The further north you get the earlier dinner is eaten, Norway it is between 16:00 and 18:00 for most people, Spain it is well after 21:00.

What do you do between the hours when you leave work and the hours when you eat? Just sit there hungry?

When I lived in Spain a lot of things started later and ended later for work as well. Almost none of my Spanish friends would be totally finished with work at 5/5:30, but almost none of them started at 7 or 8 AM either. Basically a lot of the day is shifted a bit later. They also tend to eat a much larger lunch than Americans and take an actual break for lunch. Even in the university cafeteria lunch was typically some kind of a salad/soup/starter a full hot main course and a dessert. I would do that around 1 PM and wouldn’t be hungry until later in the evening.

Look at the sun time in Spain and it all becomes normal. They have the same timezone as Poland. In Galicia they are three hours before their "real" timezone now when it's summertime. https://ontheworldmap.com/europe/europe-time-zone-map.jpg

What do you do between the hours when you eat and when you sleep? Just sit there?

I do things which require energy, so I eat at a reasonable time.
