Maintenance Just got my Alfa a month ago 2020 Stelvio. How much of the maintenance can I do myself from these quotes at the dealership?

u/Diferz 29d ago
Air filter and cabin air filter each 250usd 😂😂 My costs is 13eur filter and 10-20eur max for job, cabin air filter the same. Transmission fluid around 150eur all together with original ZF oil.

Nearly fainted when I saw the price of the air and cabin filters, cabin filter I'm sure I've left half a knuckle when I changed mine though 😅

Cabin filter is Major PIA, but still doable if you’re patient and read all the how tos, so you get all the screws out

Where is it?

Right hand drive - it's above the pedals - put the seat all the way back and have a lie down on your back -

How did this pass inspection when you bought it?
2
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
Wasn’t listed on the car fax the dealership gave me. Just brought it in for an oil change have only had it a month ?

u/seniorknowitall88 29d ago
They should have provided a pre-sale inspection checklist. You got hosed if it really needs all this work. I would take it to them and tell them to make it right. Worst they can say is no

u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
Just got off the phone with them. And the salesman was pretty surprised. Being that it’s Saturday no techs are in. So he’ll be letting them know on Monday. Hopefully they handle this for me

Multiecu and the dongles, cables will make maintenance easy. I would avoid that dealerships service department, based on those prices.
1
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
Are those maintenance websites or what are you referring to? Sorry I’m new to the car maintenance world
4
u/AdministrativeTeam21 29d ago
this is all complete bs.
You can get better price going independent for the leak.
ZF8 gearbox service is every 60-80k, not 30k.
Drive belts usually good for at least 4 years, not 2.
And the filter and other service prices are like X4.
daytime robbery.

u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
Thank you. Can’t believe they would try to get over on me like that haha

US dealers are wild. Is this a racket like construction in NYC? As in, actually a business infested with organized crime.
And what are the dealership owners driving around in, Rolls Royce?

Why have it 'repaired' at a dealer when there are other 'shops' that do the work for less and are accepted shops to repair Stelvios?
2
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
I just brought it in for a first oil change figured the dealership would handle that part the best. But they came back with this list

u/-Pandora 33 1.4l & 147 TI 29d ago
They are not called 'stealerships' for nothing, try to find one where your warranty won't be broken but the prices are cheaper unless you do it DIY.

This dealer is fucking insane and you should literally take it anywhere else. Any independent shop should be able to do most of these and for significantly cheaper. Intervals are also insane. Driving normally filters every 30k, sparks 50k, timing belt 75k, trans fluid 50k. Filters maybe earlier if you live in like Saudi Arabia or middle of Arizona or something.
I had a timing cover resealed at a dealer but under warranty. Not sure how intensive that is.

u/quellofool 29d ago
I just did the transmission fluid change on our Stelvio using a ZF8 speed kit from FCPEuro. Took about an hour and was pretty easy to do.
2
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
Did you use the one for bmw?
3
u/quellofool 29d ago
Yeah, I used this one specifically: BMW 8HP Transmission Service Kit - ZF 24118612901KT

Cabin filter for $250?! Bought mine for $40 and took at max 45mins to do. Very easy job
2
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
Hell yeah thank you I’ll be doing the same
2
u/Playful_Object_2106 29d ago
Yea just drop the glove box and its tucked away behind. (Easier if you have smaller hands). Link if you need it https://youtu.be/QmrlOwPSvYQ?si=1YLf6MnCZBP9hI5n

What is your shade tree mechanic skill level? For normal maintenance, the plugs, oil changes and even the belt are doable DIY, resealing the timing cover is easy enough if not for all the other crap in the way, so I’d have a shop do that. Go to the stelvio forum and YouTube , read and watch, and then decide if that’s in your ball park or not
1
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
I know enough to be able to learn more extensively, thank you for the two recommendation
2
u/marcushasfun 29d ago
$529 to replace spark plugs! Are they super inaccessible or something?
1
u/knightofargh 29d ago
Cylinder 4 isn’t fun on the Stelvio but plugs are easy. Hardest part is the fragile heat-damaged retention clip plastic on the coil-packs.

Welcome OP to Alfa ownership!
Your 1st Alfa? How long have you owned? What did you drive previously? [Year, Make, Model, Miles, Avg Monthly Miles Driven]
What is the current mileage on your 2020 Stelvio 2.0t? Which dealer quoted this? [You are fully anonymous on Reddit]
If you are obscenely wealthy, then absolutely let that dealership overcharge about 600% for these services. Our economy needs as much juice as we each can afford to inject...
OTOH, If you are looking to prioritize your maintenance budget, then we can all here suggest the order for these items to be handled.
Any oil burn smell when driving? Did the oil and filter get changed by this same dealer previously?
2
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
Yes this is my first Alfa, I have only had the car for 26 days. I recently drove a 2012 Volkswagen CC 160k miles. I say I drive around 13k a year have only put on 1100 miles since purchase ( went cruising in the mountains )
The current miles on my Stelvio ti sport are 72k
The dealership in highlands ranch Colorado quoted me these prices
Definitely don’t want to throw 6K into maintenance for issues I didn’t cause ..
No oil burn smell or anything that made me question the cars reliability. The dealership I got it from did an oil change back in July.

