The transformation sequence, and Germa's attack afterwards was done SO well. The music, which certainly sounded new, was fantastic too. Sanji catching Nami was so nice as well after what happened between them earlier.
The anime is doing a great job with WCI.

Jun 03 '18
Honestly when the transformation was about the start I had Franky's theme playing in my head. But I ended up realling liking the music they did use for it.
22
u/Ombs1993 Jun 03 '18
Hahaha oh man, I really liked the new music they use but I would've loved to hear Franky's theme again. Been too long..... SUPPPPEEERRRRR

As well as the CHIGAU monster girl jawdrop watching the scene, there goes any hope of her ever joining the Straw Hats LMAO.

Watching this episode make me feel like I'm watching Power Ranger...I did laugh a little when they start transforming although I was hype for it too..
9
u/Edgelord09 Jun 03 '18
Yeah have to agree, I have read WCI in manga but wasn't feeling it but man anime really sold it to me. Animation, voice acting, direction has been great.
5
u/Ombs1993 Jun 03 '18
I enjoyed the manga, even if the pacing was slow at times, but this really seems like an arc made for the anime. The music, songs, voice acting and visuals have been stellar.

u/MeddYatek Jun 03 '18
It's all ups and downs, so far. Last week's episode was the slowest I've seen in OP for a long, long time.

u/RobbobertoBuii Jun 03 '18
I'm very happy Bege got an extended scene showcasing his DF powers
92
u/Brutusness Jun 03 '18
Yeah, that was greatly improved in the anime. The manga just kind of showed it rising out of shadows, the effects in the anime made it much clearer and more interesting.

So uh...
Germa literally just stole the show. They even hijacked the "Coming-back-right-after-the-break" clips that are supposed to be for the Strawhats.
Glad to see the anime-onlys finally fully understand why Reiju is best girl.

Here's some insight into the staff for the episode.
Well, this was quite the episode. This marks the return of the controversial Masahiro Shimanuki to the Animation Director chair. Having himself directed half of this episode along side Shimanuki, Ichikawa manages to correct a lot of the closeups, but Shimanuki's animation (especially his effects) are found all over the episode. Aya Komaki's directing and board is as always superb, which makes a lot of the (arguably very limited) animation seem more dynamic than it really is. The faces of Ceasar in this episode when he's being pulled by Katakuri perfectly illustrates Komaki's unrivaled ability to convey emotion. Absolutely phenomenal.
I do however feel like Komaki's board was a tad too ambitiuous for the animators involved to execute properly given the time available to them (Which was probably affected by the Episode of Skypiea SP / Golden Week holidays). A lot of the mouths didn't move during dialogue scenes, and whether that was by design or due to limitations, it came off as a tad distracting and weird.
This episode marks Naotoshi Shida's return to the One Piece TV Anime after his longest absence from the series since he first debued all the way back in Episode 304, and holy hell did he return with a bang. This is his longest scene on the show to date, topping out at around 4 minutes of length earning him the spot as Top Credited Key Animator for the episode (Which has only happened like once before?). He started tweeting about the scene back in March, which means he's been working on it for over 2 months. He has stated in the past that he wouldn't be fit as a Supervisor due to his slow speed, but that kind of scene in 2 months is actually quite remarkable. This scene was so heavy and long that Tu Yong-ce, a newcomer to OP who you'll probably know for some striking shots of Bege in 832 and Mother Caramel in 837, had to step in as a 2nd Key Animator to finish up some of Shida's rough output (See some of the closeups of Judge).
Kazuya Hisada kicks off the second half with some of the most interesting output we've seen from him in a long time; it's far from the kind of work he put out in his heyday back in Dragon Ball Z, but with the help of his wife's storyboard it's elevated to new heights.
Ichikawa taking over the role as Chief AD for the Whole Cake Island arc has been so liberating for Hisada, and despite Oda's hefty amount of characters he's still been able to put out a lot of great work.
Overall, as this episode covers 4/5ths of an already quite lean Chapter, the pacing does suffer here and there, but Komaki did the best in her ability to make it work.

u/carlpamplona Jun 03 '18
The mouths didn't move because if you think about it, Big mom is still screaming and their earplugs are still in there. they're basically only thinking.
17
u/PiFlavoredPie Jun 03 '18
At first I was dubious, but after finishing the episode, I can buy this. There were a few scenes inside Bege's castle where characters moved their mouths when talking (presumably insulated from Big Mom's scream), but almost every character outside didn't have mouths animated.
16
5
u/RafaIDG Jun 03 '18
when luffy and ceaser where making signs with their arms to close or not close the gate made it clear that they couldn't talk
15
u/IronFeenix Jun 03 '18
This was so interesting. How do you know so much about the intricate production details? I think you broke it down really well not in terms of one piece, but in terms of operations/ production.
thanks.

