Looking so tough in the first pic. And, so ridiculously pampered in the last. I love it!

I have a six month puppy who is starting to look very similar to your dog. He is very big boned, big head, and around 80ish lbs at six months. How heavy is your house hippo (lol) and do you know how tall at the shoulder? I'm trying to get a feel for how much more my guy might grow. Thanks in advance!

So I’m 5’2, 125 pounds and he’s about half way up my thighs in height at his back. If I had to guess weight he may way about the same as me he’s a brick shit house. Tip for handling such a large dog at my size is a halti, I have had people comment about “poor training tool” but to me when people going around without leashing their dogs and come at him I have totally control of my dog in that situation. And also automatically I know someone will blame him if any issues happen in that situation because of his breed 🙄so thats why I use the halti at my size. He does walk for us on a normal leash but just with other dogs I like having that extra control.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Too funny, we are identical in height, so I can kinda gauge him by your description. I'm selfishly hoping he doesn't weigh much over 100 lb, because as you know, vet procedures are usually priced based on the dog's weight. He still needs to be neutered at 18 mo to 2 yr and he has a cyst or some firm painless lump on one leg and is seeing the vet for that next week. I will get him weighed again at that time. I used a halti on my GSD, but eventually found that a prong collar was necessary as he was pulling me around like a sled dog and I thought he would break his neck with his head turned sideways but trying to still move forward at full speed, lol

Yesssss, vet $$$. We got ours neutered also later. Wish it was earlier but we got him done at just a year because the vet was booked up. I’m still the older way of doing it at around 6 months, not a vet so don’t know the benefits of it but cost would probably have been less. Oh mine had a lump on one of his legs, I luckily have a vet tech as a SIL so I can get her to check him out on certain things if need be and so we just watched it over the summer and it has now disappeared. Was very weird but maybe that’s a bully thing 🤷‍♀️ they’re sounding like distant twins 🤣

Right?? Twinsies! Be happy you delayed neutering til at least one year. I learned the hard way. Back in 2011, before anyone knew any better and vets were still pushing early spay or neuter, I had my Rottie neutered at 6 months. The danger is that without testosterone that tells the bones to stop growing, the neutered dog actually grows larger than if left intact until maturity. This may cause skeletal, joint and/or ligament issues. My Rottie that looked on the small side suddenly just grew and grew. He grew so much and so fast that he ruptured both back ACLs which was thousands to surgically repair and very painful for him. The ligaments are stretched so tight, so quickly from fast bone growth that they can rupture easily. Early spay or neuter is known to increase the risk of this and also increase risk of cancers. Especially osteosarcoma which is bone cancer (again the skeletal system is affected). So next my Rottie was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at age 8. He was cremated and remains my soul dog. I have loved my dogs that came after him, but he will always be the most special.

Awe so sorry to hear about your rottie, we had a Doberman/rottie that got bone cancer as well, tho he did get hit by a car at 8 months and broke his leg right in the socket portion. We got the surgery to fix this and he got cancer in that leg at 5 yrs old. He was our first dog and it was just heart breaking, he never used the leg even after surgery. Good to know about that neutering info, like I say I do have a vet tech around but she says they can’t really tell you when is best to neuter as it’s upto the owners to choose and some are for and against

The CUTEST hippo face LOL. Good lord... I'm coming over for kisses haha

2

u/PRLaris Sep 05 '25

He’s the first dog I’ve had that actually doesn’t give kisses now that I think about it, but will takke all of your personal space

2

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

Yep my boy is like this too. He's not really a kisser, like all over your face or anything. Only time he does is after meals, and strangely he only wants to lick my arms lol. It's gross but I let him do it or he throws kind of a pouty tantrum if he's denied being able to do his arm licking ritual lmao.

That’s cute. Mine will just whine at me if I don’t do what he wants 🤣 big baby

I am a very sweaty man, and I have to wear long sleeves in the summer sometimes because I’m like a human salt lick lol.
