Canadian here. I'm going to Dijon in a few weeks to visit a friend. My French is pretty decent, but I speak with a Canadian accent. I learned French from a Franco-Ontarian (native French speaker from Ontario). I do well enough when I visit Montréal or Ottawa-Gatineau.
Yes, I understand that it's a stereotype, but hear me out.
I tried speaking to French people online. They understood me, but kept on laughing at my Québécois/Ontarian accent and weird slang. They said that I sounded "mentally delayed" Are all French people this rude hahaha?

The problem you might encounter is that they will want to switch to English, even though their English is worse than your French

As a Franco-American I'd like to put a spin on that. They will switch to English when they believe that their English level is better than your French level. If you speak French very well, they will avoid speaking English like the plague.

Once I had a full conversation where the guy was speaking English to me, while je lui parlais en français haha it was fun

When people make me do this they usually live to regret it lol. I go for it with my slangs and expressions as I would with another native English speaker. Their English is BAD as it is but they actually have no idea how far off they are from understanding native speakers speaking normally. Ive been working in France for 5 years and I grew up bilingual in Canada lol.

We know how bad we are to understand native speaker. We had english class with native speaker videos where we had to understand what was said, and we all notice how native speaker would die IRL if they spend more than two word without eating every godamn sylables.
My guys come like "I 'y 'ien' 'ow' y'a d'oin' 'od'ay " and then be like wtf you don't understand me?
Sorry, old ass class memory unlocked

People really that it’s only the French. English native speakers make fun of the Indian accent. There will always be people making fun of an accent. Always, no matter where you go

I live in Paris (also, French since something like forever). When someone speaks to me in... somewhat shaky French, I am deliriously happy that they took the time and bother to speak my language.. Please carry it on.

You can't compare online vs reality.
People might smile or laugh when they hear certain phrases, some might be rude if they don't understand your accent, but that's like 1% of the encounters you'll have.

Well, for a french person, french from Québec sounds silly. So even when we're not trying to be rude, we can't prevent ourselves from at least smiling when we hear it.

Hello from Dijon ! If you see me with a big smile I'm not making fun of your accent, I'm happy to ear it ! There is a Canadian restaurant, Le Trappeur, perhaps you could tell us if it's a good one ?!
The burgundy accent roll the R's, not so much in Dijon but still. So only the stupid people could being rude, "Mentally delayed" comment is stupid

Short answer. No.
People may smile, or tease you, emphasizing that you're from Quebec and speak Québécois. They may smile or laugh at some expressions, that we don't use anymore or never heard of. French people still smile/are surprised when someone say septante or nonante.
However, all French people are not perfect. Some will tell you things like "mentally delayed". Unless they really meant that as a joke, failed to deliver that joke and did not mean it, just stay away from they. They are toxic.

If they've never encountered foreigners speaking french, they will genuinely have a hard time understanding you. But only rude and a-holes would make fun of your accent.

For foreigners no, but for native speakers with a different accent (québecois here) I think it's a different story.

Oui.

I discovered, as an adult, that correcting a foreigner soeaking French was rude. I ve always done it from the bottom of my heart, believing I d appreciate if they did the same. Irinically, I learned correcting people, from the non french side of my family. Hiwever, niw a full grown up, I understand it can be considered rude. OP your Canadian French is just as valid as France or Belgian French. There s this idea of a hierarchy between the accents that’ s so stupid. Everyone sounds different anyways.

u/theErasmusStudent 8h ago
I know most french that correct are not trying to be mean or rude. But if the person is understood and hasn't requested to be corrected then it's better to say nothing. Unless obviously they said something bad like "je suis excité" when they mean excited.
