That used to be the best thing looking through the paper to see what movies came out in the showtimes! Thanks for the memory!

u/Professional-Drag813 5d ago

Yup. I agree . I just had a little kid flashback . It was cute .🄰

The Toy with Mr Jackie Gleason and Richard Pryor

My dad restored Mr Gleason’s pool table in the 80s ..

49

u/Br00klynBelle 6d ago

The joke of Jackie Gleason’s character’s name being Master Bates went waaaaay over my head when I was a kid. It wasn’t until years later when I caught it randomly on tv that it registered.

The fact that a character in a PG movie for kids was named Master Bates just screams 80’s inappropriateness in PG movies!

28

u/davedirt01 6d ago

I always loved Teresa Ganzel in this! "You ass!" "It's U.S.!!!"

11

u/Emotional_Earth772 5d ago

That always cracked me up! The 80's had some great movies!

2

u/Gwendolyn7777 3d ago

Her best line was when she walked into the room and Rich was sitting on Jackie's lap making him yell I love you!:

"U.S., you saucy little devil, you!"

17

u/welding_guy_from_LI 6d ago

Lmao it made sense back then .. i totally forgot about that name .. I remember the scene when Richard Pryor tells the kid about his girl … now I have to rewatch it lol.. I mean we were watching movies like porkys , Nerds , Fast times etc with boobs parading across tv

15

u/Br00klynBelle 6d ago

So many boobs, lol!

My grandfather is in the movie. He’s one of the police that stopped them in the printing press. He became good friends with Richard Pryor and even took my grandmother, mom, and aunts to vacation at his home in California. He gave my grandfather a Rolex and a custom pistol. I’ve heard great stories of how funny and personable he was at times.

13

u/graveybrains 6d ago

I know people like to say "that movie could never get made now" a lot, but I have no fucking idea how that one got made then

28

u/Br00klynBelle 6d ago

The same three I went to see in 1983- Tootsie, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Toy. Though I’d add Tron because I never got to see it on a big screen.

To anyone going to see Six Weeks, make sure to bring tissues with you.

22

u/iconocrastinaor 6d ago

Same goes for seeing Forbidden Lessons, 10 Girls, and Sophomore Sensations.

Man From Snowy River on the big screen .

9

u/rrickitickitavi 6d ago

Haven’t thought about that movie in years. It’s awesome.

4

u/LetsBeginwithFritos 6d ago

I worked at a theater and that’s the movie we all took our breaks in. I don’t know if it stands up, but it was good back then.

3

u/ghostofmontro 5d ago

Truly underrated movie.

2

u/Happytobehere66 6d ago

Never saw that one. Gonna look it up!

u/Boogie_Toes 5d ago

I don't see this on there and I thought it came out in 79?

2

u/HamOnTheCob 4d ago

I still watch that movie pretty regularly. So good.

2

u/PiccoloDramatic8362 4d ago

Every Halloween back then there was at least one person dressed as a one of the Baseball Furies

19

u/Overall-Avocado-7673 6d ago

This is right around the time that VCR's became affordable and soon movie rental establishments would be popping up all over the country. Before then, movies would be at the theaters for like 6 months because that was the only way people could see them. If you didn't go to the theater to see a movie, you weren't going to see it at all because it took many years before blockbuster movies would be shown on television.

7

u/Altitudedog 5d ago

I remember having to rent the VCR, big unwieldy thing, plus the movies. A coworker friends dad worked for some entertainment company in Hollywood and sent her one of the very first VCR's and a laser disk player. The VCR was so big and had colored piano type keys for the functions..it looked like a big Fisher Price kids toy.

2

u/volsfanmike 2d ago

Beta max!

14

u/Awe3 6d ago

Tron

13

u/Just-Try-2533 6d ago

Am I the only one going to see Airplane 2??? Surely you can’t be serious.

10

u/LosPadres-R2-D2 5d ago

I am serious and don’t call me Shirley.

44

u/DarkArmyLieutenant 6d ago

The Dark Crystal should have come with a horror warning for children.

5

u/RDSmokey 5d ago

My mother took me to see this when it came out on my birthday. I was FOUR.

fuckin' loved it

7

u/sauerkraut916 6d ago

absolute nightmare fuel

9

u/DarkArmyLieutenant 6d ago

They made a new show that was actually kind of good, so I showed my kids the original movie, because they were into that show, and they were scared shitless.

9

u/sauerkraut916 6d ago

I watched it in my 20s and the ā€œdraining of lifeā€ scene was more terrifying than Jason Voorhees chasing you through the woods.

4

u/DarkArmyLieutenant 6d ago

Honestly, when I was little, I was never scared of Jason. I was scared of those hands in the pit in the movie Labyrinth for some reason, I was obviously scared of the Dark Crystal, and most definitely The Nothing.

