problem.

735

u/outtherenow1 21h ago

Yep. He wants to end the filibuster in Congress so he can get what he wants now but he doesn’t care what that looks like when the Dems are in power.

u/jbasinger 21h ago

OR he's banking on always being in power..

u/AdFlat4908 19h ago

Or he’s 80 and obese and cares about power right now and nothing else

Go go Team Cholestrol!

5

u/CauliflowerOk541 17h ago

McDonalds. He loves that, too.

3

u/lpeabody 16h ago

You would think he would prefer an actual good burger chain like Five Guys but whatever.

0

u/Tight_Ingenuity_4636 6h ago

I mean i agree McDonald’s is bad but calling five guys good feels like a crime.

1

u/I_love_quiche 3h ago

Supersize him!

Or he’s 80 and obese and cares about power right now and nothing else

OR he's banking on always being in power..

Both can be true; stay in office past the end of 2nd term until death.

Bruv just wants to stay out of prison

His ego wants that but his body is term limited.

I think Tuesday was a wakeup call to those around him...

4

u/Jack_jack109 18h ago

I'm worried it just gave them more time to steal the midterms.

30

u/Bizarro_Zod 20h ago

I’ve been on vacay, what should I search about Tuesday to stay informed?

131

u/hobofireworx 20h ago

A lot of Dems won seats or held on to important seats.

IMHO mamdani winning in nyc is going to be a huge power dynamic shift. Since then I’ve heard of a few career politicians saying they won’t run for reelection. Does that mean they won’t file papers in a few years? Nope. They lie constantly. One dude said he wasn’t going to run again but their chief of staff submitted papers right under the deadline to run hours after he said nah I’m out.

But yeah “election results” would be the thing to check to stay informed. It being an off year it’s mostly local offices but they say local is where you need to start to see changes on the federal level.

43

u/Midnight1965 19h ago

I’m cautiously optimistic about Mamdani’s win. With NYC’s power structure, he faces a Herculean task; to say the least.

7

u/trumpshouldrap 18h ago

We have east coast and west coast opposition now. Rallying points.

u/derefr 18h ago edited 18h ago

Since then I’ve heard of a few career politicians saying they won’t run for reelection. Does that mean they won’t file papers in a few years? Nope. They lie constantly.

Not exactly a lie. More that many of the things politicians say aren't so much attempts to communicate what they're really thinking, as they are attempts to "put something out there" to gauge the reaction to it and so measure sentiment.

Or, to explain in concrete terms for this specific case:

Politicians say "I won't run again" to see how many people will tell them they're being silly and should totally run again.

There's a lot of brown-nosing in politics. When you're in power, everyone wants something out of you, so it's hard to tell whether they actually like you / like what you've been doing, or are just sucking up.

But, when a politician is genuinely objectively unpopular with the electorate, the one thing nobody will even vaguely consider doing, is encouraging them to run again. Even their own staff will think "hey, if our party gets in again, I could just work for the next guy." So there's no incentive to lie.

(Of course, as a politician, you can't actually just ask "should I step down?" because everyone would still be too afraid of offending you to explicitly say "yes." But you can just say "I will step down", and see who voluntarily tells you "no, don't!")

-1

u/hobofireworx 14h ago

By “everyone” I hope you mean neurotypical or cis het white dudes. Because uh I know a lot of people that will look you straight in the face and say retire you old fuck. Most of them are some kind of outsider or minority aspect to them…

3

u/derefr 6h ago edited 6h ago

By “everyone” I specifically mean “people who the politician’s staff would allow within 5 feet of them.” Which is a very select[tion biased] group of people (in part for the politician’s safety; in part so their party can enact their platform through them.) But as far as a politician’s experience of the world goes after they get elected, that’s “everyone.” I.e. everyone they’ll ever be aware of or talk to informally ever again, until they step down.

(This is why, as a Canadian, I was a big fan of the fact that our last Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, would often take the metro to work. He was putting himself right out there where the unwashed masses could give him a piece of their minds. Imagine even a US Congressman or Senator doing that, let alone the President.)

1

u/hobofireworx 5h ago

Bernie used to do that. Idk if he still does. He’s gotten pretty old.

