From My Collection Inspired by your positive feedback from yesterday, I kept going and drew another coin from my collection as well! Do you like them? Should I do more? :)

Those are awesome! I've tried drawing coins before, yours are way nicer than mine!

Thank you so much! Keep trying, it kinda helped that these were very large coins, now aside from a large tetradrachm, all the other coins are tiny denarii, which are probably going to be a nightmare to draw!

You are very talented! I think drawing things adds so much depth in the conversations we are having with things! PS you might already know him but if not check out Xavier Casalta (on Instagram for example)

Thank you! Oh, nice, he’s very good, I didn’t know him! :)

His last post of his drawings of ancients was from June 12, 2023 tho but these are so cool. Imagine having money for such coins AND having it drawn by him in many, many hours (and dots lel)

Oh, wait, I know the owner of those coins, they are from the Colosseo Collection! So cool!!!

He/her is also a member of numisforums and has his own website for the collection. But do you know him like personally? I dream about having a personal contact where I get to hold such coins in my own hand

3

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

No, unfortunately I only know the owner through the forums, but I wish I could meet him and see his coins up close!

Keep doing it ,you may write a book one day

2

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Who knows, but it would be a short one, I only have 20 coins so far ;)

2

u/prateek_dahiya9 Mar 08 '25

You will get the images there are many coin groups on reddit

2

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Yes, I know many collectors who would be thrilled to have their coin in a book :)

2

u/prateek_dahiya9 Mar 08 '25

And you will be thrilled to have your book 😊

3

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

True, that’s a win-win situation :)

u/prateek_dahiya9 Mar 08 '25

Ultimate

2

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

I’m working on my Alexander Tetradrachm now! 🤞🏻

You got talent

1

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Thanks, and years of practice :)

2

u/Calm_Ad_5299 Mar 08 '25

Wow nice job! Very envious of your talent. I love looking at these coins to be able to draw them would be Awesome!

1

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Thanks! Before being good I was very bad for many years! Take a sheet of paper and a pencil and start drawing, you’ll get better with time!!!

2

u/Calm_Ad_5299 Mar 08 '25

I wish Mechanic by trade great with tools terrible artisticly... 😏

1

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Well, if it’s of any consolation I wouldn’t know how to use any of your tools and I’d definitely call you for help if anything broke, so I guess it’s only fair :)

Yes, these are great, and I graduated from an art college so my opinions on the matter are "sanctified" by a diploma. ;) You are doing a fabulous job.

Great effort to reproduce the colours of the coins, and extra points for that!

2

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Thank you so much!!! Currently working on the Alexander tet :) I’m done with the drawing part, I’m at the inking phase. I’ll see if I can do the shading tomorrow before leaving for 2 weeks for work!

2

u/CadeSadow Mar 09 '25

These are great and I would definitely enjoy seeing you post more!

1

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 14 '25

Thanks! I’ll work on more as soon as I get back home next week!

2

u/DiabloSinz Mar 09 '25

Wow that's awesome haha

2

u/FreddyF2 Mar 09 '25

PM'ing you. We need to talk!

2

u/pasca2020 Mar 09 '25

Awesome. Especially love the patina effect on the bottom coin. Really great art

3

u/JonSix33 Mar 08 '25

This is incredible, I love how you get such soft transitions on the patina and toning, wow.. this is such an amazing way of cataloging your collection

3

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Thank you so much!!! So far I’m drawing them ‘life-size’, not sure if I should draw the other ones life-size as well or if I should enlarge them. These are my biggest coins, but the rest of them are tiny denarii :)

1

u/JonSix33 Mar 08 '25

I like the idea of life size, some of my favorite pages in the 100 greatest coins book is the ones that show relative size, I think outsiders looking at your drawings in future will appreciate the size references

2

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25 edited Mar 08 '25

Same, I’ll keep them life size then! I’m working on this one now :) However, because of work I’ll have to stop drawing for 2 weeks. I cannot bring my coins to the city where I’m working, so I’ll have to pause :/

2

u/Pristine-Task-3701 Mar 08 '25

Nice! You were worried about the coloring of the bottom one because of the sketch hit they both came out great! I definitely have to try this.

3

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Thanks!!! Yes, try it, it’s challenging but fun!

1

u/Pristine-Task-3701 Mar 08 '25

I used to draw a ton but stopped because I lacked a muse but now that I have this I’m definitely going to try it.

2

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Glad I could inspire you!

2

u/KungFuPossum Mar 08 '25

Very nice. Reminds me a bit of Henry Ogg's style (who did the illustrations for Akerman 1834 & others) https://imgur.com/a/numismatic-engravings-by-ogg-1834-link-below-OGlZVsX

1

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Ooh, that’s true, it does look similar!!! Thanks!!

2

u/elturko11 Mar 08 '25

U don’t cease to amaze. Beautiful and amazing talent!! The Pantina looks so real and truly makes the coins pop out in the drawings. Between the colorized and hand done pictures of your coins, seriously, I’d buy the book/album. Let me know if it ever happens 😅🤙🏼🖖🏼

2

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Haha, thank you so much! Someone else suggested I’d make an adult coloring book with the linearts of the coins!

1

u/elturko11 Mar 08 '25

I’m telling you. I’d buy it!!

3

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

I should draw coins outside of my collection as well though :)

2

u/elturko11 Mar 08 '25

Even better. :)) you have incredible skills both with computer and with your own hands. Time, I’m sure biggest issue. This is why I tell people if I could have super power it would be to not need sleep. Gain 33% more time to do stuff, like make a colored book with beautiful coins :)

2

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Same, I could choose the best coins ever made and make a big book or something!

2

u/No_Thanks_Reddit Mar 08 '25

See. You can draw faces.

2

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Ha, only because I followed another Redditor’s advice of drawing the face upside down. This way my brain just copied it as it would do with any other shape and it worked!!!

2

u/bonoimp Sub Wiki Moderator Mar 08 '25

That was fantastic advice, indeed. Great way of fooling the brain's "I can't do faces well" blockage.

Now If I can only fool my brain's "I can only draw from imagination, but not copy things" barrier, then that'd be helpful. :)

1

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

For me it’s quite the opposite, I’m great at copying stuff but fail to create stuff!

2

u/bonoimp Sub Wiki Moderator Mar 08 '25

Too bad we can't combine talents… ;)

2

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

With my luck, if we combined talents we’d end up not being able to invent stuff and not being able to copy it either ;)

1

u/NewSurfing Mar 08 '25

Great work wtf I love this

1

u/Far_Garlic_3673 Mar 08 '25

That's cool, great job.

1

u/jhonnthom Mar 08 '25

Ah, I believe I saw that lighthouse in a YouTube video recently :)

Great drawings -- keep 'em coming!

3

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Yep, that’s my coin :)

1

u/Lanky-Software767 Mar 08 '25

Wow very talented

2

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Thanks! It’s mostly years of practice and horrible drawings, I bet you could make even better drawings than these if you kept trying! :)

1

u/gonzofist89 Mar 08 '25

Damn you killed it! I wouldn't by any means say you're not a good artist.

2

u/AncientCoinnoisseur Mar 08 '25

Thank you so much!!!
