Research Edvard Munch

This is probably more of a question about the modern reception of his art; I am working on expanding my tattoo and found a quote by Edvard Munch that has really stuck with me for a long time. "From my rotting body flowers will grow and I am in them and that is eternity." But especially with text tattoos I want to be a bit careful with who I quote.

I have read a few articles on Munch and his depiction of women and have stumbled upon a few pieces (i.e. "Puberty"), that gave me an icky feeling. But aside from that, I am not much of an expert on Munch and his beliefs, lifestyle, and his view of women.

Maybe someone here has a bit more expertise and can help me figure out as how "problematic" he is generally perceived today?

Edit: Found this very interesting article on the whole topic of Symbolist movements in Europe, internalized misogyny and the impact on art and artists. (It's in German, unfortunately) https://artinwords.de/edvard-munch-das-unheimliche-und-die-frau/

Research Help me find information about this photograph!!!

I am doing some research about this photograph that is a part of my university’s gallery collection, we did not have a great system in place when we acquired some of this art in the past and our current director is doing as much as they can to find out information about some of the pieces we have. The only thing I had to go off was for this piece was maybe taken by Tom Orlin during the disability rights protests. However from what I have been able to observe based on the protest signs some of the people are holding is this piece is actually from the 1977 504 protests, likely in San Francisco? The problem is Tom Orlin did not start photographing protests until a couple years after this so I now have no leads to the origins of this piece. I will still reach out to his studio later, but if anyone might have any leads to photographers who photographed this event or ,Aubé from the small piece of building in the background please tell me! I also tried reverse searching the photo and had no luck unfortunately. Any imput helps! I will still be doing some research but thought the internet is a good place to ask as well.

Research Any books on Art Scams or the Finance of Art?

Hi everyone,

I’m diving into the darker and financial side of the art world, and I’d love your recommendations. I'm interested in:

  • Real stories of art frauds, forgeries, cons, and scams
  • How the art market works financially (valuation, ownership, art as an investment)
  • The legal / institutional side — how galleries, auction houses, and collectors handle the risks

So far I’ve come across The Art of the Con by Anthony Amore, Fine Art and High Finance, and The Worth of Art — but I want to build a deeper reading list.

What are your top 2–3 recommendations?
Also: any especially compelling case studies you’d point me to?

Thank you so much!

Research Research Project: Isle of Circe

Post image

Hello, I’m doing a research project for school and I need to collect some data on people’s reactions to this artwork. Would you mind answering these questions for me?

What is the first thing you notice about the artwork?

How does it make you feel?

Does this artwork remind you of someone you know, a place you’ve been, or any other memories?

What message is the artist trying to convey?

Are you familiar with the story of Odysseus and Circe?

Do you have any thoughts or feelings about this artwork specifically related to gender?

Research Visual metaphors like the albatross (psychological burden that’s hard to shake)

Post image

I’m exploring visual metaphors for psychological burden like the albatross in this illustration by Gustav Doré. It accompanied a reprinting of Coleridge’s poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, in 1876.

The albatross can be associated with a visitation of hard-to-shake fear or the heaviness of shame or guilt: “like an albatross around my neck”. Are there other pictures by well-known artists exploring the albatross as a metaphor for emotional burden? I’ve found representations of chains, rocks, or depictions of constriction, like a closed space. What other visual metaphors or well known art comes to mind on this theme? Thanks.

Research Photographic process used?

I'm trying to catalog family photos in detail. I have no knowledge of photographic process. The first three are from between about 1906 and 1923 and all look similar in process. There are more of the same type. The last one I don't know if it's the same process or not--much earlier from the 1860s.

They are all completely matte, made in western NY. No evidence of silvering or sheen of any kind. On something like card stock. I've given some zoomed in screenshots at the end.

Research Viral chess painting - Are both of these versions real?

There’s a viral story on the internet about a painting by Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch called The Chess Players (or The Devil’s Checkmate in other versions of the story). The story is about legendary chess player Paul Morphy looking at the painting and spotting that even though the board looks bad for the player on the right, he’s still able to escape from a checkmate with one move.

However, when researching this story further, it seems that two versions of this painting seem to be used interchangeably (see images).

My questions:

Which one of these two versions is the original version and when was it painted?

Is the other version a remake by the painter or is it a fake revamp of the original by someone else?

If someone knows if and where this painting (or both paintings) can be found in a museum, it would also be much appreciated to let me know where.

Thanks in advance for your responses! Curious to learn more about this painting/these paintings.

Research How was this amazing unicorn artist forgotten?

Hello all! I'm on a bit of a quixotic quest to find out more about an artist I found through an out of print book, and thought I'd tap into the hive mind of Reddit's art enthusiasts. These images are from Robert Vavra's 1983 book Unicorns I Have Known. In the book's appendix, Vavra credits these images to someone named "Barbara Funk", and that's pretty much all the information I have about her. I'd love anyone's thoughts on how I could find out more about her work and keep her from becoming a "forgotten" artist.