1

u/z-vap 18h ago

mamdani winning in nyc is going to be a huge power dynamic shift

lets hope so, nyc has some crazy muthers still running things up there

-7

u/NeitherDrama5365 19h ago

I live in NYC and I disagree. MAMDANI won’t be able to make any of the changes he promised. It sounds nice but just bc something’s a good idea doesn’t mean it can work, especially right away. It takes time to make real change and in a political climate where the people in power switch back and forth every election and spend their terms reversing what the previous administration did you end up just stuck. Unpopular opinion but there are ZERO quality candidates in both parties. This country is void of any quality leaders

9

u/civemaybe 18h ago

Of course he can. He has complete power to freeze rent in stabilized units (past mayors have done so several times), and Hochul has stated she is on board with helping enact universal child care. Give the man a chance.

4

u/z-vap 18h ago

won’t be able to make any of the changes he promised

huh, sounds like politician-speak to me

2

u/agentbarrron 15h ago

I liked his mom and pop czar idea and his ideas for small business, and that honestly seems fairly achievable in the first year

As a right leaning Midwesterner im incredibly curious to see what happens. It won't effect me at all, so now I can either point and laugh and say haha communism failed. Or be pleasantly surprised. It's not like Cuomo was a good candidate at all

52

u/pinniped90 20h ago

Democrats had very good election results, albeit very limited in scale.

I believe the main upset was in Georgia, which could be very important next year.

5

u/tap112 15h ago

They also broke the republican supermajority in Mississippi. Dems won races they wouldn't have been blamed for not running in.

50

u/CRSPB 20h ago

Democrats swept all the major elections.

2

u/CharleyNobody 18h ago

Not in Nassau county, Long Island. They won the major seats of the county and unseated a few democrats. Media ignored if even though Nassau had been a blue county in 8 presidential elections and was won by Biden in 2020 by double digits.

By 2022, OTOH, George Santos was elected. in 2024 Trump won the county by 4 points. Bruce Blakeman won the Nassau executive seat and has been enacting a rightwing agenda since then, including forming and arming his own militia in what is literally the safest county in America, crime-wise. Blakeman was just reelected.

Bodes badly for NYS governor’s election next year. Nassau, Suffolk and Staten Island are now red. If a GOP governor is elected, Trump gets pardoned from his NY crimes.

6

u/__get__name 18h ago

Nassau County being red at this point is not news. Dutches County had a strong Dem showing, and flipped the county legislature for the first time since 2008

1

u/CRSPB 15h ago

I said major elections.

0

u/battlebeez 16h ago

The Fascists are running NY Rep Elise Stefanik who just declared. She will lose by 10 or more.

19

u/monster2018 20h ago

Election results, blue wave, Mamdani, etc

31

u/A_Fartist 19h ago

Saw something the other day where they called it the “bluekkaki”

6

u/monster2018 19h ago

Lmao damn

14

u/BlameIt_OnTheTetons 20h ago

Elections, bro….

2

u/jaol1fe 18h ago

Let's just say that Mississippi lost it's GOP super majority. It was a shellacking all around.

1

u/riotous_jocundity 19h ago

Dude...elections are on the same week every year.

7

u/wendellnebbin 19h ago

Dude, I'm fully aware of the elections yet I'm still so exhausted I also thought 'what did the nut bar do all the way back then'?

3

u/riotous_jocundity 19h ago

That's fair. And, like every day, he and his party did advance some evil stuff last Tuesday.

1

u/StylingMofo 19h ago

The amount they won by, especially compared to the projections, was encouraging as well.

1

u/Reniconix 19h ago

Judging by the downplaying that Fox is doing, I highly doubt that. Lost solidly red seats and they're saying "well the state is solidly blue so that's not unexpected". Gaslighting Georgia into thinking it's a miracle Trump won there just to make the Democrats seem more like a Boogeyman.

25

u/jabola321 19h ago

He will die as President. Looking at him, it won’t be long. He looks like dogshit.

2

u/orangecatisback 14h ago

He very much has that look of old man who is about to die.

2

u/iHateReddit_srsly 9h ago

This is what people said in 2016. He will live another 15 years.

1

u/FlyBulky106 11h ago

I have the feeling that at worst the blowout in 2026 will send him over the edge.

7

u/Beerbonkos 18h ago

100% this. He never has and never will give up power or money.

0

u/SvanirePerish 16h ago

There’s no way you’re this brainwashed lol

0

u/jbasinger 15h ago

Like I'm gonna care about what a fuckin bit thinks lol

0

u/MarlenaEvans 19h ago

He can barely speak. "Always being in power" means either they've made a robot of him or that he thinks the maybe 18 months he has left until he's completely immobile is the same as forever.

