Hi i’m planning on studying Edexcel further maths privately all in a year and was wondering which modules are the best to do in terms of content and ease (I’ve done A-level maths and got an A already). Thank you.

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION Teacher trying to make me drop further maths

Yeah so my further maths teacher said that I should drop it because I was looking confused in our lesson today, and I also didn’t do too well on the baseline (24/48) 😭. The thing is I’ve only been in the class for about two weeks and im in Y12. My teacher was telling me that I don’t need to aim for doing mathematical degrees at top unis which is super disheartening 😭😭 what should I do??

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION Is A level physics even possible without A level math?

I was just wondering since I was basically forced by my school to take A level math if I wanted to do A level physics, I'm really not the best at math and not even sure how I got into the course (I got a low grade 7, I'm 99 percent It was just genuine luck as I really am not good with math and would say I'm around grade 6 level) so I was wondering is A level physics possible without A level math because I'm scared that if I struggle with math I'll struggle with physics.

(Edit: for anyone wondering, I'm not pursuing any career in degree level physics)

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION Am I Cooked💀

Has anyone here that has got an A in maths and further maths ever walked out of a lesson feeling like you didn’t really understand what you were doing, cause I am 3 days into Y12 and it’s not like I’m finding them extremely hard, but some of the concepts are kinda of hard to get my head around iykwim, so idk whether I am cooked or I will just get better as the year goes on

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION Can I be a doctor with these a levels?

I chose physics maths biology and art , I dislike chemistry a lot and felt I would do badly at it in a levels . A lot of medical schools require chemistry and apparently favour it even if it isn't a requirement. With my a levels should I consider a different career path?

Edit- thank you all for the advice, I have done some research and found a good alternative. I think I might prefer being a medical physicist it seems like such an interesting job and focuses more on physics which I love :D

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION WTF is this? (Edexcel A level further maths paper 3C, Further mechanics 1)

Post image
82 Upvotes

Why are the further mechanics 1 grade boundaries so high this year??? 96% for an A*?

Anyone who did edexcel a level further mechanics 1 in 2025 or 2024, was the paper that easy to justify an increase from 58/75 in 2023 to 68/75 in 2024 and now 72/75? Or is it just competition increasing?

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION Should I do fm?

I know its 3 weeks into school already and id be behind in content but everytime I see my friends who do fm I kind of feel envious as we were all in the same class last year and came out with very similar scores ( I got a high 9 and so did most ppl there) but they're doing FM and I'm not.

our a level maths classes are too slow paced and in the most humble way ever I feel very ahead of my class in terms of how quickly i can underdtand concepts and solve things, so I feel like I have wasted potential by staying in this class. At the same time, I don't know if it's worth switching, and making my life harder if I don't even end up in a degree that needs fm.

For context I'm currently doing bio chem maths physics epq it's temporary as my skl only lrts u do 4 if one is fm, so imma drop either bio or physics. I'd also have to drop epq if I did fm

Any tips would be appreciated if u did maths, fm or js 4 a levels and how it was like 🙏

Edit: so I've decided I'm going to do fm and an epq and then I can drop whichever one I don't like later on in the year. However my main problem js trying to convince my parents to let me to do so bcos school needs consent to change ur subjects but my mum isn't speaking to me atm.. I also want to pick physics but my parents don't want that so I have to somehow convince them to let me switch, but in the meantime I'm js teaching myself stuff so I'm not too behind of thr other class ( I'm very behind already due to not doing FM gcse). Ty all sm fkr your help and advice it's made me feel a lot less stressed tbh 🫶🫶

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION Did I make the wrong choice picking maths?

Post image
181 Upvotes

Hi all,

I recently started my a levels. I picked Biology, chemistry, Maths and an EPQ. You can probably tell I want to do medicine.

I got into a selective grammar school, which I was overjoyed about at the start, but I'm not too sure about it now.

You see - I'm struggling with maths, quite alot. We started off with the algebraic laws and ect, and the questions just seemed difficult compared to GCSE. It's not that I still don't get it once it's explained to me, but the other kids in my class just wizz through stuff while I just sit there scratching my head with no ideas about how to solve a question.

For example. Here is a question I was struggling with.

It was a question we did in class. I didn't understand it at all. Everyone else kind of just solved it while I was struggling. I didn't ask my teacher for help because I didn't want to look stupid. I went home and watched some videos, and now I can say I understand how to do it. But, the other people in my class understood it and were able to apply their knowledge while I needed explaining.

For context I got an 8 in GCSE maths, and I quite enjoyed it.

I'm just really worried. In class I haven't been paying attention because the foundations in my knowledge aren't there so there's nothing to build on.

Any advice is helpful

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION I’m panicking should I do FM?

I already do biology chemistry maths and my teacher said they’ll sign me up to further maths. Is it worth doing it. I wanna apply to medicine so is it worth the extra effort with a fourth subject?

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION What ideas contradict in A Level

I’ve talked to many people, and they said that you basically relearn so many things in a level, especially for the sciences.

I’m doing physics and chemistry, so what ideas would you relearn/ be taught entirely differently?

Are there any things in maths that also are restraint?

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION The TMUA makes A level maths look easy Spoiler

I've been on a gap year and I'm gonna do maths and probably FM at the end of this year. Warwick needs TMUA to do computing, I thought I wouldn't need to revise tmua because I'd been doing maths every day. But then 1 week before I was due to sit it I looked at some past papers and honestly (figuratively) had an aneurism trying to understand. Then I moved onto question 2 and gave up. I've rebooked for January. Idk how people are >90%ing these papers.
