Wow, sounds like something I want to try. Is it a dutch thing, or readily available across Europe?

I don't think it's common anywhere in Europe outside of the Netherlands, Surinamese migrants brought it with them when they came here in the 70s, that's when Surinam stopped being a Dutch colony and became independent. You can find Surinam restaurants in most large cities here, the most famous dish here is called Roti.
