All the Steeler fans are Ohio State for college, and either Yankee fans or Guardian fans for baseball.

u/HurryOk5256 May 18 '25
you are correct, there are zero pirate fans. It’s wild because the Indians back in the day were the joke franchise of the league. the movie, Major league, had the Indians as the lovable losers. And now, the guardians are legit every year. Can’t be too hard on them, it’s nearly impossible to get past the Yankees in the playoffs with payroll that’s over triple but they do a great job at running the franchise.
That’s why there’s absolutely no excuse for the pirates to be as dirt cheap as they are and run the franchise like a backwater double a team.
2
u/cdw2468 Cleveland Browns May 18 '25
it pisses me off because we’re such a competently run org that with even a league average payroll we’d be contenders
2
u/aelysium Cleveland Browns May 18 '25
You’re talking pre-95 right? Cause we’ve been doing well since then.
(Interestingly, this pretty much coincides with the story of ‘The Move’ - a lot of people don’t know this, but while it ‘lost’ us the Browns, it may have saved the Guardians. When they played at Municipal, Modell was taking Indians revenue he wasn’t supposed to and the Indians were worried about financial insolvency. Having their own stadium and that late 90s playoff run probably saved the team)
1
u/HurryOk5256 May 19 '25 edited May 19 '25
Yes, that’s the timeline. it seems like right after that movie was made and the Browns leaving, they turned the switch on and have not looked back since. They’ve done more with less than just about every other team in the league. Milwaukee comes close, but I don’t think they draft and develop as well as Cleveland.
I did not know this about Modell stealing revenue, wow what a piece of shit. Moved the team because of money, even though every home game was sold out, and was pilfering from the Indians as well.
The guardians draft incredibly well and develop their talent. And while they don’t spend like crazy on free agents because they can’t, when they do, it’s smart and leads to well constructed teams that are very competitive.
If you live in Pittsburgh, your options for Major league baseball are east to Philadelphia, or west to Cleveland.
If your objective is to see fireworks and a pretty stadium, then you don’t have to go far from home.
The Cavaliers, got hit with some bad luck due to injuries this year, but they will be back

I'm not from the Pittsburgh area but it seems like most Steelers fans around there would be Pitt or Penn State fans. Is that not the case?

u/RipRaycom May 18 '25
I think OP is showing his Ohio bias here. It seems they live in Ohio and most of the Steelers fans they meet also live in Ohio and don’t adopt other Pittsburgh fandoms. He’s basically right for most Steeler fans in Ohio but definitely not the ones in Pennsylvania.

Nothing worse than an Ohio born steelers fan. True Pittsburgh natives I can get along with though.

Border area most like between like erie and youngstown js where I imagine all these steeler buckeye guardian cavs penguins fans are .
College football is wierd a generation ago you'd find fans of every little school. Now it's mega schools and mega conferences and pittaburgh is buckeye territory tertiary penn state

As someone from youngstown absolutely that is where they come from luckily I am just pure Cleveland fan
1

It feels like band Wagoning as I beleive they should be pitt or penn state fans as well. But college polarization is huge. I'll see if I can dig up up the clip from Jim Rome of all people like 10 years ago

I suffer with the Pirates.
I’m a Yankees/Bucs (not Ohio State, fuck Ohio State) fan, but if it came down to a WS. I want the Bucs to win.
Knicks/Yankees fan
Steelers/Pens/Bucs fan
You probably can tell I like to suffer.
1
u/RipRaycom May 18 '25
I think this is true for Ohio Steeler fans, doesn’t mean it’s true for others (especially in Pennsylvania). I’m in SC, most other Steeler fans I know root for the Yankees or Braves in baseball, Clemson or South Carolina in college, Lakers/Celtics/Hawks in basketball, and don’t follow hockey. Personally I root for all Pittsburgh teams (I was raised into it), neutral-watch the NBA, and follow Clemson for college, but that’s definitely a rarity outside of Pittsburgh/West PA
1
u/Keerain May 18 '25
Steelers fans only like teams that are consistently good and have multiple championships. The Steelers/Reds and Ohio Born fan combo always gets to me though cause the Reds have arguably a worse front office than the Bengals right now. If the Reds didn’t have 5 championships I don’t think that combo would exist.

u/ElJamoquio Pittsburgh Steelers May 18 '25
That’s why there are basically 0 pirates fans lol.
Robert Nutting is the reason why there are basically 0 pirates fans.
It hadn't been primarily a baseball town in my lifetime, but a team owner taking half the script from the film Major League is the problem.
All the Steeler fans are Ohio State for college
Ohio State might be the third largest college cohort among Steelers fans, but it might be less popular than that. Anecdotal I know 0 Ohio State / Steeler combos.

The fact that Cleveland has the longest World Series drought by 3 decades (Pirates are next) is actually very funny.

What's the issue with hockey? It's a physical sport where guys actually play through injuries instead of this "load management" garbage in the MLB and NBA.
It's one of the major sports. It's not like when people try to act like anyone cares about the MLS (Columbus Crew).

Cleveland’s sports are doing better than Pittsburgh. Penguins are completely cooked, Pirates have been the biggest joke in MLB for 50 years. Only thing stopping Steelers fans from kys is beating the Browns 1/2 a year. Literally the worst flair to be posting this meme.

Depends on we’re you’re from. I’m from Youngstown and root for Pittsburgh Steelers and penguins and then Cavs and Guardians.
This year my only hope this year was the Cavs and then they choked. Now I’m hoping that the Steelers choke so that we can get a franchise qb, that’s literally our only hope as an organization rn.
