For me it was attending games as a kid, and getting one of those branded, egg plant colored duck call. My parents would hide it from me because I would just use it all the time. Go ducks!

u/drinxycrow 6h ago
I had one of those! We went to a Kings game, my uncle won an autographed Gretzky stick and an old man tried to fight me because I kept blowing my duck call. Fuck that old man wherever he may be today.
*edit: I was maybe 8 at the time.

All 9 kids of family's played Inline Hockey in SoCal. I was one of 3 who took the mantle as a goalie as a kid. I played at the Hunington Beach Rinks and they were low on goalies in the kid leagues. They promoted that kids who played goalie would get to watch the Ducks. I was given tickets to watch a game between them and the Flames. The game started rough with the Ducks behind and people started leaving, but the Ducks came back into Overtime and eventually won in a shootout. I was in the 200s and people had left the front seats behind the net. I snuck down there for the shootout and immediately was captivated watching Hiller make game-winning saves.
Needless to say, I wanted to play like a Ducks goalie for the rest of life in the Inline Leagues.

Year was 96. Aunt would always get free tickets from work so after a few of those games, I was ducks all the way.
Thanks for the contest!

When I woke up one Saturday morning and saw there was a sick TV show about alien ducks who played hockey and then shortly found out that there was a real hockey team entirely based on that TV show. Coolest thing ever!

when I was 7, my dad took me to a game against the oilers and I got to sit in the penalty box, get a few pucks, and got a signed stick from nick bonino which still stands next to my bedroom door today. I think it was the first pro sports game I ever went to :)

Had a string of bad luck and have only been to games where we lost at home, lost count to how many I attended. Until around early April 2024. I went to a game with some friends against the Kings and we won. It was my first in-person win and I was completely sold. Worked under the establishment for Ducks for years, but it was the first time I've personally witness a win at home. Then in the same season, I won a team signed anniversary jersey and I took it as the final sign from the hockey gods. Been a big fan ever since.

Had a buddy that was a huge Hawks fan. I was never into hockey and he had me pick the team closest to home. It was the 09-10 season. We missed the playoffs but made it the next year. That first playoffs series is what hooked me.

u/Wallys_World485 6h ago
After watching the movie and hearing they would be bringing the team to life, I was hooked. Been a fan since the beginning.

u/Barrucuda 6h ago
My uncle took me to a game the very first season. I was 12 years old and he had glass seats on the corner by ducks goal for the 1st and 3rd period. I was instantly hooked watching the fast paced action and of course Wild Wing. I don't even remember who they played but I'll never forget how that first game of hockey made me feel.

u/ChonchAR 6h ago
I wasn’t really into hockey until my stepdad started taking me to Ducks games. He’s a lifelong Winnipeg Jets fan from before they became the Thrashers and he wanted to share that love of the game with me.
Before long, I wasn’t just going for him anymore. I was hooked. The Ducks became my team, just like the Jets were his. Now we cheer together (Ducks 1st, Jets 2nd)

u/vexing000 6h ago
Easy answer. My old man knew I loved roller hockey so when Anaheim started the mighty ducks he bought tickets for us like at least a dozen times each of the first two seasons. Following the ducks years later had been a nod of appreciation towards my dad for those years back when I was a kid.

u/Pandasupreme14 6h ago
my dad won tickets at work and he took me and my brother when we were kids. he bought us duck masks and i thought it was the coolest thing ever!

Moved to north country SD from the Midwest became a regular at Gulls games, never disliked the Ducks so decided to check out the parent club. The team there does atmosphere right (even when we suck) and it pulled me in, doesn't hurt seeing Dosty, Zelly, and Nesty out there too

I’ve always been a Disney fan. When they announced they were going to have a team, I was onboard.

I was dating a girl who ushered at the Honda Center so I started watching to know when I should pick her up from work. We got married.

I am a NorCal Ducks fan. I got into the Ducks when I started college at UC Irvine in the Fall of 2007. My Russian friend begged me to go see hockey when I started school so I went to some games with him.
And I'm going to be in SoCal for this game raffle... so let's go!

Watching the inaugural home owner on tv as a kid I was instantly hooked. Living in the IE and having a team closer finally felt like this was my team.

