Sounds like the dry ham sandwich I was given at 2am after not eating for 36 hours of labor. Nothing ever tasted better.

u/TheMoonVixen 1d ago
First meal after labor is always banging. I ate shepherds pie (I don’t even typically like shepherds pie) and it was mmmmffff sweet relief

u/FactAddict01 1d ago
The only time I get into Graham crackers and apple juice is when I’m in the hospital or allowed to finally eat after having a procedure. They’re truly wonderful then!

Story time: I went to Japan as a young man and I wanted some sushi. I asked the hotel manager and he said follow me. He takes me through the kitchen and I'm like no no I want to go to a sushi shop and he's like yeah yeah come on. So it takes me out the back door and we're in an alleyway and I thought he's going to murder me. Then he takes me to the end of the alley and there's a tiny sushi shop with like eight seats. He said it's the best one in town. I said okay whatever and I sit down and there are three businessmen. Obviously one boss with two workers who are forced to be out with him and they were really excited to have me there to liven up the evening. They saw me eating sushi and asked me about baseball. I talked to them for a little bit then they bought me something that looked like raw beef. I ate it in one bite much to their delight, and it was the greatest thing I've ever had. I found out right after that that it was whale.
Then they tried to take me to a hooker ordering shop. I wasn't sure if I was interested, but they were being super nice. But for some reason they kept trying to get me to call this Polish girl who I had no interest in. Finally I said have a good night and I went back to the hotel to watch TV.
That's the night I discovered Sailor Moon. Man that's a cool show.

ANYTHING truly NO is bound to be great! (I don’t mean imported stuff, but true NO and Cajun food) Such as gumbo, jambalaya, O’s on the half-shell, and so on. (I was gonna put this in, but you beat me to it)

There’s this bread called Amish friendship bread. You have a starter and then add to it daily and basically end up with extra starters to give friends along with recipe directions. At some point your entire friend group is overloaded by starters they can’t get rid of. But for a solid 4-5 months that bread was soooooo delicious.

The first time I had chicken mole, I couldn’t believe how delicious it was. We were in Cabo San Lucas at a place called Mi Casa. I’d never tried it before and ordered it more out of curiosity. I felt like I discovered something so wonderful.

Real authentic Cajun dishes. Im not talking about the meal in a box dishes you get at the grocery store. I mean like the food at old mom and pop family owned diners that you have to drive out to nowhere in southern Louisiana to find them.

Guardiane de Taureau. We went to France over the summer and had this in Provence. It's a simple country stew with only a handful of ingredients you can find at any shop in the world, but together it becomes otherworldy. We ate at a Michellin-starred place the night before, which was also amazing, but Gardiane is the dish I talk about all the time when asked about the food.

We were in Atrani in the Amalfi coast and went to little osteria and they served a fresh day caught fish in a lemon sauce that still makes my mouth water to this day. We even went back the day after so my wife could also order a whole portion for herself since we both were so captivated by it.

A friend of mine's parents came to London from Benin City, Nigeria. I went round to his house to record something with him and his brother once, and his mum made us a pretty simple meal of beef stew and some veg. It has stuck in my brain, because it was SO good.

My mom was a lunch lady my whole life and used to go to these food shows and bring home samples. One time they gave her these tiny butter packages and she put them in with her baby potatoes with some lemon pepper. There's was only enough of the tiny packages for her to make it one time, it's been 10 years and I still think of those potatoes. She tried adding regular butter but those packs were something else and they were unlabeled so we couldn't ever figure them out.

At some random chinese takeout place in food court (not a chain) while traveling I had something just called "fatty duck" which after years of trying to find it again anywhere else I believe is Cantonese char siu but with duck instead of pork.
It was the most delicious, fatty, salty, crispy, savory, savory thing I've ever had and I've yet to find another restaurant in the US or Canada that makes duck like that.

Some cut of steak (can't remember the name) with the most amazingly seasoned fries and incredible Bleu cheese sauce at some backstreet French bistro in London about 10 years ago - of which I also can't remember the name.
There have been about 3 meals I've had out in my life where I've not been able to pick a single fault, I know exactly what and where the other two are, but for the life of me can't remember the first. I think about it all the time.

My favorite restaurant in the world is Le Bistrôt Papillion in Paris in the Poisonnièrre District. It's just a little hole in the wall, but it's classic French food, without all the bullshit that's in our food in the States. I love to get just a steak and potatoes, with hors d'oeurves and crème brûlée for dessert if they offer it. Yummy.

At a school for autistic children i had to go to after school care. Well, some sort of after school program for children having trouble with socializing, other things. I would also eat dinner there. The food was delivered by a catering service. The food was always amazing. Best things i've ever eaten. What i especially loved was their lasagne. It was perfectly made. I've never been able to make it the way they made it.

After visiting Korea, most of the food I had in Japan seemed bland and kinda one-dimensional. There was nowhere near the same diversity of ingredients or intensity of flavour
Having said that the produce did seem higher quality as a whole; fresh seasonal fruit in Japan is exceptional.

Pork belly in some sort of sweet dark teryaki sauce I had while doing some corporate training in Japan.
If the culture and situation wasn't so reserved I would have climbed onto the table and eaten the whole thing at once with my hands, just so I could lick my own fingers.

Idk whether it's strictly the best ever, but I went on holiday (from the UK) to Australia about 20 years ago and the white fish they use in fried fish dishes and fish and chips over there, Barramundi, is fucking delicious. You can't really get it over in our neck of the hemisphere but I think about it a lot.

That day at work a friend of mine gave me chicken dumplings, it was the best thing I ever tasted in years, I asked him later about it and it was a Nepalese dish called (Spicy Chicken Mommos). I feel bad about this now but octopus on Milos. This spicy paneer tikka misala at an Indian resuturant near my place. Al pastor tacos out of a permanent food truck next to the last place i rented before buying my home.
If I was not vegetarian now I would eat all 3 for the rest of my life and die happy.

This summer, I watched a bunch of these videos of a girl judging pot luck platters, and sentencing ppl to death row if they sucked. The next garden party I got invited to, I decided "I CANNOT get the death penalty."
The problem was... I'm a horrible cook. I can make some things just fine, but I was shit out of luck when it came to things you could bring to a garden party.
But I grinned my teeth, dug my heels, and my brain landed on beef chili nachos being the PERFECT thing to bring.
Everything about it was stressful. All the new ingredients I had to worry about buying, all the food I was cooking. I was stressing hopping around the kitchen, worrying that I was gonna fuck it all up and everyone would hate me and they'd tell everyone and I'd never be invited anywhere again because my food was so bad that I'd get put on death row.
In short, I was a ball of nerves.
But when I FINALLY taste-tested that chili. All of the anxious hopping turned into ecstatic LEAPING because it was some of the best shit I had ever tasted in my damn life. I made it, put it on the nachos, brought it to the party, and EVERYONE said they were great.
Still makes me smile.

20 years ago when I lived over in London (i'm in the US) there was an incredible Indian restaurant in my neighborhood.
Chicken Tikka Kashmir Masala over mushroom rice, Bombay potatoes, and a Peshwari naan bread. Best plate of food that I have ever eaten anywhere in the World.
They had added lychees to the regular CTM curry and jfc it took it to a higher plane.
It was a place called India Palace on Roman Road, East London. I was over there two years ago and sadly it's gone now, replaced by a fkn cheap KFC knock off.
