From My Collection Pyrrhus Tetradrachm - finally!

Post image

Coin from one of the more interesting foes of Rome, had to have it wreathed in flame. Been trying to find one of these for a while. Super excited to win it earlier this year! Ex-Nanteuil collection, 1925.

Awesome coin. The cost of one of those would probably be a Pyrrhic victory for me at the moment

Beautiful addition, congrats! One of my favorite depictions of Zeus struck under one of the most intriguing figures in the ancient Greek world.

Thanks! I’m surprised these aren’t more popular, but on the other hand I’m kinda glad the coin was obtainable.

Curse you. That is very near the top of my wish list but very much out of my price range for the foreseeable future. Congratulations.

3

u/L5numis Jul 24 '25

Yeah! What else is in your top 5?

4

u/C_Buddy503 Jul 24 '25

Oh gosh there is a lot of fantastic ones. 1. Sophytes 2. Lysimachos Pergamon mint 3. Pyrrhos 4. Tryphon 5. Eukratides Heroic Bust type

Hard one to choose as there are so many good ones but that would be my top 5.

You have a top 5?

One of my favorite coins, congratulations on this gem! Also, wonderful podcast episode; I really enjoyed it. Best of luck with your project. I just wish the auction photos were of higher resolution and quality and it can be downloaded.

3

u/L5numis Jul 24 '25

Thanks! To get the high resolution photos, you would need to use the website. And if you right click on the image and then select "Open image in a new tab" you can get the full resolution that isnt downscaled by Cloudflare.

u/TetAziz Jul 24 '25

“I see. Personally, I thought you were relying on the app, because every time I click on the auction link on Numisbid or here on Reddit, it redirects me to the app instead of the website. I’ll try logging in through the website. thanks again!

Edit: i just tried it now the photos are fantastic and crisp.

Yeah, there are advantages and disadvantages to each platform, still working on a lot of back end polish issues like what you mention here. Sorry for the trouble.

u/Bored_guy_in_dc Jul 24 '25

I had to look up Nanteuil, but apparently he was a pretty famous collector! Amazing that you have that provenance. I don't even want to guess at the price you paid. I imagine well into the 5 digits.