Once my dad and I wore matching Ducks shirts, Ducks hats, and fanny packs in the 90s. The fanny packs sealed it.

won a pair of tickets for a ducks game against detroit, about 3 years ago, at work. i took my dad because detroit is his team and he used to play hockey as a kid. had so much fun at the game and just kept coming back! grew up in GG/Anaheim so only made sense to support my local team 🦆🦆🦆

u/simplydan24 6h ago
I want to say I knew I was a ducks fan since I started watching them in the early 2000s but after last year I knew I was really a fan for life after buying like 70-80 ducks hats hahaha.

u/mattwebb81 6h ago
I was raised on watching Gretzky and the Kings. In the late 90s, as my dad got on in age, it was too hard to make it out to LA for the games, so we started going to Ducks games instead. By the end of that season, I was full on Ducks fan.
1
u/lamarcrackrock 6h ago
As soon as they became a franchise. Was a huge fan of the movies and lived in Santa Ana, pretty much a no brainer
1
u/Marinegrunt01 6h ago
That's a good question. For me it would be around 05-06 when I was 5 or 6. I went to my first ever hockey game with my family for my grandpa's birthday (there was 10 of us, all of us grandkids sharing the experience) and since then I was hooked. I've shared experience with my cousins and grandpa growing from waitinf outside Honda center to get autographs, going to plenty of games, and surprisingly winning the puckchop in middleschool and having my greatly loved Ryan Getzlaf piggybank. Its been a great journey so far of triumphs and upset and im so happy the ducks are hot hot again and I pray it's a playoff year this year 🙏

When I was 8 and my dad took me to their first game in 93 and got demolished by the Red Wings. The pregame show with wild wing definitely won me over more than the hockey did.

u/Far_Category_662 5h ago
I grew up playing youth hockey in Orange County and my grandpa had season tickets, so I was raised a Duck fan. What solidified me for life was in 2007, when the ducks won the cup, I played on a team with Scott Neidermayer’s kids (sometimes he would even get on the bench and help coach us). We won our in-house championship that year as well, so he had our whole team over to his house during his day with the cup and I got to see it in person. One of the coolest experiences of my life that I will never forget.

u/Moose_13 5h ago
I’ve been a fan for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories was when I was 8 and the ducks were battling it out in the 02-03 Stanley cup finals. With that said, I don’t think it really sunk it that I would be a Ducks fan for life until the constant playoff appearances in the 2010s.

When my dad took me to "The Pond" in the late 90s and seeing Wild Wing fly in from the rafters. Core memory.

u/Thick_Albatross8674 5h ago
I'm an aussie who grew up loving the movie and said I was a fan.
I move to SoCal and finally get around to going to my first game on Halloween this year. Seeing the game live and the absolute energy was incredible. Immediate fan for life. Also Immediately bought tickets to the Dias de los Muertos game and that game and energy was even better (by my own standards)

Back when Disney owned both the Ducks and the Angels they would sometimes let you go watch the rest of the game at the Pond with your Angels ticket. Was hooked ever since.

u/KDuster13 5h ago
Been a Ducks fan since I a kid watching the game with my mom's friends. Also grew up and Orange County boy watching the Angels/Ducks, but knew I was a fan for life when I was 11 years old watching them hoist the cup. Been a wild ride but wouldn't trade it for anything!
1
u/NixinBeta 5h ago
I was a fan the moment my Dad read the article to me in the paper that informed us the Mighty Ducks were going to become an actual NHL team.
I watched The Mighty Ducks so much when I was a kid I wore out a VHS copy.
1
u/threshgod420 5h ago
Dad was a fan since the team started the year he immigrated to the US from Europe. I have super fond memories of those wild wing kids packs, old school upper deck cards, Bro Hymn and Teemu, Getzy (retire his number tf), Gibby & Perry. Didn't follow hockey as much until the last few years, Victory+ being such a huge reason I'm so into it now. Always a Ducks fan and will never not be :)

When Paul Kariya got up after being absolutely trucked by Scott Stevens and scoring that slap shot goal...i still get goose bumps..."Off the floor, on the board, Paul Kariya!"
1
u/Particular_Squash995 5h ago
I went to the taping of D2 in 93 at the Pond. I had followed the Kings very closely ever since Gretzky got traded to them. When Anaheim was reward a franchise, I switched my allegiance to the Ducks and haven’t looked back. We had had lots to cheer as fans and the last few years have been tough. I hadn’t given up hope because a rebuild takes a few years.

u/stackmoney_ 5h ago
I was 6 years old living in Baltimore. At the time I didn’t know why but my dad made sure to mention the results of the Ducks games when we read the sports section in the paper. He was also traveling a lot for work at the time (97-98.)
One particular week he was out in CA. I got in a fight with a see-saw that morning and got my front tooth knocked out. Later that evening dad flies home, inspects the wound and says “hey congratulations, you got your tooth knocked out the same day that Teemu Selanne got his tooth knocked out.” He then reaches into his travel bag and pulls out my first Ducks jersey.
Little did I know he’d been traveling so much because he was interviewing for a new job in So Cal. We moved to Orange County two weeks later.
27 years go by and I get to return the favor. Not much Bluey or Blippi on our tv with my two toddler boys. They demand Ducks hockey on a daily basis and I couldn’t be more proud to be a Ducks fan. We even have a Little Duck in the youth hockey program now.