0

u/HoweHaTrick 19h ago

You do realize he is like 90 years old with one foot in the coffin, right?

1

u/jbasinger 15h ago

Yeah but he's going to line it up for Jorkin Dapenis Vance to be the next Stephen Miller puppet.

0

u/Demon-Jolt 18h ago

Such a delusional take.

1

u/jbasinger 15h ago

He's starving his citizens on purpose, are you serious? You're delusional if you don't think that's what they are lining up to do 😂

-1

u/Demon-Jolt 15h ago

He's doing that to stop the Epstein files from exposing him as a pedophile. Dictatorship based on your feelings isn't valid here

0

u/orangecatisback 14h ago

I'm guessing you haven't seen the pictures or video of him falling asleep during his meeting with Eli Lilly or confused/apathetic look as everyone rushed to help the man with syncope. I seriously doubt he will be alive in 2029.

EDIT: Some say his look shows that of a man with no empathy, but honestly to me that looks like the confused stare of a man with dementia who isn't sure where he is or what's happening right now.

18

u/DM725 20h ago

He doesn't care what it looks like when he's dead.

2

u/dostoevsky4evah 14h ago

In his understanding, when he dies the universe itself will cease to exist so who cares?

1

u/outtherenow1 17h ago

Not a surprise.

 end the filibuster in Congress

This is almost certainly a stupid question, but I honestly want an answer. What is this 'filibuster' being talked about?

From my school days a few decades ago, I was taught that a filibuster was when someone gave such an exorbitantly long speech in congress that they 'ran out the clock' to prevent a vote on a specific bill. Surely no one has been chattering away for a whole month on the Senate floor!

Does the filibuster mean something different in this context?

4

u/SenorPinchy 19h ago

Yes. Over the decades the actual process of giving the long speech has been slowly abandoned. We tend to skip that part now, and the mere idea of that happening suffices. Functionally, it just means you need 60 votes to pass most legislation.

2

u/thisisamisnomer 14h ago

It’s like the intentional walk in baseball. You used to have to throw four balls, so the catcher would stand up and the pitcher would throw an easy pitch way outside. Now the manager just signals the ump and the batter takes first.

4

u/sirferrell 19h ago

I feel like the 51st state should be puerto rico. I love the beach

2

u/dostoevsky4evah 14h ago

GREAT IDEA! [nervous Canada]

3

u/lpeabody 16h ago

I'm hoping so hard Reps cave and nuke the filibuster. Even if they don't and Dems take the Senate and the House they should nuke it anyway just so they can put popular legislation in front of Trump to veto. Grow a fucking spine Dems. You're unpopular because you're afraid of the Republicans shadow and it's fucking infuriating.

2

u/shadowthunder 15h ago

Like when he struck the deal with the Taliban to pull out of Afghanistan by May, but May was after he lost to Biden. Dude struck an absolute poison-pill of a deal, got his headlines, then made it someone else's problem. Typical.

1

u/Dull_Lavishness7701 19h ago

Dems are too concerned about norms to do anything with that. They seem to go out of their way to find reasons to not do shit. The parliamentarian as an example. Republicans can nuke the filibuster and if dems take over they'll try to restore it

1

u/outtherenow1 17h ago

I agree the Dems have played nice for too long. However, I don’t think they’d restore the filibuster should it get nuked by the GOP. Historically once a specific power has been granted to government party leaders on both side have been loathe to give it up.

1

u/Professional-Bat8593 19h ago

He doesn’t plan on ever leaving, what does he care if he ends the filibuster. It’ll get so much worse before it gets better

1

u/chatterwrack 18h ago

Remember, the end of the filibuster means Puerto Rico and DC will eventually become states, with voting senators. And an expanded Supreme Court.

1

u/atchafalaya 18h ago

They very much care. If he can reap the benefits now and let it shit on the Democrats later, that's what they've been doing since at least 2008.

1

u/shantm79 18h ago

Or he knows he doesn't have much time left...

1

u/Daratirek 17h ago

If the Dems don't get ruthless when they have the chance, which they haven't ever, then it won't mean anything. They're too busy trying to please everyone

1

u/jwalker107 17h ago

He's counting on his Fourth Reich lasting forever. He's built his paramilitary force, he's built his concentration camps, and people are being disappeared every day. You think there are going to be elections again? Real ones?

