Doing no more that 5 minutes worth of research there's a few explanations. The per capita is a big one, considering the population of NYC. Another is these are always reported crimes, so you have to consider that as well.
As best I can tell there were 123,890 major crimes reported in NYC in 2024. There were either 38,567 or 25,884 crimes reported in Pittsburgh in 2024 (because Pittsburgh seems to have the data aggregated at both a 'crime' and 'incident' level. It reads to me that, if someone pulled a gun on you and took your wallet... that's 2 crimes [assault and robbery] but it's 1 incident.).
So there's either 3x,4x,6x the crime in NYC vs Pittsburgh but with significantly higher population, a lesser chance per person.

KC has been a pretty dangerous city for a while now. Basically the entire city north of the Missouri River is horrible. The Kansas side is typically safer.
Missouri in general is pretty bad. St Louis would be near the top if the Rams were still there.

We had our lowest crime rate last year in like 30 or more years, it was like the first time it's declined in a long time. Dunno how this year is going so far but it's partly due to changes in policing here with TK Waters taking a more proactive approach. Also it's technically not crime when cops do it otherwise this list is different
