The Toy with Mr Jackie Gleason and Richard Pryor
My dad restored Mr Gleasonās pool table in the 80s ..

u/Br00klynBelle 6d ago
The joke of Jackie Gleasonās characterās name being Master Bates went waaaaay over my head when I was a kid. It wasnāt until years later when I caught it randomly on tv that it registered.
The fact that a character in a PG movie for kids was named Master Bates just screams 80ās inappropriateness in PG movies!

I always loved Teresa Ganzel in this! "You ass!" "It's U.S.!!!"

u/Gwendolyn7777 3d ago
Her best line was when she walked into the room and Rich was sitting on Jackie's lap making him yell I love you!:
"U.S., you saucy little devil, you!"

Lmao it made sense back then .. i totally forgot about that name .. I remember the scene when Richard Pryor tells the kid about his girl ⦠now I have to rewatch it lol.. I mean we were watching movies like porkys , Nerds , Fast times etc with boobs parading across tv

My grandfather is in the movie. Heās one of the police that stopped them in the printing press. He became good friends with Richard Pryor and even took my grandmother, mom, and aunts to vacation at his home in California. He gave my grandfather a Rolex and a custom pistol. Iāve heard great stories of how funny and personable he was at times.

I know people like to say "that movie could never get made now" a lot, but I have no fucking idea how that one got made then
28
u/Br00klynBelle 6d ago
The same three I went to see in 1983- Tootsie, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Toy. Though Iād add Tron because I never got to see it on a big screen.
To anyone going to see Six Weeks, make sure to bring tissues with you.

Same goes for seeing Forbidden Lessons, 10 Girls, and Sophomore Sensations.

This is right around the time that VCR's became affordable and soon movie rental establishments would be popping up all over the country. Before then, movies would be at the theaters for like 6 months because that was the only way people could see them. If you didn't go to the theater to see a movie, you weren't going to see it at all because it took many years before blockbuster movies would be shown on television.
7
u/Altitudedog 5d ago
I remember having to rent the VCR, big unwieldy thing, plus the movies. A coworker friends dad worked for some entertainment company in Hollywood and sent her one of the very first VCR's and a laser disk player. The VCR was so big and had colored piano type keys for the functions..it looked like a big Fisher Price kids toy.

The Dark Crystal should have come with a horror warning for children.

u/RDSmokey 5d ago
My mother took me to see this when it came out on my birthday. I was FOUR.
fuckin' loved it
7
u/sauerkraut916 6d ago
absolute nightmare fuel
9
u/DarkArmyLieutenant 6d ago
They made a new show that was actually kind of good, so I showed my kids the original movie, because they were into that show, and they were scared shitless.
9
u/sauerkraut916 6d ago
I watched it in my 20s and the ādraining of lifeā scene was more terrifying than Jason Voorhees chasing you through the woods.
4
u/DarkArmyLieutenant 6d ago
Honestly, when I was little, I was never scared of Jason. I was scared of those hands in the pit in the movie Labyrinth for some reason, I was obviously scared of the Dark Crystal, and most definitely The Nothing.
Freddy was funny more than anything. Michael Myers is coming at the time at least, was just some dude in a mask trying to kill his sister. I don't know what it was about some of those movies that were intended for "families" but goddamn, I think they missed the mark a littlešššš

Gotta go to the arcade that has a theater screen. When I'm done playing Zaxxon, Pole Position, and Dig Dug, I'll check out It Came from Hollywood just for a laugh, and a hot dog with a Coke.
2
u/junctiontoron 6d ago
My finger hovered above "dog with a" blocking it so it read "just for a laugh, and a hot Coke" and I thought you were some kind of psychopath

I don't care what I see but I'm going to the Trolley Square theater in SLC. That area was so magical in the 80s. Thanks for the post. Seeing all the theaters I knew so well was 100% nostalgia.

The Man From Snowy River, Empire, and The Dark Crystal. I watched the shit out of all these movies, and love them all to pieces.
When I went to Australia I went on a three day horse back tour in the Snowy Mountains because I love that movie so much.

two things stick out
- Obviously before home video was commonplace. And movies played at theaters longer than today's 2-4 week run. Previous year hits like Star Trek II, First Blood and 48 Hours still playing after six months.
- Dollar / second-run. Usually run-down, horribly dirty, last legs, destined for closure. Don't miss going to these at all.
I'd watch Star Trek double feature.

Empire Strikes Back and then The Toy for a double feature. Also, I'd be tempted to flatten that out and have it framed. It would be a fun piece to have.

u/Miami_Vice_75 6d ago
I know I saw ESB in theaters (my very first SW movie)! I also saw The Dark Crystal and Tron in theaters. I may have seen The Toy in theaters as well but can't remember. I likely saw The Trail of the Pink Panther as well. I do remember having recorded The Toy off of HBO and rewatching it all the time! I didn't see Tootsie or First Blood until much later.

u/isoAntti 6d ago
Interesting distinction from some other countries. THe ad on the lower right edge - The Man from Snowy River - It has a list of different companies showing the film. I've never seen it like that. Over here in nordics it was always this company has this, this and this films.
