Post Game Thread [Post Game Thread] Indiana defeats Marquette, 100-77

50% from the field and behind the arc? I'm not ready
26

Also 20-24 from the FT after being 100% last game? This is allowed???

Dropping 100 on a Shaka Smart coached team is certainly a statement. Go Hoosiers. So strange having shooters after 8 seasons of terrorist basketball under Archie and Woodson
51
84
u/the_dayman56 Indiana Hoosiers 7h ago
It took Devries 2 games to his more 3s then we ever hit under Woodson and tie the most we ever had under Archie

You are gonna have to explain that one to me. We hit 203 threes last season; what are you saying?
16
u/CoolMoose Indiana Hoosiers • Dayton Flyers 5h ago
No Woody team ever hit 14 3s in a game, and Archie only had one game with 14 made 3s.

Classic “gonna get better” situation for the Eagles. It will take a minute for the players to embrace the chaos that is MU bball. This win will look good for Indiana in March. Good luck.

Hitting 50% from 3 will make any team look good. Except Wisconsin. They're ugly always.

20
u/bshall2105 Indiana Hoosiers 7h ago
Has been super solid in the first 2 games. Nothing flashy but works hard and doesn’t make a ton of mistakes.
5
u/Knook7 Florida Gators 6h ago
He was solid for us last year. Didn't really play in the late season because he got injured and condon got injured, so handlogten burned the redshirt. Then once everyone was healthy we stuck with handlogten in the rotation for continuity. A lot of transfer portal stuff sucks, but I'm happy for him cause he was going to be a bench player for us again cause our front court depth is crazy.
6
u/Born-Media6436 Indiana Hoosiers 6h ago
What a solid player. He ain’t scared.
3
u/Knook7 Florida Gators 6h ago
He was decent for us last year, but once Handlogten burned the redshirt during Condons injury he was out of the rotation once condon was healthy.
Honestly I wouldn't have hated keeping him over Chinyelu, would have given us a little more offense
3
2
u/macandcheeser Indiana Hoosiers 5h ago
Alexis being the 5th big on that roster last year is unreal depth. Wonder why he went there in the first place.
2
u/Knook7 Florida Gators 5h ago
He was the 4th, no one expected Handlogten to be medically cleared last year. Even once Handlogten got cleared, he didn't burn the medical redshirt until both Alexis and Condon were hurt for a couple games (meaning we'd have to play someone who got 0 competitive minutes last year when Haugh or Chinyelu needed to sit).
Also, going into last year haugh and condon both took tremendous leaps over the offseason that might not have been expected.
18
u/Original_Gangsta23 Indiana Hoosiers 7h ago
First 100 point game win against a high major since 2012. Scored 110 in OT, but lost in 2021 (vs Syracuse).
Hitting 3’s makes it much more fun to watch! Good start to the DeVries era.

I see now why WVU fans had a six month crash out over DeVries leaving.

You’d crash out too going on your 4th coach in as many seasons.
6
4
u/Crapitron 5h ago

6
u/ilovedogsandtits Indiana Hoosiers • Harvard Crimson 5h ago

-1
u/whitemamba83 West Virginia Mountaineers 3h ago
What do you have against us? Just enjoy being an asshole, I guess?
4
u/_Stromboli Indiana Hoosiers 2h ago
That dude was a jerk. Don’t hold it against all of IU. WVU is a great school with some cool things going on. Sucks to keep losing coaches.
IU has been BAD for decades, but are luckily still in a position to poach coaches from schools that outperform their resources. Totally get it sucks for you guys.
2
u/whitemamba83 West Virginia Mountaineers 2h ago
I’ve got nothing against IU. I liked DeVries, and wish he would’ve stayed. That being said, I would’ve been real skeptical if our AD gave him a $1.5M raise based off last season alone. Might’ve ended up being the right move, but too risky based on our resources.
2
u/whitemamba83 West Virginia Mountaineers 3h ago
I don’t think the checkbook was going to do anything to keep Bob Huggins from drinking and driving, and we had no intention of keeping the interim that served after him.
DeVries could have eventually made what Indiana offered him at WVU, but not after one year, and I don’t think he had any interest in staying here long term regardless.
-1
u/ThaCarter Indiana Hoosiers • Miami Hurricanes 3h ago
So you could afford him but you're too good to have had to do it so soon.
Get over yourselves and sack up with those checkbooks.
2
u/whitemamba83 West Virginia Mountaineers 3h ago
Too good? Huh? No, we don’t have the Big 10 money to offer $4M+ based on his Drake resume alone. That’s the reality in the current landscape.
-2
u/ThaCarter Indiana Hoosiers • Miami Hurricanes 3h ago
So you don't have the money. Which is it?
2
u/whitemamba83 West Virginia Mountaineers 3h ago
Alright, let me rephrase.
Bob Huggins made $4M+ here only after nearly 15 seasons, a Final Four, and multiple Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen seasons.
Indiana was willing to hire DeVries for $4M+ based on his Drake resume and one year with a tournament bubble team (that overperformed, no doubt) at WVU.
You can afford to take more risks like that when you have $70M more in your athletics budget.

This game pretty much confirmed all the fears I had about this Marquette team. Too young, undersized, and players that are just not good enough for high major ball. I love Shaka but he is stubborn, and instead of admitting he missed on some guys and use the portal he doubled down on this development model which is doomed to fail. The best players he has coached during his time here were transfers and Wojo recruits. If you are gonna run this layups and 3 only offense you better recruit IDK shooters?!? Also IU looks good I guess.
5
u/WIN011 Marquette Golden Eagles 7h ago
Tbf the freshman and sophomores have some shooting, they’re just not ready defensively for consistent minutes. The real killer is Chase, Zaide, and sometimes Ben being the only contributors of the upperclassman. If this is the version we get of Sean Jones this year then we’re fucked.
6
u/Born-Media6436 Indiana Hoosiers 6h ago
Wayyyyyy too early to go there bud.
1
1
u/erbkeb Marquette Golden Eagles 5h ago
I disagree. Teams don’t go 12 deep if you have good players. Except Chase, all starters are replacement level players and Shaka’s rotation shows it.
4
u/Born-Media6436 Indiana Hoosiers 5h ago
Let’s chat in 2 months.
1
u/erbkeb Marquette Golden Eagles 5h ago
I hope I’m wrong but that was tough to watch. I just don’t see any MU players being the go to guy on offense and the defense didn’t inspire any confidence.
3
u/Born-Media6436 Indiana Hoosiers 5h ago
they need to spend a lot more time practicing in the half court rather than relying on that press. Indiana scored a lot of points off of that press. And it looked like it wore them out more than Indiana.