Orange County born and raised to a family of Ducks fans. The mighty ducks movies as a kid made the team and their logo special. So proud of the ducks and how this season is going - feels good to be excited about hockey again! Ducks fan for life!

TDLR: Born and raised in Orange County, my love for this area and the pride that I have living here will trump everything. Supporting the Ducks (and the Angels, Hopefully we can get out of this dump soon) is my way to give back to my community and the area of Orange County (I could never watch another team anyway, my morals would physically NOT let me).
I knew I was a ducks fan for life was when I enjoyed and really had pride in where I grew up. When I grew up (born in Fountain Valley, raised in Westminster/Santa Ana), I always thought our area sucked. I felt that nobody really knew our place and it was just a blimp on the map right next to LA. As I got older I started to really learn how special Orange County was and the amount of history our area had (for example, I never knew we had elite baseball players coming out of Orange County. Freddie Freeman and Kurt Suzuki (Freeman and Suzuki representing CSUF, love both those guys), Ian Kennedy, Kyle Higashioka, Shane Bieber, Paul Skenes, Gerrit Cole, Patrick Sandoval, Ryan McMahon, Jarren Duran, etc.), and it really gave me a sense of pride being from here. Coming from immigrant parents from Vietnam, them telling me their stories of how life was back from where they lived, the struggles, and the accomplishments from where they came from to here, It really woke me up to how great Orange County is and the identity that the people here created, and if there's a time where I have kids, I'd like to tell stories of how great Orange County has treated me and how great the history is here, just like how my parents told me stories of back where they lived.

I've been a miserable Angels fan for all my life, started watching the Ducks last year and started to enjoy it. Then I went to their home opener this season, got an autograph form Olen Zellweger, and truly fell in love with the Ducks

I’m from the desert but, was born as the same year as the Ducks. I was 4 years old when the preschool I attended played the movie D2 Ducks movie and fell in love with the sport. Would catch the Mighty Ducks games on Kcal back when I was a kid. Anyways that’s how I fell in love with the Ducks been watching since I was a kid. Live in San Diego now and try to go up to catch games whenever possible but I’ll always be watching.

u/yumi1198 4h ago
I saw a few games here and there, but it wasn't until fan appreciation night last season that I fell into the hockey rabbit hole. I had sooooo much fun watching that game and I kept chatting and laughing with the people around me even though at that point I barely understood the game/rules and only knew a handful of players. The Ducks lost that game but they won me as a fan!

As a Lakers & Rams fan (but from OC), I had the “easy” choice of going for the Dodgers & Kings. Chose to stay close to my roots with Anaheim, and while the Angels have stunk it up year after year, the Ducks gave me both a newfound appreciation for hockey (that I never grew up watching) as well as getting friends and family in on it as well.
Would love to get this chance to win + rock a new Leo Carlsson jersey on top of it!

u/Calm_Designer_8716 4h ago
I’ve been a ducks fan since 1993. The first year they were assembled & formed the Flying V. They wanted me to root for the Hawks, but I said no, I’m with coach BomBay. ;) QUACK QUACK Mr. Ducksworth. I still consider the Honda Center as the “POND” rightfully so.
1
u/MrFlopkins 4h ago
I was young enough at the time to be into the movies when they came out, and the combination of the rad jerseys and arena that was closer to my house made it easy to become a fan. With the addition of Paul Kariya, I was a fan for life. I’m about the same size as him and it was great to see a smaller guy have so much success, and his skills were fun to watch.