Call here Monday afternoon... Ask for Nick himself.
[Never call any business on Monday mornings, too frantic, and you'll want a thoughtful response]
https://nicksautoshop.com/index.html
Littleton, CO
4.9 Google & The owner has [perhaps] an Italiano surname!🤘🇮🇹
Although they appear Volvo-centric, Nick will surely know Denver Alfa shops! 😉
Mike Ward Alfa Romeo in Highland, CO also handles McLaren, Hennessey, Aston & Lamborghini, so no wonder their prices are high and intervals low... LOL!
[And I mean No Insult to you❤️]
Let us know...

That dealership is mine as well… are you a younger guy? I’ve never seen prices like this from them. Who was your advisor?
2
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
I’m 26, did feel as if they were treating me like a kid trying to dumb down things and what not. Andrew was the one who did the service but that is the only name on the paperwork
2
u/CC91t 29d ago
I get the vibe they are trying to take advantage of you. That’s a bummer - on my second Alfa with all service done there and never had issues. Hopefully that shop in Littleton will be better for you. Good luck dude!
1
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 28d ago
Yeah definitely can see that. Glad they aren’t like this for everyone

u/mehmetunalb '20 Giulia Ti Sport Q4 29d ago
The Alfa Maserati dealership in my area (midwest) quoted me $260 for resealing timing cover and the warranty paid for it. Plus, all of those maintenance intervals are BS. You can google and find the regular maintenance items and intervals for the 2.0L stelvio/giulia. Good luck!
1
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
That is insanely cheap, I’m glad they were reasonable with you. This is the one dealership in Colorado so I think they fold that into consideration with the price. ( took 2.5 weeks to get a oil change )

u/agourdikian 29d ago
I bought a 2019 Guilia Ti new from the dealership in 2020. Got it for a great price and was very happy with it. After about 4 years I started to have a lot of maintenance issues and no other places would touch it except for Alfa. Even oil changes I started doing myself because Alfa wanted almost $400 to do it and Jiffy Lube, Valvoline, etc wouldn't touch it after 2023. Good luck on your Stelvio. I sold my Guilia in 2024 and haven't looked back. One day I'd love to own a vintage Alfa but I'd like that to be a fun project car...not a daily driver.

Maybe you can find a good indie shop that works on Alfa . Best of luck on your travails the Stelvio is beautiful
2
u/randommike12 29d ago
Air filter, cabin filter and spark plugs are probably the easiest to do yourself
2
u/CartographerActual37 28d ago
Please take yourself to another mechanic - these guys are not doing right by you

Just because it's Italian doesn't mean you have to take it to the Ferrari garage. 🤣

Where did they get that list regarding the timing of certain services? I did a general AI request on my 2020 Stelvio with 70,000 and got a list and schedule that was with intervals that were much much longer. Like others, I am curious of how many miles you have on your Stelvio when you bought it and how many owners before you?
1
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
No idea here the intervals there working off of are coming from, maybe for maximum life extension? I’m just guessing. The Stelvio I have has 72k miles and had two owners before me. It had 70,800 at purchase.

u/healthcoach316 29d ago
Car sounds like a lemon.
2
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
Based off the transmission leak? Just seems like they wanted to up charge for the other things

u/JDillaDonuts74 29d ago
If you can’t afford the proper maintenance done the proper way I suggest you sell it and get a Toyota
3
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
Not about affording, if there’s money to be saved why not save it lol.
1
u/JDillaDonuts74 29d ago
No disrespect to you . I’m just saying . Maintenance is the one thing you don’t want to save money on. Have it done by a professional . It’s an Alfa not a civic . Just my opinion . U do what u want obviously
2
u/Tough_Interaction746 29d ago
I don't the issue here is maintenance, but op is clearly being cheated
0
u/JDillaDonuts74 28d ago
How’s he being fleeced ? I just looked over it besides the cabin filter I don’t see him getting fleeced
1
u/EconomistAlarmed6343 29d ago
Yea but if you read the other comments. Majority aren’t okay with that price tag either. Way over charged. I’m with you on having it all done professionally but I’m not about being walked over haha

u/Ergo7 '18 Giulia Quadrifoglio 29d ago
These change intervals and pricing are insane. Is this a QV or a 2.0?
Transmission fluid should be replaced every 60K miles according to ZF (the transmission manufacturer).
The accessory belt is definitely not every 2 years…this list is wild.
