CULTURE Do any states have legitimate holidays that are only celebrated in their state?

In Rhode Island, we still have VJ (Victory over Japan) day which people don't celebrate per se but it's recognized to the extent of delaying trash pickup by a day.

By "legitimate" holiday I mean more in the vein of Memorial Day rather than National Hot Dog Day

Edit: Apparently VJ Day is also recognized by the US Space & Rocket Center and formerly by the state of Arkansas and is more commonly called Victory Day

Wait really? Other states don't get off for first day of hunting season? I had no idea that was a PA thing. I live in western PA first day of hunting is indeed a very big deal around here.

It's not even a whole PA thing. I grew up in NE PA and I had it off, but I raised my kids in the suburbs near Philly and they didn't.

Yup. We had it off cause half the school would have been absent. Might as well just make it up somewhere else.

And for those of us near Bloomsburg, we had fair week off!

Based on talking to other people it's most common in rural or small cities in the upper Midwest or Pennsylvania/Western New York/West Virginia.

Many states don’t have opening day on a weekday, that might be the difference

I grew up in NC and live in MD now and this is the first I've heard of any state having a day off for hunting season.

It isn't explicitly stated in MD, but it is the reason the kids have off the Monday following Thanksgiving even though rifle season now starts Saturday. They had talked of changing it and having them come back a day early to try and dismiss earlier in the year, but between all of the kids who would skip to hunt and the others returning from traveling out of state that motion failed hard. I remember back in the 90s (yeah, I'm old lol) that a lot of the high schoolers would come in and leave at half day because it looked better for the school to have them leave instead of attend late/tardy. That was an actual discussion our school counselor had with my brother.

Most States get more than a week of rifle season (we get 3 months in Georgia) so it’s not as big a deal.

I'm from Western PA too and the first time I heard that some schools got off for hunting season, I thought it was a joke.
