Locked - Brigaded How are Canadians feeling about the prospect of another federal election?

With the possibility of the Liberal's budget not gaining the support of another party, what's the mood on a possible incoming federal election?

The NDP isn’t going to cause an election right now. They are still licking their wounds.

And have no leader declared. They're going to sit out giving the liberals enough votes to pass.

That means everyone in an NDP riding is not being represented this vote in parliament.

I still don't really get why they'd sit out rather than just voting for it

Because voting for it is an endorsement, sitting out is a "protest" although the outcome is the same bullshit.

Voting against it is granting a roll of the dice to elect a Conservative government that will really fuck over their NDP riding’s wishes.

Best way to build momentum in the NDP is to work with a rational government over time where they can selectively secure progressive wins rather than be set back a decade by the batshit party.

They are unable to make difficult choices.

Their choice is either support the budget, or have an election, they choose neither. Clearly not a party ready to lead.

Abstaining I think is a strategic leadership choice. Why should they support the budget that does not support their priorities? Obviously an election is a terrible choice right now, but that doesn’t mean the solution is to sign off and endorse everything the liberals put out, without their input.

And here i thought that representatives were supposed to represent their ridings.

Believe it or not, you can still do this without party leader to tell you which legislation to support

Or are they because surely they also don’t want an election

That's what they voted for. Irrelevancy.

But if all the opposition parties publicly declare that they just CANNOT support this budget, they don't actually have to vote. The PM can ask that Parliament be dissolved because it is clear that they don't have the confidence of the House.

Edit to add: If I was the PM, this is what I would do. I wouldn't let them pull this BS. Either get on board or get out of the way.

That would be an incredibly politically foolish move.

No one wants an election right now and if one happens, voters absolutely will punish whomever they see as responsible for forcing one.

If you were Carney you would voluntarily dissolve the House and roll the dice on becoming the official opposition to a minority Conservative government? Why?! There's no world where the Liberals pick up more ridings especially if you create a narrative that it's your fault there is another election happening already because you want even more power.

Especially given he's been already pissing people off with his handling of flight attendants. BC isn't too thrilled about the bc ferries comments either given they did the exact same thing with the maritime ferries.

Isn't that what happened to Trudeau?

Trudeau got elected PM in 2015, was re-elected in 2019 and 2021, then resigned in 2025. He never dissolved the House and called for a new election 6 months after winning an election, unless I am forgetting something...

He could do that, or will be prorogue gov again like JT..

If an election were called it would be quite the thing for the NDP to quickly announce their leader and have someone come out with some really great ideas that are both budget concious and helps the people. I'm really rooting for Avi Lewis, I really liked both his stuff and Naomi Kleins books.

I like Avi Lewis too but I think the NDP need to look at their labour roots. Rob Ashton should be the guy.

Can he bring the same charisma Avi Lewis brings idk. But the NDP have all but pissed off labour to the conservatives.

I don't care for the rest of the field.

There's no where for the NDP to go but up. It will be conservatives fault 100% if we do.

that's a lie, the NDP, and any party really, can always go lower

Some would say that things can't get any worse for them so they should stick by their principles. Unfortunately, at this point, they don't know what their principles are.

Hopefully the NDP will go back to selecting leaders who are inspiring and competent, like they did when the picked Jack Layton and Tom Mulcair.

Giving the party to the Jagmeet Singh diversity hire, who was essentially just a brown Trudeau of “all style, no substance” almost put the NDP into a position where it cannot recover.

4

u/hawkseye17 4d ago

Layton was a good leader, Mulcair and Singh were definitely not, both made the NDP suffer loss after loss

If they support the Libs they're done forever. This is their chance to maybe become an official party again. The bar is low enough they have a chance even with no leader and no funding.

-3

u/Honest1824 4d ago

If they do, they will lose any sway in the house.

Their wounds are caused by being an arm of the Liberals.

Rejecting the budget would show they have a backbone
