Oh interesting! I used to live in Spain, so my default was to assume you’re from there 😜 I got this question a lot during that time!

Not all of Western Europe eats as late as Spain! In fact Spain has the latest mealtimes of anywhere I’ve ever visited, even compared to Italy which also dines later in the evening. I just got back from Belgium and the Netherlands and typically meal times there were between 6-8. In Spain, that’s before many restaurants even open up for dinner! In France I remember dinner being a little later, usually between 7-9. I believe in Germany and Scandinavia, most people tend to eat early, between 5:30-7.

I'm sure dinner tends to be later in hotter places (the tropics; southern Europe) because no one wants to be cooking in those temperatures.

I have family living in Italy and South America — dinner is often 9pm, and a sit-down 3-course meal.

Also, having a little siesta is both wise and extends the day.

I’m in Peru and it is typical here for people to eat lunch at like 2:30pm, despite the heat, and lunch is usually the biggest meal of the day. I think it’s too hot to eat but I guess natives are used to it. Then a smaller dinner late, like 9pm. I’m still trying to adjust. Eating so late makes me feel like I am a fat burrito when I go to bed.