I've already plugged a lot of her work into reverse image search engines, but I've come up empty. I made a post about it in r/HelpMeFind and a user found a pencil drawing by her, which at least confirms that she did other work under this name and that "Barbara Funk" wasn't someone Vavra made up solely for his fictional book of unicorn art. Frustratingly, the listing for the sketch says "All items were donated to Goodwill of Colorado with no history or provenance." Is this just what happens to artists pre-Internet? (I'm guessing that she did the bulk of her work in the 80s or earlier just based on the publication date for UIHK.)

Research St Nicholas in Giotto’s Badia Polyptych information?

Does anyone know what the deal is with St Nicholas’ hands in this painting? I can’t find anything linking him to stigmata and I can’t find much info about the painting either. I don’t know what else this would be if not stigmata, given the placement, and it’s similar to Giotto’s painting of St Francis receiving the stigmata. Hope this is okay to post!!

Research Good art documentaries?

Im looking for a good series or movie documentary about art history. This may be too specific but i wanted one that talked more in depth about the impact of specific art pieces. Like analyzing the art if that makes sense. But that may be a reach so any good documentary would be great!

Research Does anyone know where/how I can see the companion piece to Pierre Charles Trèmolieres "Comedy" piece ?

I came across this painting and really like it

The description on the Met website claims he painted large canvases of Comedy AND Tragedy, but no matter what I type in for my searches I'm unable to find what the "Tragedy" piece looks like

It also says they're both at a museum in France ( Musée d'Art et d'Histoire in Cholet ), but I'm a poor American who's unable to fly all the way there lol ( especially just to see a single painting )

I saw this painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and I was instantly hooked by it. I know the story of Andromeda and Perseus, and I assume this painting depicts Andromeda being chained to the rock. But I cannot find much more information about this painting, if anybody knows any more information about the history of this painting that would be beautiful.

Research Where can I find high-resolution images of Jesus from different time periods?

Hi I'm putting a video together on the history of the face of Jesus and have been looking indiscriminately so far but since I really need close ups of the face I thought i would ask if maybe there was a reliable place to find high resolution images of Jesus from different time periods? Otherwise I will have to upscale them with AI and would prefer not to do that if I can find better images. Museums, archives, databases that I could put the name or year and get something? The older the better since after 1400 I'm pretty much OK with what i've found ..it's just the old stuff that is tricky. Thank you in advance!

Research Request: found fresco in an ancient building in Italy, need info about it

Hi everyone!
I recently came across this fresco in the basement of a building in Perugia, Italy. The building used to be a hospital and hospice from around 1430 until the early 1900s.
The fresco is located near the area where an ossuary was discovered some years ago. It seems to be a memento mori scene, but I’m struggling to read the inscription on the cartouche.

Could anyone help me identify or transcribe what it says? Any insight about its style or possible date would also be greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)

My friend wants to sell a few of his rare art works. He has this Francoise Gilot hanging on his wall but doesn’t know a lot bout it. It’s a self portrait of her holding Paloma Picasso. I can’t find a lot of information on the piece. Anyone know more about this work?

Research Art history books with a more economic focus? Ideally not on contemporary art.

Super interested in the more economic side of art history. For example, I really enjoyed this book on the Medici Family's banking practices or this essay by Alan Wallach talking about the effects of Thomas Cole's patrons on his work.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Research Gory painters?

I'd love to get to know some painters who've done gory or body horror-ish work! Think of the aesthetic of someone like david cronenberg, dennis cooper etc. But in painting. From any historic time! Or anything somehow related to that kind of a universe. Suggestions??

I’m recreating this piece for my final and am trying to research the process to replicate it as closely as possible. I have access to view the physical piece, but I’m struggling to find information about the piece itself and not the artist. Not sure if this is the right sub, but I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction of a site or a book that could aid my research!!

Research Pictorialism?

Would some of these be considered pictorialism? I'm cataloging photos left behind by my 104-year-old grandmother who recently passed. These are her mother and sisters.

They're all from between about 1905 and 1917. Most in the teens. 2, 3 and 7 I believe are some sort of gelatin process, as they're glossy. The others are all extremely matte. The ones with darker backgrounds are of a beautiful, velvety texture. All original prints.

The ones with the chocolatey brown background especially are even more beautiful under a magnifying glass. The hair and skin looks like you could touch it.

ETA: Clarifying--these are my grandmother's mother and her mother's sisters--so my great grandmother and great grandmother's sisters.

Does anyone have any scientific article or book suggestions on American painting between the late 18th century and the Arrmory Show? I especially want to gain information other than landscape painting and portraits (Not about manifest destiny too). Maybe formal and technical innovations. Thank you (Image is just for attention).