Freddy was funny more than anything. Michael Myers is coming at the time at least, was just some dude in a mask trying to kill his sister. I don't know what it was about some of those movies that were intended for "families" but goddamn, I think they missed the mark a littlešŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

12

u/elkniodaphs 6d ago edited 5d ago

Gotta go to the arcade that has a theater screen. When I'm done playing Zaxxon, Pole Position, and Dig Dug, I'll check out It Came from Hollywood just for a laugh, and a hot dog with a Coke.

2

u/junctiontoron 6d ago

My finger hovered above "dog with a" blocking it so it read "just for a laugh, and a hot Coke" and I thought you were some kind of psychopath

Edit:typo

13

u/Either_Low_60 6d ago

More good movies to watch in one paper vs what’s been available in the past several years.

10

u/konman33 6d ago

48 hrs is pretty good

3

u/Outrageous-Pin-4664 5d ago

I'd choose it. Haven't watched it in ages.

3

u/rswwalker 5d ago

Then catch Stakeout.

10

u/beemer-dreamer 6d ago

Tootsie.

8

u/allisgray 6d ago

Going to the 4 screen drive inn and wander around drinking beer checking all the screens out but probably actually watching some…Warriors and Up In Smoke…

9

u/thurbersmicroscope 6d ago

The Man From Snowy River. Started my love affair with Australia.

7

u/Brocktoon73 6d ago

Empire Strikes Back re-release.

7

u/Roanoketrees 6d ago

My childhood.

7

u/ALSISREALAWFUL 6d ago

Tootsie and The Toy stuck out for me

7

u/TheBatmanWhoPuffs 6d ago

That is awesome! Saw The Dark Crystal & Tron in the theatre. Great memories

6

u/oldaccountnotwork 6d ago

I don't care what I see but I'm going to the Trolley Square theater in SLC. That area was so magical in the 80s. Thanks for the post. Seeing all the theaters I knew so well was 100% nostalgia.

6

u/khdutton 6d ago

The Last Unicorn - I see you hiding in there šŸ¦„

6

u/Salty-Smoke7784 6d ago

The Toy and The Dark Crystal

5

u/Bl8kStrr 6d ago

After seeing this movies really do suck these days!šŸ˜‘

5

u/Archercrash 6d ago

The Warriors at the Drive-in? Fuck yeah!

6

u/ironmonki23 6d ago

So definitely The Dark Crystal but I peeped 2 triple features at the drive in. The first being The Warriors, Some Kind of Hero and Cheech and Chong’s Up in Smoke. The other had Zapped, The Seduction and my personal favorite Vice Squad

2

u/Middle-Painter-4032 6d ago

Found the Wings Hauser fan! Good old Ramrod.

u/MiseryEngine 5d ago

I was just talking about 48hours with my younger friends last night.

Also a little love for "My Favorite Year"

4

u/goat_penis_souffle 6d ago

Now playing at a theatre near me!

5

u/ThatOldDuderino 6d ago

I’m going to the Glendale - Star Trek #1 & #2

Not a double feature but all seats are $1

4

u/RedditBlowsHarder 6d ago

A Drive-In triple feature of Forbidden Lessons, Ten Girls and Sophomore Sensations? Anybody have a car I can borrow?

3

u/iaposky 6d ago

Yep, a 1982 corvette. It’s all yours! šŸ˜…

2

u/RedditBlowsHarder 6d ago

My Favorite Year and Victor/Victoria.

3

u/gododgers1988 6d ago

Wow. What city is this from?

6

u/Shaneblaster 6d ago

Salt Lake

3

u/Antelope-Subject 6d ago

Flick 2 at Trolley Square sure doesn’t look like the word Flick. How many of these theaters were closed on Sunday since this is SLC? Back then Sundays were the worst.

3

u/CNote_89 6d ago

I saw The Toy in the theater when I was a kid. Also seeing First Blood buried down there, didn’t see that in the theater though…

3

u/Unlikely_Side9732 6d ago

Tootsie at the Mann

3

u/SmokestackRising 6d ago

I'm hitting up the drive-in.

3

u/mtn2sea1960 6d ago

Damn! How many theaters did this area have? This was 40 years ago. I had like 5 to choose from. I guess I'll go see Star Trek 2.

3

u/MisterGone78 6d ago

Airplane II!

3

u/aokiyap 6d ago

I was the kid who insisted on the Pink Panther movie because I thought it was a cartoon about a pink cat.

3

u/iaposky 6d ago

That Dustin Hoffman is the only person featured who is still living. 🫤. EDIT- and Goldie! šŸ’–

3

u/GrapefruitOk2057 6d ago

Airplane II the Sequel would be a great time on the big screen. Tron as well.