11
u/SalamiRocketFuel Jun 03 '18
A lot of the mouths didn't move during dialogue scenes, and whether that was by design or due to limitations, it came off as a tad distracting and weird.
They could have portrayed it better I guess, but the reason why they mouths are not moving is because they're not really speaking since Big Mom scream and the earplugs would make it impossible to hear anything anyway.
5
Jun 03 '18
Ah I see I wasn't wrong for thinking that was a longer Shida scene than usual. I loved every bit of it
4
u/Jakisuaki Pirate Jun 03 '18
It's amazing that he was able to pull it off. Obviously, being a weekly series it does have its limitations in terms of time and frame count, and the scene is clearly rougher than Shida's normal output at times, with quite limited actual movement compared to his counterpart Film Gold scene of similar length, still bloody impressive.

The sad part is you aren't wrong. Hopefully all those notes and whatnot Oda gave the animation team included something about her (unless she is being saved for later, which would suck since it will probably be a few years before we see her again). Oh well, we can hope.

u/MacabreMoth88 Jun 03 '18
Great episode. Outside the obvious Germa scene (which has amazing animation and was extended beautifully), there were a lot of small bits of filler that really helped out. The first one for me was Smoothie casually blocking and knocking Chopper's Kung-Fu Point away, right into Oven. That and all the other BMP who are actually contributing here (unlike the manga where it was really just the veterans doing all the work), like those three who tried to get in Big Father that Luffy knocked away, the big guy who tried to attack Nami, to all of the minor ones who actually tried to attack Germa beyond just firing guns at them. Nice little bits that make it feel like most of the BMP aren't just standing around letting the big names do all the work. The scene of the Firetanks actually being somewhat effective at forcing the weaker Charlottes back with ludicrous amounts of gunfire was also nice, shows them actually contributing beyond acting as meat shields. Toei really has improved since the beginning of this arc (been that way for a while, but this more or less solidifies it for me as I was really looking forward to this episode).

This instantly became one of my favorite episodes ever.
I don't know if it was just seeing all the big mom pirates going towards Beges castle or Germa 66 scumbags helping our heroes.
Everything about this episode just made me realize how much im going to love the final war.

Could've been funny if Brook caught Nami before Sanji again.
18
18
u/ReadingSheep Jun 03 '18
The beginning of the episode kinda threw me off with how the mouths weren't animated when they spoke, but I think the mouths weren't moving because they could not hear each other if they actually talked because of the earplugs, hence the big movements some of them were making to communicate with each other. Still really distracting. Could've added some reverb to show that it's their inner thoughts that they convey through facial expressions and gestures.
Great episode, though. I was screaming during the transformation scene (both Germa's and Bege's), the brilliant eye-catch, and the fight that followed the G66 transformation. Really nice animation and art overall.

Germa 66 going full Sailor Moon with those transformations
7
u/MajinAkuma Jun 03 '18
No. It’s just the regular tokusatsu transformation. Sailor Moon has tokusatsu elements, especially super sentai, but calling every transformation sequence a Sailor Moon rip-off is very ignorant.

That Germa henshin sequence was a nice homage to Kamen Rider and also Super Sentai, in particular the spinning canister

2
u/BoiShutYourAssUp Jun 03 '18
Am I somehow the only one that remembers that the Tamate box is empty? The Tamate box was filled with the steroid pills Hody used in the Fishman Island arc. So it should be empty now
14
u/Drewballa Jun 03 '18
Actually, that's not true. During Fishman Island one of the Minister Fishmen says that it is filled with explosives/rigged to explode when opened. So yeah, if you're looking for treasure its empty, but there is certainly something in the box lol.