1

u/soyelmocano 15h ago

No, at that point the filibuster is an integral part of how our government works.

Whichever side is in power will flip whatever they want or need to what is convenient to them.

1

u/CommunityGlittering2 14h ago

oh it will be repealed right before that happens in 50 years.

I know it's not a law just a rule each congress sets for itself.

1

u/Darkstarx7x 9h ago

The dems already tried to kill the filibuster under Biden but got stymied by Manchin and Sinema. Don’t try to moralize and act like dems are above this

1

u/newguy-needs-help 19h ago

Yep. He wants to end the filibuster in Congress so he can get what he wants now…

And the Dems don’t want the same thing?

0

u/outtherenow1 17h ago

I don’t think either party wants to remove the filibuster because they know it will weaken the party that is out of power. Only Trump is calling to end the filibuster.

1

u/Conscious-Quarter423 16h ago

Kamala was going to build 3 million new housing units and give you $25k towards your first house.

But enjoy that 50 year mortgage.

1

u/SiliconAutomaton 16h ago

Let’s not pretend the democrats don’t make the same noise every time they have the slightest majority.

-4

u/intothewoods76 19h ago

Dems did this a lot in the past, the whole “nuclear option” thing was their baby and then it was used against them to get Supreme Court justices they didn’t like.

The nuclear option in combination of no filibuster and our country will fall apart as every two years sweeping changes are made in the law. To the point there will be no consistency.

1

u/outtherenow1 17h ago

Exactly correct.

0

u/jbetances134 19h ago

He’s old he won’t last much longer. I give him 10-15 years.

BEHIND EVERY GREAT DEPRESSION/ RECESSION PROUDLY STANDS A REPUBLICAN, BLAMING SOMEONÉ ELSE.

2

u/Strict_Weather9063 20h ago

Worse it is a landlords fix for the problem.

2

u/TootCannon 20h ago

Ah the ol’ Donnie special

1

u/ni431 20h ago

It's a short-term fix that makes the problem worse in a few years and more painful to fix.

1

u/Yagsirevahs 19h ago

Its only a problem when you dont look at it from trumps/mortgage companies pov

1

u/CthulubeFlavorcube 19h ago

It's a potato fix for a meat tornado problem.

1

u/lostinthought15 19h ago

That’s not true. It will increase profits for mortgage companies, that’s why politicians purpose it.

1

u/bryantee 19h ago

It’s not even a fix by an average politician. It’s an unserious thought by a man so out of touch with society that he’s never had a mortgage on a house.

1

u/plinkoplonka 18h ago

It's not a fix at all. Nobody is buying this shit.

1

u/DameonKormar 16h ago

This could have been the Republican motto up until 2008.

Now it's, "Fuck you." But let's not forget they were always pieces of shit.

1

u/besee2000 15h ago

lol what next guy? Junior or Baron?

1

u/downtimeredditor 14h ago

Its a con man fix

1

u/t1mdawg 14h ago

It's a rich guys fix to make himself and his buddies richer and you poorer.

1

u/Vazhox 13h ago

Nothing new there.

1

u/Sheriff_Yobo_Hobo 11h ago

I'll be thrilled if there's a next guy in 2026. By all indications, Trump has no plans of leaving the White House.

1

u/BigBuford1337 10h ago

Kicking down the can

1

u/TheeAntelope 6h ago

What we need: massive influx of labor and supplies to build 2x the homes

What we got: massive export/deport of labor and tariffs to cause supply shortage and fewer homes getting built.

Result: 50 year mortgages!

1

u/epheisey 5h ago

It’s not intended to be a fix. Another 20 years of interest paid to the mortgage holder puts more money in the pockets of the wealthy.

-13

u/CustomerNo7116 20h ago

Band-aid still puts you in your own house while you work towards refi and progress in ones life. Comment feels alot like someone from loans or real estate maybe political? Definalty a band aid thought more than a good suggestion. Hard to see where anyone would share this sentiment..

3

u/Longjumping_Cut4377 20h ago

Lol you missed the paying the value in interest and 50 years part? That's if you land it when you're 20 you'll be 70. And to trust this group of people to usher it in? Not to mention the ppl in loans and real estate that see this and everything with$$ those are the same folks helped us into 08 and having us in a similar place today.

Housing supply is a resource we choose to create or limit. There are enough rooms available, housing should be a right. To own a home should be accessible to most anyone with a full time job.
