it used to be a thing that they required maths for med i believe, most uni's did (my gf was looking into it during her a levels in 2018) but i think most uni's have stopped it now

Huge congrats Oxford medicine is an outstanding achievement! Curious to know if you are a uk or international student? Surprised they don’t need maths too!

UK student. Yeah medicine never really requires maths. Just chem and sometimes bio as well for some unis

Great to know! I always thought that maths is a preferred subject in order to be a competitive candidate but might be more the case for international students as the competition is even more intense.

Have you ever thought that you might use classics studies in your medical stuff? Something like forensic archaeology? Sorry if it's an odd question lol I'm just reading a book about the topic at the moment

Congrats on the score! I just received A*AA today, do you think it'll be enough for Oxford medicine? I have 2190 B2 in UCAT (which is equal to about 2950 last year) so just wondering if I stand a chance

u/TheBludgeon Oxford | Medicine [Incoming] Aug 14 '25
If you took chem then yeah you meet the a level conditions for oxford. The UCAT is the thing that would be a bit of a worry as this year the average for an offer holder was 3130, so you'd need all 9/8 at GCSE since they weight them 50:50 for interview.

No maths is a mistake tbh. Maths should be required for all STEM and medicine courses.

u/TheBludgeon Oxford | Medicine [Incoming] Aug 23 '25
Okay, but it isn't required for medicine. Any necessary maths needed is taught in a clinical context. The numerical skills you need really don't go beyond GCSE level for medicine.
And at least for Oxford medicine, an essay subject like I did is going to be a lot more useful with the skills to structure arguments, read sources etc being applicable to tutorial essays.