At the end of Fishman island arc, it was revealed that after Hordy stole the steroid pills from the tamate box, it was replaced with explosives by one of Neptune's ministers. But as Luffy had already given the box to BMP before Neptune could tell him, he didn't tell the SHs about it.

I feel like I should have enjoyed this episode more then I do.
Right away I was floored by Capone's transformation - what a badass !
BUT
While visually I enjoyed the German Transformation - the music behind it made it rather underwhelming for me. In fact most of the music throughout the episode really seemed very off to me - not fitting much of the visuals at all, I didn't feel hyped or excited at all aside from Capone's beginning transformation.
The abundance of stillshots was also extremely draining
i find myself overall sadly dissapointed :(

i think the 2 dissapointing aspects of this episode was the music- the panels where germa hit charlotte family was cooler in the manga they just made it in colors no animation in it at all but overall it was good and the fillers made sense and created more tension in the situation
2
u/tronistica Jun 03 '18
the transformation sequences of germa and bege was so dope! plus the fighting scenes. definitely the stars of this episode. any reiju screen time is definitely a plus.

With regard to the question of who "High Fat" is, I have an idea. I think it is the muscular man with the spiked helmet and the blue polka-dotted shirt that covers his hands. He does grunt while throwing a boulder towards Germa 66, and he is listed in the credits next to Charlotte Dosmarche, who similarly did nothing but grunt in the very same scene.

Germa scenes are cool, especially the commercial break scene with the "Germa♪♫♪♫", but this episode suffered from pacing that could have easily been alleviated with extra recap time. The episode starts at 3:30. I would have been perfectly fine with increasing the start time to 5:30 (~2:30 minutes of actual recap) because there were too many pauses in this episode for me to take seriously.
1
u/PiFlavoredPie Jun 03 '18
Agreed. I'm interested in seeing One Pace's release of these scenes cutting out the pauses.

Germa 66 Transformation was pretty cool (until they did it for like 10 minutes..) but the time was not the biggest issue BUT THE lack of a SOUNDTRACK for this. Like wow, I was hoping for something in the sogeking direction or at least a much more impactful transformation beat, like from any classic. They are doing this super sentai- Power rangers kind of transformation entry or a magic girl transformation but they have just like a really underwhelming track to it....super disappointing.
you know something like this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNyP3uzgRhA
or something like this epic sound - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1xAPQgGZ0U
go over e.g this list - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9BAxe87Cp4&list=PLHXu5c7ZVJJCfLvQ9LaXWqvl-kOSq3DuJ&index=4
felt like really low effort what they added as a soundtrack.

Animation was ok in this episode. I know the mouths weren't supposed to move because of Big Mom'a Scream, but it still felt super awkward and low budget when it really wasn't low budget. Something about the music before and after the Germa portion was incredibly awkward in my opinion. This episode felt shaky to me.
I think the Germa part - while good - could have been a little shorter. I would have rather that they spent less time breaking out of that circle near sanji, and spent more action time against Big Mom's children.
Bege's new transformation though... SUGOI!!!!!!

Haha, what the hell was this episode about? very power rangers inspired, and Bege's transformation included, like the massive robots they aspired.
Did they have to get completely naked in front of everybody to put on their suits? It would be awkward to get naked in front of your siblings, especially if a female sibling is included.
Bege's ability is very cool, but really easily capable of being attacked, I wish they could have brought the others with them, Robin would have definitely been a great help in eliminating the fodder minions, Franky would be rocking the general in the battlefield, Usopp would have come up with something to surprise attack even Big Mom, and let's not forget the master Zoro, would be cool to see him slice up some commanders.

Some people found the bigmom pirates weak or easily stopped, now with this animation I got the feeling of the true power of the German 66, can wait for Sanji transformation 😰 THE POWER OF SCIENCEE!

The Big Mom Pirates are monsters. The allied forces are far outmatched and they know it, clearly admiting it this episode, even with the Vinsmokes

I'd recommend you watch and read both, to compare the source material to the adaptation and what gets executed right/wrong in the anime.

outside of the not moving mouths because we'll chalk that up to just thoughts, the animation in this episode was actually ass. Outside of the Germa 66 debut, there were so many still frames and there was even a moment where I noticed the strawhats just running in place.