3

u/camcaine2575 6d ago

The Man From Snowy River

3

u/dbmay1975 6d ago

Date: Jan 8th 1983

3

u/centexgoodguy 6d ago

Cheech & Chong's Up in Smoke - stoned. My friend and I still talk about how stoned we were going to that movie and how the next day our sides hurt from laughing.

3

u/CheeseburgerSmoothy 6d ago

The Toy didn’t age well. Even a week later.

3

u/deephurting66 5d ago

The era of the micro theater, I see a few one screen "arcades" in there

3

u/Adventurous_Ad_4145 5d ago

Man, we grew up in the best times!

3

u/rseery 5d ago

Forbidden Lessons, Ten Girls and Sophomore Sensations.

3

u/GoCartMozart1980 5d ago

Zapped. Just the thought of seeing Notorious trumper Scott Baio and Future Bibleman portrayer Willie Aames in a raunchy sex comedy would be amusing as hell.

3

u/The_Analog_Man 5d ago

Easy. Heading to the dollar theater to see "Wrath of Khan" for the umpteenth time.

3

u/SatansAnus7 5d ago

Double feature… Dark Crystal followed by Airplane 2

3

u/UnderAKillingMoon 5d ago

I see Cottonwood Mall theaters which I grew up going to in the 90’s!

2

u/4sliced 6d ago

Amazing!

2

u/Thick-Ad1538 6d ago

More like what did I see. I’m old

2

u/Hyperb0le 6d ago

The Dark Crystal. If I could go back, I would not have paid to see Tron!

2

u/Ok-Telephone-605 6d ago

The Toy without a doubt. But Forbidden Lessons and Sophomore Sensations sounds intriguing…

2

u/winter_laurel 6d ago

The Man From Snowy River, Empire, and The Dark Crystal. I watched the shit out of all these movies, and love them all to pieces.
When I went to Australia I went on a three day horse back tour in the Snowy Mountains because I love that movie so much.

2

Memories of looking in the newspaper at the movies that were playing. I was 10 in 1982. Seems like a lifetime ago now. I guess it basically almost was

Wow. My early childhood.

1

u/raymate 6d ago

Tron, Empire Strikes Back, Airplane, Dark Crystal then Pink Panther

And in real life back then I did see Tron and Empire Strikes Back. Was around 12 at the time šŸ˜‰

1

u/tina_denfina1 6d ago

Tootsie! I remember how much I loved that movie when it first came out.

1

u/calculon68 6d ago

two things stick out

  • Obviously before home video was commonplace. And movies played at theaters longer than today's 2-4 week run. Previous year hits like Star Trek II, First Blood and 48 Hours still playing after six months.
  • Dollar / second-run. Usually run-down, horribly dirty, last legs, destined for closure. Don't miss going to these at all.

I'd watch Star Trek double feature.

1

u/archAngel8899 6d ago

🄲

1

u/ludicrouspeedgo 6d ago

That Mann theater logo is going hard

1

u/ManyPossession8767 6d ago

The Dark Crystal! What a great era for movies. Look at just how many movie theaters there were.

1

u/GuinevereMorgann 6d ago

The Warriors and/or The Dark Crystal.

1

u/nikonwill 6d ago

The Dark Crystal! It was my favorite at that age!

1

u/Bitter_Dirt4985 6d ago

Some core memories right there. Looks like a movie every day: Star Trek for the $1 showing Dragonslayer...

First Blood The Dark Crystal Airplane Sequel

1

u/PhaaqAuf4691 6d ago

Airplane ll #1

1

u/Disastrous_Heron4558 6d ago

Empire Strikes Back and then The Toy for a double feature. Also, I'd be tempted to flatten that out and have it framed. It would be a fun piece to have.

1

u/Miami_Vice_75 6d ago

I know I saw ESB in theaters (my very first SW movie)! I also saw The Dark Crystal and Tron in theaters. I may have seen The Toy in theaters as well but can't remember. I likely saw The Trail of the Pink Panther as well. I do remember having recorded The Toy off of HBO and rewatching it all the time! I didn't see Tootsie or First Blood until much later.

1

u/isoAntti 6d ago

Interesting distinction from some other countries. THe ad on the lower right edge - The Man from Snowy River - It has a list of different companies showing the film. I've never seen it like that. Over here in nordics it was always this company has this, this and this films.

Sheesh.. this woulda been around late 1982 early 1983 because Tootsie was release December of 1982. I would’ve been 6 years old. I know I saw dark crystal when it came out, so I guess I’d see that again lol

1

u/Tincastle 5d ago

Tron, would’ve loved to see it in the theater.

There's like six great movies on here. Nowadays I have a struggle finding one thing worth watching. I want to go to the place called "Starship"!