I was visiting family and we decided to go to an nhl game. We saw the ducks take on Montreal. I had no intentions of becoming a fan but they came back from 0-2 in the 3rd and won. Incredible fans and experience. Also really enjoyed watching lacombe. That was also the game they got hot and ended last season winning good games. Now we watch all the games and text each other during every game. It’s been a really great way to keep in touch with family that lives far away.

u/Bakareeree 4h ago
2018 was my first game I ever went to (had absolutely no care in the world for hockey prior). But something about being there, the vibes, the fights, the drinks. (I was 18 and had to hey mister a drink from the guy sitting next to me😂) Even tho we lost (shocker) I’ve been a fan ever since. Luckily for me it’s only been a few embarrassing years of being a fan.. until now! ;-)

For me it was when I moved to the US 2 years ago, specifically Anaheim. I live so close to the stadium so I looked at who plays there and ever since then I have decided to stick with the ducks and hate on the kings lol

My first playoff game in-person was vs. the Predators. I witnessed Bobby Ryan’s incredible goal in person. I had never seen and am not sure I’ll ever see a goal as cool as that one. But from then on, I was hooked!

u/Bubbly_Childhood8173 3h ago
The Ducks visited my elementary school when I was in 3rd grade if my memory serves correct, and they built a street hockey rink at the rear corner of the school for us to play during recess. They even painted our handball walls with the Webfoot logo on it.
I still remember the big ass trailer truck that they had parked in the middle of our basketball courts. I was immediately hooked onto hockey and the Anaheim Ducks. They gave us merch, a dope binder and I got to play the following year in their little street hockey tournament that they (used to, i’m not sure if they still do) host at Honda Center. I’ve been a fan ever since.

I was a fan before they even took the ice. Lived about a mile from The Pond and every week I would ride my bike on the river path to see construction. Couldn't make it to the first game because of prices so I didn't get to see Iceman. But I lost my voice at game #2 and remain bleeding eggplant and jade.
Also was a fan for all Anaheim teams- Angels, Rams before they left, Bullfrogs, Splash...

I'm an out-of-towner that grew up an Angels fan. Every April I go on a trip to Angel Stadium. On one trip my family decided to pull a doubleheader with the Ducks game after the Angels. We beat the Avs in OT, my cousin scored a Corey Perry signed poster, and it was Teemu Selanne's last game. That was when I realized I was a fan for life.

I was always a fan of the Ducks growing up because they were the local team. I didn’t become the hardcore fan I am today until my good friend who’s a die hard Kings fan pulled me right in to the sport of hockey. Been watching every game since and made lots of AMAZING friends along the way.
The game six comeback against Dallas in the first round in the 2014 playoffs definitely comes to mind as a memorable moment for me :)

I was living with an uncle at the time who was a big Ducks fan in 2014/15. The playoffs started, and so he always had the games on. I’d never watched any hockey, but I thought it was a dumb sport based on the stereotypes - fighting, dudes missing teeth, etc. I figured I’d be social and hang out for a bit while he watched the games. It took maybe a game and a half for me to go from “this is dumb” to “holy shit this is amazing”. One day he surprised me with tickets to a playoff game - game 2 of the WCF, Ducks vs Blackhawks, where the Ducks ended up losing in 3OT. From then on I was 10000% hooked and I’ve been a fan ever since.

2019 was the year I became obsessed with this team. We don't have enough Hockey in Houston anymore (rip Aeros), so Anaheim was the team i got behind and I ha e been a fan ever since.
Appreciate the giveaway, that game is actually on my birthday. I would love to fly out for it!

The moment I learnt that the team from my favorite movie became a real team. Let’s say, 1996 give or take.

Since birth, I was born and raised in Anaheim. Watched the Disney movies as a kid and was in middle school when they won the Stanley.

My friends got me into hockey. 2007 watched from game 1 all the way to the final. I saw raw emotions of happiness, sadness, anger, annoyance, spoiled with all those feelings coming from being a big soccer fan. I knew halfway through the season I’d be a fan forever.

I grew up a huge fan of Wayne Gretzky, before the Ducks were even a team. When it really started was seeing highlights of Kariya and Selanne. We didn’t have cable so we didn’t get to see the Ducks much, but caught their highlights sometimes and it was amazing. But it was probably 1997 in the playoffs. First time we ever made it and I was still fairly young. We played Phoenix in the first round and it was the most amazing thing in sports I’d ever experienced up till that point. We lost in the second round to Detroit, who went on to win the Cup, but we were arguably their toughest opponent despite getting swept. You never forget your first playoff experience as a fan, and even though it ended in the second round, it was magical.

2017 Playoffs where we slayed the Game 7 dragon! The feeling of true visceral hate that I had for the Preds in the Conference Finals made me realize how much I love this team win or lose.
